A teenager had sex with 500 men over five years of being forced to work as a prostitute. The trial against a Stockholm couple accused of involvement in the pimping operation came to a close this week.

The girl, who is originally from Estonia, was forced to begin working as a prostitute from the age of 17. She continued for a further five years under the threat of violence, according to a report in the newspaper Metro.

Aside from being forced, by a mixture threats, violence and coercion to work as a prostitute with over 500 Swedish clients, the girl was made to work in a Tallinn strip club.

The girl was finally set free when the father of her then boyfriend paid a significant sum of money to buy her out, the newspaper reports.

The Stockholm couple on trial for pimping charges, are suspected of having kept a number of girls.

The trial against the Stockholm couple came to a close this week. They deny the charges of aggravated pimping.

I am sure they will walk considering the absurd judiciary system in Sweden. They may use monkey tactics like the money generated from the forced prostitution was subjected to tax, therefore no law was broken. Or maybe they have some political connection etc, etc………….. Heja Sverige!

These low down criminal types will make a bee line to Sweden, where they know that no matter how rotten the crime it will be given a wet slap on the wrist and then back to business. There does appear to be a certain lack of resolve in Sweden these days and the criminals have latched on to it and are making their way there from the world over. A disaster for the decent folk who are the victims of this policy of see no evil, speak no evil.

I am appalled at the record of Sweden in this area. What with the news that Sweden has one of the highest rates of rape is disgraceful. Don't the Swedish ever get angry about anything? Do they really wnat their country to become known as the crime centre of europe?
13:44 April 30, 2009 by dtes
and i left america for sweden with the intent of contributing to a peaceful civilized society. i should have just read the local for two years, i would have stayed home, cuz this place is a joke, at least america would punish the criminals, there is no way one could get away with something like this in the states!

One of the few remaining things that Sweden and the Swedes are good at is reminding/advising the rest of the world that they (Sweden&Swedes) are simply the best at everything.

I can see I'm not the only ones to think Sweden's present laws....SUCK! hearing things like a person murdered someone and getting only 10-15 years, a person who admits to having this hidden shoe camera but will not get charged because the Swedish authorities can't identify the victims!

Amazing how you take this news and make it into another "why Sweden sucks" discussion.

Please return to the US. You're a new poster but I'm already sick of you.
17:42 April 30, 2009 by mkvgtired
I have seen many other threads of unending rants about why America sucks but Swedes don't seem to mind them.
18:47 April 30, 2009 by michellebz
I agree, Sweden's laws are a bit out of wack. Just think of the Pirate Bay defendants, who each got a year -- when one of these men only got eight months? How is illegal file sharing (where there are no real, physical victims) a more heinous crime than the repeated gang rape of multiple girls?
00:57 May 1, 2009 by DeepFriedTwinky
Well....Well, Kaethar. I guess you do LOVE the present Swedish laws. I think several post about why Sweden sucks because they're sick of people who are victims get the shaft while the criminals get s slap on the wrist. I guess you LOVE seeing victims, in Sweden, have no justice. "Please return the US" Why? You don't have to be in Sweden to make comments about your relaxed laws. Look, such a high rape percentage in Europe! I hated living in Sweden while Swedish people bash the US and they think Sweden is in an upper class.

Come on! Everyone has bad people and bad events, but please realize, in Sweden, your laws suck when it comes to prosecuting the criminals.

I do agree, Sweden, is a beautiful place, met many wonderful people in Sweden, and love the bond for keeping some old traditions.

Sweden is an awesome place to live, but their laws suck. Ok. . .ok. . .there are places around the world where their law and justice suck a lot more.

End.

Sweden is a beautiful place to live, an awesome place to live, I met many wonderful people in Sweden, but the law suck! Ok ...ok...I do agree. ..there are far worst places around the world where their laws suck a lot more.

I read "Box21" which was written by 2 Swedish authors. The story was exactly about this problem....

Well, shame on the officials.

But, under Swedish law, isn't she already considered an "adult"?

If so, she could pursue criminal charges.

I'm not saying she was bad here, I'm saying she should use the laws and courts to fight what is right.

BTW, Sweden IS a wonderful place. All good countries have their problems, and it is not to be misconstrued that Sweden is a bad place... bad stuff happens. I wish all well in this circumstance, well, not the bad ones.
09:13 May 1, 2009 by Oskarsmamma
Why not wait and see what the verdict will be eh?

As for people "bashing" Sweden - if Swedes think its okay to bash the USA and England etc. over things they do, then its okay to do the reverse.

All I heard was anti-USA and English comments during the Irak War yet many of these protesting against USA would be wearing American brand clothing, listening to American music etc. etc.

If you can't take it - don't give it.

Human trafficking and sex slavery is a huge international problem and there have been numerous cases of young girls being forced into the sex industry in the UK and USA have also had a huge number of cases.

It is a problem that is very hard to prosecute - often the women are brought over for just a few months and then sent back which hinders the police investigation.

However I am very puzzled by this article in the Local as it is not clear why it is being slanted as a "Swedish" problem at all - according to the article's text the girl was forced to work in a strip-club in Tallin - now as far as I know Tallin is NOT in SWEDEN - but is the capital of Estonia. So why are people on this forum pereive it as a Swedish problem? Or did they fail geography at school?

Obviously this international sex trade needs more cases like this - usually the main ringleaders escape punnishment by moving/living abroad. But in this case Sweden has chosen to prosecute even though the crimes were committed in another country. Shouldn't we be welcoming this?
11:36 May 1, 2009 by Kaethar
They haven't been sentenced yet. Personally I'm sick of spammers who bash Sweden in every thread for no reason. Create a random thread where you can rant on your own and stick to it, please.

Because he wants to, of course. Then we'll have one less person whining but not doing anything about it.

Glad you left, then.

Oo, I see the stereotypical American arrogance coming through. Pity. And you claim Swedes think they're superior? Our laws don't suck according to absolute truth, only according to OPINION. I for the most part agree with the Swedish justice system since I believe firmly in rehabilitation over punishment. Who the hell are you to claim that I'm wrong?

Yes, because thinking everyone should live by your values in life isn't arrogant at all...

I agree.

The bar owners were Swedish and I would guess that a large number of the clients were Swedish as well. Unfortunately a large number of Swedish and Western men just saw the collapse of the Soviet Union as an opportunity for cheap sex with young girls. A number of countries are now prosecuting their citizens for crimes commited outside their respective countries. In Canada there have been a few cases where the government have gone after people that went to Thailand for sex with young girls and boys. I think it is high time Western countries take responsibility for there own pervs...

Lilja 4-Ever :(

come on people, sweden needs another set of revolutions to come over the sickness left in the social culture... it can be corrected... not with the present state system though..

I worked as a voluntary lawyer for an association against teens and children prostitution in my country (France). Sadly, things happen in Sweden, but it is not the worst European country I've seen.

Judiciary and legal systems as well as values (rehabilitation over punishment for instance) differ from one countrie to another, and no system is flawless or prevail on the other. There's no point whatsoever in arrogant blamings of other countries and their locals. People should start by putting energy in cleaning the crap in front of their own door, and there's a lot to do in each country in terms of human trafficking, forced prostitution or rape. What happened to this girl is "just" another example of the mess going fairly well on within our European frontiers.

Fair comment, well said.
13:28 May 2, 2009 by krdx
Well, this things happen everywhere and you can not blame just one country. I agree with Kaethar for rehabilitation of punishment. As I am foreigner in Sweden, I can say, even tough there are some unfair things, but Sweden is one of the peaceful country of the world. For the one who bashes to Sweden: Please look back to your country, what HELL did USA in Iraq, Afghanistan and creating underground organizations (in Italy, in Turkey,..)and just please remember O.J Simpson court. I see that, current governors would like to change Swedish rules to be like USA but I hope it will not happen. Long Live Sweden.
13:52 May 2, 2009 by Kaethar
I agree. There will be a supply as long as there is a demand. Because there is hardly any home-grown prostitution in Sweden human trafficking has of course grown instead.

...

Explain please.

Well said.

Some of Sweden's laws do need to be reformed but copying the American punishment system would certainly not be a good start.

You know it's interesting. I think Sweden's own incredible freedom of speech laws (the most liberal in the world, if I'm not mistaken) will reveal every ugly boil and cancer found in the Swedish society. Having lived in Asia for over 20 years, I can tell you that this kind of pimping is very common in Asian countries and it's rarely if ever prosecuted. Meantime, they have harsh laws against murder and drug smuggling. Death penalty in Singapore for drugs.

God forbid any critical remarks against Lee Kwan Yew or his family. Several newspaper, (most notably the Asian Wall Street Journal) get fined for libel very frequently.

I do think it has something to do with the fact that Swedish media tells everything, warts and all. I would be surprised if other countries didn't have the same problems.
