Sweden's weather agency SMHI has issued a class one warning for a snow storm set to wallop most of Sweden on Wednesday.

The winter weather will move in from the west, encompassing the vast majority of the country. Only the southern quarter of Sweden is predicted to escape its grasp.

While the storm moved in over Sweden's west coast already on Tuesday night, it is expected to spend most of Wednesday and parts of Thursday moving across the country.

Stockholmers and Gothenburgers can count on sub-zero temperatures and a great deal of snow. SMHI issued a class one warning, the lowest warning on their scale, from Värmland County and the north shores of Mälardalen all the way to the Härjedalsfjällen hills.

Svealand and southern Norrland can expect between five and 15 centimetres of fresh snow.

"When it's spring time you've got to count on a few wintry relapses," meteorologist Sandra Andersson told the TT news agency. "But as far as we can tell, in ten days' time it will be quite calm and rather undramatic again."

Residents in the far north, however, appear to be frozen in the depths of winter still. On Tuesday night, Lappland's Nikkaluokta recorded -34C.
