Sweden and Malena Ernman could only manage a 21st place and 33 votes in Saturday's Eurovision Song Contest. Scandinavian neighbour Norway had a perfect start to national day celebrations by claiming the title.

Malena Ernman with "La Voix" was the fourth entry performed in the Moscow final. She followed three slow ballads and prior to the tournament this was seen as an advantage as it was argued to help her lofty operapop number to stand out from the crowd.

But alas it was not to be for Ernman and a disappointed Sweden, denied a fifth Eurovision crown by pre-tournament favourites and neighbourly rivals, Norway, represented by Alexander Rybak with "Fairytale".

Ernman, at a press conference after her crushing loss, explained that she was "happy anyway" with her performance and Eurovision experience.

"I am happy and satisfied and now I shall go home to my profession that I love. This week has been an exciting episode in my life," Ernman said to news agency TT.

May 17th is Norway's national day - a massive celebration of all things Norwegian in the towns and cities of the oil-rich nation, and even in some parts of Sweden where expatriate communities exist.

The day was given the perfect start for when Rybak confirmed pre-tournament expectations and took home the 54th Eurovision crown.

Ernman was generous in her praise for Rybak and magnanimous in defeat.

"Fantastic for Norway. He was my favourite before the tournament. And fantastically cheap for us next year who only have to travel to Norway," Ernman said to news agency TT.

Norway claimed 387 points followed by runner-up Iceland and Yohanna with "Is it true" on 218 points. Azerbaijan came in third with their Swedish-backed duet Always on 207 points.

Almost a third of Sweden's nine million population were glued to their television sets on Saturday night as Moscow put on a glittering show.

Norway now takes over the mantel with the 55th Eurovision Song Contest planned for Oslo in May 2010.

Did anyone else have a chuckle at the Danish entry? The song was co-written by Ronan Keating and it was obvious that the singer had been coached by him as he actually sang with a Ronan Keating accent. Very funny.

Oh, man- we loved the Dansk boy. The Americans in the family all swore he'd have had a number one hit in the US. He sounded pure country to us. We voted for him, against the wishes of the Swedes.

Mox Mox The Manburner stalker is back ;-) Your mischievous apathy transgresses the realm of formidable idiocy coupled with a flippancy of no avail. May I suggest a large joint of Panamá Red and a lukewarm can of Sofiero beer? Make that 10% alcohol.

Now that Obermeister Bob have merged the "Eurovison fever" thread into this one, my comment makes no sense.

Seriously Bob, perhaps it is time to chill out and let things ride. So what if there are more than one active thread talking about the same topic, haven't you hear about survival of the fittest?

How about some hands off moderation and save your intervention for the personal insults or racist threads

Don´t know. The more he posts here the more I see certain similarities. Then again, I haven´t read all of his posts so I´m not sure at all. But this one certainly must have crawled up from the same hole in the ground as that other guy.

She was a bit intense... all that staring directly into the camera with little smile like she had just boiled your bunny rabbit. I had nightmares about her as well as that rolly polly las who sung for Portugal... they were a bit like Hades version of Stan and Laurel...

Sorry to have to dissapoint you. Not interested in you at all, only in the racist and xenophobic posting that you do here. it reminded me of another one who used to post in a similar style, but who has been banned once more, it appears. At first I thought you were him. But I have to agree with Mzungu. He was much more articulate and imgainative. Sorry for the mixup

Part of a moderator's job is merging redundant threads. Both threads dealt with the same topic, and therefore it made perfect sense to merge them.

A while back someone posted a thread criticizing Bob for not merging several redundant threads. Now he has merged two redundant threads and he's being criticized for that. I guess he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Moxi Moxi, great to see to removed your head from your tuchas to realize not everyone is a complete tête de nœud as yourself.....
18:14 May 18, 2009 by Renfeh Hguh
I think locking one thread and linking to the active would be a less confusing way to do it rather than a merge.
