Prosecutor: giving the pill to teens aids rape

A Swedish prosecutor thinks that health professionals who prescribe birth control pills to girls younger than 15-years-old should be charged as accomplices to rape.

“I’m read the law. Those how facilitate a crime are accomplices and whoever hands out birth control to someone who is underage makes it easier for assailants to continue attacking,” said deputy public prosecutor Mikael Hammarstrand to the medical trade newspaper Dagens Medicin.

Hammarstrand refers to the sex crimes law of 2005 which states that sex with someone younger than 15-years-old is always consider an unlawful act of coercion even if the sex is consensual.

A lack of legal clarity on the issue has resulted in a few midwives refusing to write birth control pill prescriptions for girls younger than 15-years-old.

But Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) disagrees with the prosecutor’s views.

“Our opinion is that those who issue prescriptions like this are doing nothing wrong,” said the agency’s Thomas Tegenfeldt to the TT news agency.

Protecting young girls who are already sexually active against unwanted pregnancies should take precedence over other aspects of the law, the health board claims.

“Since the law is formulated like this, we’ll take a look ourselves at the question of the law’s intent and if it really should be understood in this way,” said Tegenfeldt.

The health board has a previously scheduled meeting with the prosecutor’s office and Tegenfeldt says the agency plans to take up the issue then.

Lena Marions, the head physician at the women’s clinic of Karolinska University Hospital in Solna finds Hammarstrand’s interpretation of the law unfortunate.

“It’s sort of sad,” she told TT.

“The reason we prescribe birth control pills is to help people avoid unwanted pregnancies. When they come to us they’ve already had sex and they will continue to have sex even if we don’t write out a prescription.”

Why should a girl of 15 and below take contraceptives? Are they done playing hide and seek in the sand? The genesis of societies' problem starts when a girl of 15 or less craves for sex as if it is a daily vitamin that must be taken. How can a child raise another child? What does she know about childcare or upbringing?

I know a lot of people within the said age bracket will be pissed with my comment, I dont give a damn about your response.

A bit sloppy there, isn't it?

Actually, some girls have very painful periods, and apparently the Pill often makes them more bearable... I agree that 15 is a bit young for having sex, but I hardly think that prosecuting healthcare professionals will solve the problems you're describing here.

Indeed, there are other uses for the pill. They help regulate hormones and that's why they work so well for treating acne.

The legal age of consent in the US is generally eighteen, depending on the state. I was prescribed the pill when I was sixteen. However, I wasn't sexually active then. It was to help regulate my periods.

Even after I'd been taking the pill for a while, I never thought, "Well, I'm on the pill now so I guess it's okay for me to go out and shag every guy I meet." Being put on the pill didn't turn me into a slut overnight. It took years for that to happen.

It never cases to amaze me how the most idiotic and blinkered people, rise to the level of there stupidity.

How does idiots like this keep getting into positions of responsibility?

This guy neds a lesson in medicine and to actually have a conversation with a woman about any subject, outside of demanding sex.

A lot of medics prescribe teenage girls the pill, to regulate hormone levels.

It sounds like this guy is imposing his own sexual immorality on young girls and blaming them, for his own issues.

In plain language he needs to get out more, socialise, find a girlfriend, make friends and get a life.

What we REALLY need is to develop a pill which keeps young girls from hitting puberty until they turn 15. That will keep them from having all those terrible sexual thoughts and feelings. I bet I could make millions off of contented parents and miserable, developmentally f*****d up young ladies!
