Swedish men have become more metrosexual and less masculine in recent times, according to a new survey polling both sexes on their opinion of the Swedish male.

51 percent of respondents said Swedish men were more masculine in previous times, with men in particular (58 percent) agreeing with the statement. Only 13 percent of men and women felt today's men were more masculine than their predecessors.

Asked whether Swedish men were more masculine than their counterparts in other countries only 9 percent of Swedish women felt this to be the case. 19 percent said Swedish chaps were less masculine, though the overwhelming majority (65 percent) said they were neither more nor less masculine than foreign fellows.

Swedish women also like their mates to stand up straight and be counted. Asked to choose between five alternatives, 33 percent of women found slouched shoulders and poor posture to be the least attractive physical qualities in a potential partner.

28 percent said overweight partners were a no-no, while 18 percent ruled out partners with feminine features, 8 percent disliked scrawniness and 0 percent found masculine features to be a turn-off. The 'None of the above' and 'don't know' options made up the numbers.

For men (36 percent), the weight issue topped the list of least attractive physical features, followed by posture (18 percent), masculine features (18 percent), scrawniness (10 percent) and feminine features (3 percent).

Moving away from the physical side of things, both men (44 percent) and women (43 percent) listed 'a good sense of humour' as by far the most attractive quality in a partner.

Very few respondents considered job success to be the top draw in a partner: 2 percent of women and 1 percent of men.

Both women and men were also asked which type of man they found most attractive. A lot of men chose to skip this question but on the whole those who did answer agreed with the replies of their female compatriots, who responded as follows:

- The normal "boy next door type, like TV show host Fredrik Wikingsson": 26 percent.
- The James Bond type in a tailored suit: 18 percent.
- The metrosexual type, "like football player Fredrik Ljungberg": 13 percent.
- The slightly chilled out type, "like actor Rolf Lassgård": 6 percent.
- The tough muscle mountain, "like Sylvester Stallone in the Rambo movies": 3 percent.
-The lanky, musician type, "like musician Andreas Kleerup": 3 percent.

7 percent of respondents had somebody else entirely in mind, while a further 7 percent couldn't make up their minds.

The internet-based study was carried out by YouGov on behalf of MBT Shoes. The polling agency received responses from 1,003 people aged 15-64 and spread across the country.

the overly stereotyped idea of masculinity has turned civilized and evolved men off, there is nothing at all wrong with being "metro sexual". genders importance in society is overinflated. my sex, and sexual preference is nobodies business other than my lovers and possibly my doctors, but the act of being "masculine" could very much effect others due to the fact that men have been conditioned to believe they must conform to a strict set of characteristics or else risk being replaced and knocked out of the evolutionary process. its about time MEN realize that brand allegiance, national heritage, hard edged rough and dumbed down, unrefined, loud and obnoxious self imposed ignorance, doesn't make us more sexy or in any way more deserving of the good life.

I personaly tycker inte om masculine men...that's why I chose my man...

This is a fairly big well dujh.

Yeah quite. These days they wash and feed themselves.

Personally, I disagree with the word "masculine" being used to mean "essentially a giant baby with added arrogance." But that's just me.
15:03 April 29, 2009 by Mack
thanks for that... it made me smile this morning. A lot of women do like having another child to look after. My niece is married to a guy we refer to as her pet.

Masculine has nothing to do with being a misogynistic chauvanist. It has nothing to do with being arrogant or ignorant either.

A man that has a strong, confident personality based on the ability to interact and succeed in a variety of roles is masculine. Masculine is being able to do traditional male tasks tempered with the skills to cook, clean and change diapers, for example. What woman wouldn't want a man who runs a business, can remodel the kitchen and babysit the kids? Masculine has nothing to do with being better than women. It has everything to do with being a strong partner.

Just my opinion.

Cheers,

Caleb

I've been to Sweden last winter and I can say I did not notice a difference of masculinity between the males there and the ones in my native country, Romania. In RO, there is also a class of, let's say, "machos" (along with their female counterpart), people who crowd public places and show off, but this class is tightly connected to a low level of culture and education.

I think this image about swedish males is related to the country high level of (homogenous) education which results in rationality and impulse control.

I profit of this opportunity to bring to your attention that a theory which addresses compatibility and relationships emerged, namely Socionics. It addresses psychological types, erotic attitudes (related to the article: caregiver - infantile, aggressor - victim), information and energy flow in society. Considering that Sweden has, imho, one of the most open-minded governments, I hope the day when it would advertise these methods on a large scale is near.

Well, sometimes ti does seem that men need to learn to be more "masculine" like...;) On the whole, it is for a woman to decide...;)

unfortunately, women have more balls then men here. and when her balls get bigger, his balls shrink accordingly.
22:52 April 29, 2009 by wxman
Gee, ya think? Compare these types side by side with a Viking and his battle ax and this article becomes a painfully obvious "DUH".
22:54 April 29, 2009 by 7
why would she care if he can babysit someone else's kids?
15:26 April 30, 2009 by Punchbear
Why is this news? It's like saying "Moon not made of cheese, China not on moon".

Swedish blokes are vain, effeminate, ineffectual preeners who spend more time looking at themselves than at women.

Which frankly is a little gay.

i think u summed it up perfectly buzzhunt....100% correct!

thank god for feminism ay?
10:49 May 1, 2009 by shpongle
Yes I'm sure all the alpha males of the world discusses masculinity on the internet. I'm sorry, but slandering swedish men won't make your homoerotic dreams about them go away.
14:03 May 1, 2009 by Kevgio
no one's slandering anyone, its the general consensus coming from an outsider looking in and from someone who has seen and experienced many cultures and nationalities.

its kind of funny how whenever topics of this nature come up on the local u get that typical cutting down to size by the sterotypical 'people in question'.

its obvious that its the truth and it hits a nerve with some people!

no one's saying either if its wrong, right, good or bad its the way it is and no one should be offended by this.
14:43 May 1, 2009 by shpongle
Wrap it up in whatever way you like. But it matters little, apparently we are just as feminine.

"though the overwhelming majority (65 percent) said they were neither more nor less masculine than foreign fellows."
14:45 May 1, 2009 by VikingHumpingWitch
I'm saying it's a good thing. If by masculine we mean unable to do anything for himself at home. I'm all for men acting like adults.
01:16 May 2, 2009 by Gurkhan
in my opinion, this study also reveals out what the swedish people deem as a match for themselves... overall it turns into something quite similar to the aryan models of gustav bäckman, i think...

What's the definition of a "masculine" man? Somebody who neglects his kids, hits his woman, gets drunk every night, sleeps around? Basically Detective McNulty on The Wire.
21:50 May 5, 2009 by Greg in Canada
Do they mean that Swedish men don't do masculine things like rape, pillage and plunder like their Viking ancestors?

What wussies modern Swedish men has become. :-)
22:43 May 14, 2009 by Sk8terGirl
Swedish men are so sexy, although conversing with them is like pumping a dry well.
22:50 May 14, 2009 by Stebro
it's a matter of definition...for me being masculine is about standing up for what's right, and doing the right thing, no matter what
22:51 May 14, 2009 by Markbase with an Invisible Q
Hej Stebro, good to see you. Keeping a low profile these days?
22:54 May 14, 2009 by Stebro
Hej Mark! Depends on what you mean really...on the local yes...in general no...been arguing a lot with politicans as usual...putting pressure on the ones who cheat and disrespect the people by not respecting the democracy

how have you been?
23:00 May 14, 2009 by Markbase with an Invisible Q
Pretty good, thanks.

Nice to hear you're giving the powers-that-wannabe some grief - keep them on their toes.

(To everyone else - sorry for highjack...)

Anyway, you gonna be in Stockholm in early-June? I'm heading that way for a short break (5th-8th).

Maybe you'd like to join a few of us? For beers?
23:06 May 14, 2009 by Stebro
I don't know actually, I'll be in London during early June, but probably not during those dates since Springsteen is in town, which also is the "problem"
23:07 May 14, 2009 by Markbase with an Invisible Q
Me and VHW will be in town at the same time. We have a thread which I'll update... Just visit here occasionally, OK?
23:10 May 14, 2009 by Stebro
alright, will do..
23:57 May 14, 2009 by freethinker
What is meant by masculine? A real man is someone who keeps to his commitments, does not harm women, is not a drunken useless unemployed moron. A real man knows how to treat a woman. So many here in the States don't know how to please a woman sexually. What a crime really. As a man it's my job to do everything within reason to satisfy the woman I'm with. Logic comes to play here...the more into it a woman is the more I get out of it...oooo doggie...lol! It all comes down to what I refer to as guy math. A fem + her fullfilled physical desires + her emotion needs realized = more frequent sex, and a very satisfied team as in we both get what we want. Gotta love guy math! Sex really is like chinese food; it's not over til ya both get your cookies.
