Rosengård firefighters call it quits

Published: 28 Apr 09 15:31 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/19130/20090428/

After months of suffering through thrown rocks and threats directed at his squadron during numerous calls to the Rosengård neighbourhood in Malmö, local fire chief Henrik Persson said on Tuesday he is stepping down from his post.

“I’m not getting any support from our top management. They don’t listen to our requests for a secure working environment,” Persson told the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

Persson, who also sits in on the board of Sweden’s national firefighters’ union, said he will abandon his leadership role at the Jägersro fire station and instead continue work as a rank-and-file firefighter.

Three other firefighters, including another squadron leader from the Jägersro fire station, also said on Tuesday they were quitting in hopes of relocating to other stations, the Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper reports.

Firefighters and police officers have long been subject to thrown rocks and threats on calls to the predominantly immigrant neighbourhood, with fire fighters working to introduce measures to make their jobs safer.

But their efforts have been for naught, according to Persson, who feels that he can no longer guarantee the safety of his colleagues.

“At a recent meeting a police officer said we need to be ready to have Molotov cocktails thrown at us,” he said.

Persson is also upset that the local emergency services authority won’t authorize funds to pay for two additional firefighters to be based at the station, which currently has seven firefighters.

On Monday night, yet another small fire broke out in a rubbish collection area located in the Rosengård neighbourhood.

This article is missing something. Why are people harassing the firefighters?
18:07 April 28, 2009 by antoniolgj
I’m quite amazed that this time the word “immigrants” made to the news when talking about riots and crimes in Sweden. What has happened with the mysterious “youths”?

Anyway... when will the Swedish government wake up and see what uncontrolled mass immigration is doing to such a nice country? Very well Mrs Persson it’s just about time someone stand up against politically correctness and shout what in going on. You and your brave men have my respect.

What a shame. Firefighters are only there to put out fires? I do not understand why these "immigrants" are so opposed to someone saving people from burning buildings. Out of curiosity is the article talking about German, Dutch, or American immigrants? For some reason I have a feeling I already know the answer to this question.

Abackstrom, I am sure they are harassing firefighters because of Western wealth and prosperity, or American "imperialism", or the lack of social services. Isn't this what all the Western European newspapers say the problem is?
19:52 April 28, 2009 by Soft Boiled
The goverment really needs to take decisive action - The law of the land applies to everyone - Swedens tread softly policy is laughable! Anyone found attacking any member of the emergency services should have a hefty prison sentence - regardless of age, sex or race. Sweden should pride itself as a country with equality for all, now that doesn´t sound too hard now does it?
19:57 April 28, 2009 by Braderunner Rennuredarb
Almost suprised that it has taken this long. Its sad that the police wont protect the firefighters or work to establish the rule of law.

When looking at it in a situation similar to weeds - if you stay on top of it, you can pluck out the individual weeds and there is no problem. In this case, the garden is way overgrown...so you have to pluck out a lot...or till it under and begin again.

it is fault of swedish immigration policy. they allowed many immigrants as refugees from many war torn countries especially from muslim countries. where as in usa many immigrants from china and other countries are educated. these so called refugees are criminals and barbarians. now many people are getting swedish citizenship by fake marriges. sweden should follow britans immigration policy to prevent further damage. giving citizenship only to the people who pay good amounts of tax is the only solution.
20:46 April 28, 2009 by Roger O. Thornhill
But what about the goals of multi-culturalism? Seeden, in the eyes of its leaders believe that Swedes or being Swedish is an inferior culture without the other cultures to add value.

Multi-culturalism isn't about integration but the separate existence of other populations within another host culture, which of course is not a superior culture, but one to be improved by the other culture.

Don't you all feed improved?

Hi again Eurostan

I'm Muslim and educated in Sweden! Most of my classmates coming from Iran and Pakistan are also educated and Muslim. You should understand that rape, terror and bothering police, fire fighters,...is forbidden in Islam. Why some Muslims do? Because they are criminal. I'm sorry to see that Swedish police is not tough enough to arrest all of these criminals and expel them to where they came from!

Asn for those who worry about mass immigration, US is developed due to this mass immigration but of course they react very harsh if these immigrants or anyone else breal the laws. We don't see sucha thing in Sweden
21:42 April 28, 2009 by antoniolgj
"I'm sorry to see that Swedish police is not tough enough to arrest all of these criminals"

They can dear Iranian, if they do so people like you will be calling them "racist" and the PC gestapo will be doing all they can to sack them. Where do you think you live? this Europe mate, minorities are today "super people". You guys can do whatever you want and nothing will happen, including lose the dole...
22:14 April 28, 2009 by Yendor
The firefighters should stay out of those areas until the police take direct action against those criminal thugs who are attacking the firemen. Or just let the area burn down to the ground and then there will be no need to go to those areas to put-out any more fires.
22:52 April 28, 2009 by wxman
Well, well! Here we find ourselves again addressing the same problem. Yesterday we read that Sweden has a very high rape rate; now today we learn that firefighters are attacked when they make calls to certain neighborhoods. Hmmmmmm, I wonder if there could be possibly be a common factor? (Sarcasm off)
23:09 April 28, 2009 by 7
what problem would that be? att folk som inte har två öre av förstålse om sverige skriver som de kan allting om det som händer i modersvea?

The US was pioneered with people from EUROPE, developed and grew on mass immigration from EUROPE, which all fitted in with the existing culture. Mass immigration from Europe did not clash with the existing culture and work ethic in any way. These were the same kith and kin of the founding fathers of the US. These people who entered the US were really needed but the immigrants into Europe are not really needed and are openly hostile to their European hosts and culture and will never fit in to a way of life that they do not understand and refuse to try and understand.

swedes amaze me..

highly educated south americans with proven swedish ancestry and fulfilling all the financial requirements do not even get tourist visas.

yet criminals from the middle east get asylum very easily.

violent rapists/ kidnappers / drug smugglers from colombia´s FARC , not only get asylum they have their headquarters in stockholm.

Sweden needs to realize that something is not working.
09:15 April 29, 2009 by BlackfDes
Hej!

Has anyone bothered to investigate what the underlying causes of the problems are?

Could it be a lack of services specifically to help immigrants integrate; a lack of employment opportunities or at least equal access to jobs (NOT Sweden jobs for Swedes!); a lack of counselling services for those coming from conflict zones (ie post traumatic stress disorder!); sporting facilities; etc etc?

Could the firefighters have gone into the areas themselves and tried to engage with the youths causing some of the problems?

Sweden has a good and open immigration policy but it must prevent the establishment of immigrant ghettos or the incidence of violence will on increase and spread.

For some reason...all the bad things that happen in Sweden is immediately blamed on immigrants with special emphasis on muslims!!

first of all rape issue...

the following is a from todays news in the local.se

"In addition to challenging victim and crime stereotypes, perceptions surrounding ‘typical’ perpetrators must also be considered. The UN Special Report discusses how there is a widespread belief that the type of men who commit intimate-partner violence are not typical, ‘normal’ Swedes. They are usually imagined as somewhat ‘deviant’ - unemployed, uneducated, alcoholic or from non-Western backgrounds, and so on. However, as Ertürk challenges: “In absolute numbers, the vast majority of the perpetrators of intimate-partner violence are ‘ordinary’ Swedish men.”
09:39 April 29, 2009 by anila
lets talk abt the comment calling immigrants as barbarians..and uneduated!!

just because they (because i am not a war refugee) coming from a war afflicted country doesnt make them barbarian!!..they r here bcoz the so called christian nations attack their country in the pretext of protecting them from "terrorists" or internatnal conflicts.the amount barbarian behaviour that the military from other countries do their countries is too much!!

coming to "unducated

they r educated in their countries.and also held high positions.but when they come here, they have to prove themselves all over again. and when they do that, their black hair/skin and their non-swedish names get on the way of getting them the job that they deserve.
09:39 April 29, 2009 by anila
i have been in sweden only for an year..but i have seen enough!

if ever i have to leave my country to go elsewhere as a war refugee...sweden will be that last place that i would be interested..i believe that it is better to die in your country with what ever little self-respect that is left...than to live here like dogs and second citizens!!
10:28 April 29, 2009 by Jakub72
I think the point is being missed, it not matters who is responsible for the criminal behavior, rather how it is being handled. There where issues in the Chicago Housing Projects with ambulances being shot at when answering calls. The resolution there was to police escort the ambulances, shoot back and charge anyone caught shooting at emergency response vehicle with stiffer penalties. There was more to it then that, but that was the end result.

The housing projects in Chicago, and other major US cities, have had parallel issues that are faced here in Sweden and through out Europe. The solutions requires proactive actions, something that I am finding is either lacking or takes a tremndous amount of time, along socio-economic policies. Chicago's answer to the crime ridden Cabrini Green and other Housing Projects was to tear down the high rises and build communal single family resdences, intergrate the population amongst other communities via sunsidized housing, and bring in new business with tax breaks and other incentives. Not perfect, but not doing anything is worse. There are areas of American life that European countries could benefit from and improve on, because when it comes to racial intergartion the US has the market cornered on things not to try. Maybe the failed policies of yesterday need a closer look?
10:37 April 29, 2009 by Kaethar
O really? Source? I'd say that nothing is ever blamed on immigrants. Rosengård riots were blamed on "society" and not the islamists and AFA who were in fact the ones throwing the rocks. It's a social problem to some extent but I think Sweden does pretty well in never giving individuals (especially immigrants and muslims) responsibility for their actions.

Reread that and realise it is not at all relevant to this discussion.

You're ranting about one comment on a message board?

You mean some are educated and some held high positions. And yes, this is to be expected when someone migrates to a new country. No such thing as a free lunch.

http://www.thelocal.se/14522/20080923/

It's a problem to be sure, but don't try to make it out to be the absolute truth.

Ok then. We won't miss you.
12:57 April 29, 2009 by VikingHumpingWitch
This gets my vote for most misleading headline ever published on The Local. "Firefighters call it quits" suggested to me that they were all giving up. In fact one of them is resigning from a management post. Poor show.

Whilst we can all agree that people who throw rocks at firefighters need a damn good shoeing, I think his point is that the police are not prepared to do their bit in protecting the firefighters. Why do we pay them again?
13:25 April 29, 2009 by DidiE
Would like to add that intimate partner violence does not necessarily connote 'rape.' Rather, it is taken to mean a much broader category of behaviours that you might label domestic violence, or family violence, or wife battering. Let's be careful with our labels here, as you are not really refuting anything if you want to discuss rape under this rubric.

Regarding the issue of hooligans attacking the rescue services, wouldn't it be logical to assume that it isn't IMMIGRANTS with a capitol I who are doing this as one united group, but more than likely a loosely organised gang of adolescents and young adult males, many of whom may well have grown up in Sweden their whole lives? Let's not be too quick to excuse behaviour based on post-traumatic stress syndrome. Justifying behaviour that can result in loss of life or property on the foreign policies of US government is a little far fetched.
14:06 April 29, 2009 by Eurostan
some are from iran saying that they are educated and held high positions in iran. if you are doctor in iran, dish washing job or newpaper distributer job is too high for that doctor. that education is not valid in sweden or any other western or eastern countries. may be valid in middle east or afghanistan.

you are moved out from your country means that something problem is there with culture or religion or people.

As a immigrant you are the wrong person mostly . some thing is wrong with your people thinking.
14:12 April 29, 2009 by VikingHumpingWitch
Actually the main reason (out of many, many) was because I couldn't afford house prices in my country and got fed up of having to move home every 12 months. Does this make me The Wrong Person or are you perchance talking out of the orifice I reserve for the explusion of waste products?
16:05 April 29, 2009 by mkvgtired
BlackfDes, spoken word for word from a Western European Government owned newspaper. Immigration is supposed to be hard, you are moving to a new country. The hard work involved breeds the success many immigrants enjoy (excluding in Europe). Providing never ending social services does not seem to be working.

Anila, you are blaming all your problems on "Christian countries". I am assuming you mean US foreign policy. How are Christians and other minorities treated in Muslim countries then? Probably like royalty the way you profess your moral superiority.
16:06 April 29, 2009 by Iraniboy

that education is not valid in sweden or any other western or eastern countries. may be valid in middle east or afghanistan.

I no longer respond to your posts because you have never been in Swedish univeristy to see how Iranian bachelor/master/doctoral degrees are being accepted by Swedish universities!! You're living in your own dreams and I can't help it. Pitty you have the name of Euro but hardly qualified for that.
18:52 April 29, 2009 by Kaethar
They keep on calling them immigrants in the articles so that's why I'm calling them immigrants. But many are probably born here, I agree. And other interviews show that it's mainly bored youth who are causing trouble just for the sake of causing trouble.

Here is an interesting article about it (in Swedish)

http://sydsvenskan.se/malmo/article429062/...Herrgarden.html

Basically, it's:

They can't get jobs because of their background + they're poor living on welfare + they're bored + there are racist police = riots

They even attack the people from the newspaper stating they're "not on their side." War mentality. Definitely a problem.
19:25 April 29, 2009 by Azzure
Actually, the US has a similar problem due to unenforced illegal immigration from South America, especially Mexicans. Most of them are illiterate and criminals, and also cross the border with pregnant girlfriends or wives to have children (which automatically become citizens) and go on Fed. and state assistance programs. Public schools and hospital emergency rooms are full of them, creating both cultural and financial problems for the rest of the population. Now that Obama is in the situation is getting worse. Political correctness and thirst for power (Democrat votes in this case) will destroy the West as we know it.
22:19 April 29, 2009 by BlackfDes
mkvgtired in reply to your comment.

I don't disagree that immigration is hard ... its something I am going through at the moment. But its made more difficult because the society is "closed" ... if you were not born in Scandinavia then the obstacles that you have to overcome are much more considerable than they should be. If you compare the immigration policy of Australia which plonks its refugees on Christmas Island several thousand kilometres off the Australian coast until they are checked and vetted.

I know of examples in Swedish business where the corporate language is advertised as English yet every e-mail sent within the organisation is in Swedish - how does somebody who has not yet learned the language do their job and integrate effectively if they are confronted by this? Sure you have to learn the language but it will take at least a year or two before one is fully fluent.

And what about foreign students? If a summer internship comes up and the choice is between an average Swedish student or an international student with high grades which person do you think will get the internship? 100% of the time it will be the home team looking after their own. Does that sound fair?

Here in Uppsala the Migration Board is "conveniently" located down a side alley off a main road 3 or 4 kilometres from the centre of town with a small sign hidden among an array of other more prominent ones indicating its relative proximity. Why not have the office in town? Is the cost of office space in Uppsala that high that it prevents the agency from being able to afford an office in a more central locale? It is a question I will be asking them, why are you out here in the middle of nowhere?

The Swedish state provides a wealth of opportunities and has a relatively open border policy but it needs to investigate the underlying issues that are causing the increasing level of violence before it spirals out of control. Whether it is immigrant youth or Swedish youth thIf the Police can't protect their fellow emergency service personnel what hope do Swedish citizens have in the face of increasing violence?

cheers

Black One, can't say that I agree with your politics, but you do point out something I've never noticed before. The Migrationsverket office in Jönköping, while in the centre of town, is hidden down a back way with a small sign. If you never went there before, you would have a hard time finding it. Interesting.

It would be cool if MV were located in the middle of the kommun authority building, by the library, next to the administration offices etc., to give a visual signal to one and all that immigrants are part of the society.
10:17 April 30, 2009 by magic1964
I don´t know in history any other immigrants who have received so much than the immigrants in Scandinavia...free school, free health care, money support, houses etc etc.......so maybe this is the problem, when you get things for free you take it for grantet and then you mistreatet.

Double Concerto got it right earlier. The apparent 'need' to be Politically Correct, no matter what the obvious cause may be, has led to huge problems in the UK. Sadly, Sweden, and its multi-cultural apologists, appear happy to keep their heads in the sand or, more probably, up their own asses. A successful 'multi-cultural' society (if such can ever exist) cannot exist alongside Islam, which is not a race or culture, but another superstitious religion that believes that all others are infidels. Islam is inimical to both all other faiths and democratic principles. It is viewed by its followers as transcending all other aspects of life - nationality, culture, belief etc. Maybe this is a wake-up call. It's certainly badly needed throughout Europe.
16:23 April 30, 2009 by VikingHumpingWitch
Am I the only one a bit confused by the idea that Muslims are attempting to impose their way of life by burning bins? I'd have thought spreading the word would be a more usual and indeed successful recruiting tactic. At the risk of being labelled politically correct, I suspect this is more a bunch of bored, undisciplined kids and less part of the global plot to impose a new Caliphate.

Some of Islam's followers believe it transcends nationality and is a political movement. Some just call their god Allah instead of God and do what everyone else does. I also know Catholics who use condoms.
16:37 April 30, 2009 by Regor
For those of you that do not understand what's going on in Sweden and its cultural difficulties; I suggest you read the book "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

After reading the book you will understand why there is a major cultural difference and conflict between our Western culture and the Muslim culture that is based on and still practiced the way it was in the 6th century.

As long as a sovereign country does not insist and enforce adherence to their laws, then anarchy is not too far away. Religious freedom is one thing, but the local laws must be adhered to. The Muslim doctrine of world dominance is much more frightening then Hitler and the Nazi's way to get there!
17:23 April 30, 2009 by Querist
"At the risk of being labelled politically correct, I suspect this is more a bunch of bored, undisciplined kids and less part of the global plot to impose a new Caliphate." (VHW)

Question: So is it your contention that there are NO 'ethnic' Swedish youths who are not similarly bored and undisciplined?

That's a very prejudiced thing to contend. Yes?
