Democrats Abroad US Election Party

It only happens once every four years, and this US election has been one for the ages. And on Tuesday, November 4th the Swedish chapter of Democrats Abroad is throwing a party for the ages to celebrate the end of the seemingly endless campaigns of Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.

The all-night affair kicks off with dinner (for an extra charge), and includes a mix of music and panel discussions. Election results will be shown on big screen televisions until the wee hours of Wednesday morning, when maybe, just maybe, it will be clear who the 44th US president will be.

All political stripes are welcome, and you need not be a political junkie to have fun with entertainment like Cyndee Peters, Jessica Folcker, and Adam Baptiste taking to the stage as well.

Price: 370 kronor (includes dinner), 150 kronor (drinks only)
Location: Hotel Scandic Anglais, Humlegårdsgatan 23
Time: Tuesday, November 4th, 9.00pm

Mahala Raï Banda originate from the slums that surround the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Their Balkan mixis a blend of the new and the old, original and traditional. Loud trumpets and frenetic strings push the party to an ecstatic tempo that is sure to erase the inhibitions of even the most self-conscious Söder audience.

DJ's from MultiKulti provide the post-concert entertainment.

Helena Franzén - Tide

Choreographer Helena Franzén's new work which opens at Dansens Hus this Saturday is inspired by the tides. Music, movements, costume, the dancers...everything ebbs and flows like the tide.

Franzén and her composer Jukka Rintamäki are both inspired by the melancholic and they seek to shake things up creating imbalance and insecurity to counter the apparent comfort.

All the music in the performance is played on a gramophone and composed by Rintamäki for each individual dancer and her movements. The dancers themselves act as DJ's and play their own music to accompany their solos.

Price: 200 kronor (100 kronor for those under 26)
Location: Dansen Hus, Barnhusgatan 12-14
Time: Saturday November 1st & Monday November 3rd – Wednesday November 5th, 7pm

The Nortec Collective began as a musical manifestation at the end of the 1990s mixing the local norteñon beats with techno and developed to mix in the new and the old from this frontier town that is constantly in transformation.

Mogwai (UK)

Mogwai are a Scottish rock group that since forming in 1995 have become one of the most influential and best-known names in post-rock.

Melodic bass guitar riffs dominating lengthy instrumental pieces exemplify their music which is short on lyrical content but no lesser for it.

Mogwai (meaning "ghost" in Cantonese) is named after the creatures from the film Gremlins, although guitarist Stuart Braithwaite explains that "it has no significant meaning and we always intended on getting a better one, but like a lot of other things we never got 'round to it."

Mann is known for her fascinating blend of clever, almost literary and humorously dry lyrics set to catchy tunes.

She says of her seventh album entitled ”@#%&* smilers” that she remains inspired by those living a long way from the limelight and success. Those distinctly unlike herself, then.
