A court in Malmö convicted two 15-year-old girls from southern Sweden for the “torture-like” beating of another 13-year-old girl in a dispute over insulting text and internet chat messages.

The incident took place six months ago in the elevator of a residential building in the Möllevången of Malmö, reports the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

The two 15-year-old’s lured the younger girl into the elevator in order to exact revenge for demeaning messages posted by the 13-year-old via the MSN internet chat website.

“Why have you been so tough on the screen and called me things?” asked one of the 15-year-olds before the start of the assault, according to Sydsvenskan.

The two older girls then knocked the 13-year-old to the ground and began to kick her repeatedly in the head and torso.

They also pressed lit cigarettes into the younger girl’s chest and hands while at the same time calling other friends to come and witness the revenge attack.

A total of nine young people eventually arrived on the scene, and at one point the 15-year-olds forced the 13-year-old girl to lick the shoes of one of the boys standing in the group.

The beating continued for nearly four hours, and before leaving the scene, one of the 15-year-old’s threatened the younger girl with a pistol.

The 13-year-old spent four days in the hospital following the beating. Six months on, her nose remains swollen and she continues to have trouble breathing, the newspaper reports.

In delivering its guilty verdict on Wednesday, the Malmö District Court characterized the 15-year-old’s attack of the 13-year-old as “raw”, “drawn out”, “torture-like”, and “deeply degrading”.

The two teenagers were convicted of aggravated assault, obstructing justice, as well as for making illegal threats and were sentenced to juvenile rehabilitation and community service. They were also ordered to pay 21,000 kronor ($2,640) in damages.

The court added that, had the two teens been adults, the severity of their crimes would have likely resulted in two-year prison sentences for them both.

Let me get this straight, not only do the girls get off with a very small sentence, but an adult would have only gotten two years!? WTF...I mean come on, the two girls should have gotten a minimum of 10 years and an adult should get life in prison, why am I so harsh, because people like this who commit PREMEDITATED violent crimes should not be allowed to get out of jail in order to commit these types of crimes again. Recidivism rates among violent offenders is extremely high, throw them in a cell and throw away the key! And I bet "juvenile rehabilitation" means rooms with TV Playstation and candy! What is wrong with Sweden's criminal justice system?

They gave the 13 year old girl a life long physical and psychological pain and this is the best the law can do??? What a shame!!!

Wow! Two whole years !!

Not only is Sweden becoming a horrible and dangerous place to live, considering all the rapes and passive aggressive behaviour of many. It also compensate those that commit serious offences with a nip on the culo. VIGILANTE

Not only is the sentence for the two key girls rediculously light, how about the other 7 teens that watched without calling in the police. The school system and parents that bring up their children to this type of behaviour should be looked at as well!!!

Thats what you get when there is too much darkness in the winter and too much daylight in the summer....Demented kids, teachers, and legal system

That poor little girl. She will probably have respiratory problems for the rest of her life. 4 HOURS STRAIGHT OF RUTHLESS BEATING and all the offenders got was a $2600 fine? I feel bad for Swedes and Europeans in general, most seem genuinely concerned about crime rates. When I was there one month ago that seemed to be the biggest concern among most Europeans (and the economy of course). It seems like most government officials turn a blind eye to the crimes being committed within their borders. I hope they realize that by doing this eventually there will be an explosion of vigilante justice and right wing extremism.

"Sweden becoming a horrible and dangerous place to live"... you must be joking "peropaco"... I am curios to know where do you live in Sweden...

Well done for managed to get round all 47 member countries of the Council of Europe while you we here a month ago and managing to gain a perspective on attitudes to violent crime that sum up the popular viewpoint of the populace of each of those countries. I tell you what, if I'd managed to do such a magnificent bit of polling I'd go on about it a bit more and not just throw it away as a bit of fact passed off as opinion on an internet forum.

If it were my kids involved in, watching or participating.. I would buy a ticket back home for me and the kid... get on American soil and beat the living hell out of my kid for it. I will not let my kids treat others in such a hate filled manner.

Anyone doing the beating, it will be me.

Shame on the parents. No morals taught in home.

My kids would be wishing for the slap on the hand Sweden gives out.

If they were my kids (and I don't care how old they are), I'd abort them.

i am 26 years old, this has happened to me 10 year ago and several times betwene 16 and 18 years,it has traumatized me that i didnt go out anymore for a long time,it turned into agoraphobia and other pbs.

i tried to move from Paris but didnt like the life in other big cities wich i find also violent and stressful.I got even a good job here in Paris with car ...

last summer i discovered Malmo and i said here i want to live, well i was around Vastra Hamnen wich is very quiet neiborhood, still 10 years later being in Paris reminds me of those bad things,i can wish that soon i will find a quiet country where i can restart

yes i definately agree with Harding00,because these behaviours can lead to terrible complications

In these specific circumstances pro-life activism is *aborted* and takes place pro-lethal injections.

Ladies and gentlemen, what are you all complaining about?

Haven't you observed that such ridiculous-why-even-bother sentences are rife in the so-called developed countries except in the US if you are black.

I lived in Sweden for two years before moving to the UK and trust me, there is no violence in Sweden. The sentences here are a professional joke so such stories are more here.

In both places, if per chance the person eventually gets sent to jail, he/she will receive Playstation, Satellite TV etc all in the name of human rights.

Anyway, more of such pathetic sentences & conditions, crime will simply increase or better still, the assailant can always claim insanity or diminished state of responsibilty at time of incident

So much for developed or civilized countries. If someone is willing to inflict harm on others, he/she and any participating party should receive an appropriate sentence which will serve as a suitable deterrent

wow 2 years had they been adults for this, 7 years for the guy who raped 2 girls over a 16hr period of time.... when will sweden wake up, realize that bad people do bad things, and start protecting the good people by handing out harsh sentences?
20:10 May 16, 2009 by Mzungu
Rather like the phase "the pot calling the kettle black" init?

*compare statistic with your home country*
20:15 May 16, 2009 by Yanksalot
sorry mzungu but your comment makes no sense, what exactly is your point? Any stats you would like to quote or

are you just generalizing?

For two older girls at least 7 year prison with 50000 Kr fine, and others should have at least six months juvenile prison education with 3000 Kr fine each. Except that all these people must take all resposibility including financial aid of that 13 year old girl until she fully recoer.

Some schools provide parents counseling programs to suggest and give good guidance about parenting their girls. There are so many girls schools programs which is actually organized to solve problems between teenage girls and their parents. These schools are truly helpful towards the girls.

Wow...2 Years as an adult? What kind of mind do you think they have when they beat someone innocent(?)depends what she texted, these days people react to idiotic stuff. Even if it was bad, you report it) for 4 hours and burn her with a cigarette. They damaged her body, and they only pay 2.6k... To not be able to breath like you use to, and having a swollen body for some time, they better pay for this.^$#.

Again, beat for 4 hours(4 hours is a long time), for sure verbal abuse as well, burn her, people around her doing nothing and they get pretty much nothing. The judge must have had amazing logic?

And if there were kids watching, and no one called the cops, are they not involved? They should get some kind of warning?

Conclusion = you won't get that much time and won't have to pay much, bring your friends, specially you silly kids
