Swedish rock band Hammerfall have admitted to smashing up a Vienna hotel room on their European tour.

"We are ashamed," confirmed the Gothenburg band's drummer Anders Johansson according to a report in the newspaper Expressen.

The band were partying at the Hotel Fürstenhof in the Austrian capital Vienna when things got a little out of hand.

Johansson admitted that a large quantity of beer had been drunk when he and guitarist Oscar Dronjak decided to show off some of their taekwondo moves on the hotel's furniture.

Dronjak reportedly injured himself when he tried to headbutt an offending inanimate object in the hotel room.

"His head now looks awful. We are hoping he will be able to cover it up. In Prague (this evening) the show is going to be recorded. He is very ashamed at the moment," Anders Johansson said.

Not satisfied with having destroyed all the contents of the hotel room, the pair also located the hotel's fuse-box and caused an extended power cut, which caused panic in the hotel.

The Hotel Fürstenhof is reported to be unwilling to comment on the incident. The band have confirmed that they have been served with a €1,300 ($1,720) bill for their evening of destruction.

Hammerfall is a heavy metal/power metal band with members originating from Gothenburg, Mora and Mölndal. They were formed in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak.

They have released seven studio albums with the latest offering entitled "No Sacrifice, No Victory" in February 2009.

One of my favourite bands. But i cant condone this behaviour, but if they pay for the damage done and then get smacked on their bottoms with one of their studded belts all should be forgiven.

This is terrible behaviour for a rock band! I'll not be renewing my fanclub membership until there's a public apology!

This is great PR for the hotel! They will earn so much more than what the band will pay in damages :-)

This is terrible behaviour for a rock band. Practising tai kwondo, Christ alive what happened to just "We did cos we can"? What next, "I'm so sorry, it got knocked over while I was doing tiger rising in my tai chi routine"?

Rock'n'roll är död.

Rockers destroy hotel room.

Do we care? (no)

Is it a worthwhile poll topic? (no)

It must be difficult to come up with witty stuff day after day, but really...

How can this even be worth such a hullabaloo? Rock and metal bands have been doing far worse for decades, 1300 Euros is bugger all to get ashamed about!

A metal band smashed up a hotel room.

I remember a time it would have been a story, if they had not trashed the hotel.

I will now go back to worshipping my gods, Lemmy of Motorhead, Ted Nugent and Ozzy.

...I thought it was normal for a band to wreck a hotel room...

...happens all the time...
