Church of Sweden rocked by sex scandals

The Church of Sweden has already been shaken by several sex scandals this year. Archbishop Anders Wejryd regrets the incidents, and maintains that transparency is the best policy.

In April, the diocese boards in Stockholm, Växjö and Lund had to address several sex-related incidents, including a priest who slept with a grieving widow, another who maintained an inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old and a third who hurled abuse at women on an internet dating site.

Wejryd regrets that the incidents occurred, but says it is positive the Church dealt with them.

“It is tragic, but I think that we have been successful in our ambition to get people to file reports,” Wejryd told news agency TT.

According to the archbishop, one of the Church's most widely distributed brochures provides the contact information for where to report sexual assault.

“It is available at churches and in parish offices. We don't want to foster a culture of silence. We want to require priests to take responsibility for their actions.”

Wejryd said he fully understood the media attention surrounding priests and sex?

“The combination of sex and an institution associated with morals is irresistible.”

A review of sexual assault reports filed against priests and deacons in the last several years shows that there have been a number of cases every year involving everything from porn-surfing priests to sexual harassment.

that is why people rightly said, Christaniity is the most im-practical religion. Those priest stopped themselves from the right way to fulfil this desire i..e marriage . now they are getting the results..

Everyday When I read news there is at least one article about Church fathers, and their sex scandals .Why they just don't get married?

I give credit to Islam when it comes to marriage. and Prophet Mohammad said.

Young men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality, but those who cannot, should devote themselves to fasting, for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire.

(Bukhari, Muslim).

"When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of the religion, so let him fear Go regarding the remaining half"
20:37 June 15, 2009 by Uncle
Ha, he also said :

"Fight and kill the disbelievers wherever you find them, take them captive, harass them, lie in wait and ambush them using every stratagem of war."

Qur'an:9:5

"Fight them until all opposition ends and all submit to Allah."

Qur'an:8:39

"As for one who disbelieves, we will fight him forever in the Cause of Allah. Killing him is a small matter to us."

Tabari IX:69

But yeah, I'll take a marriage advice from a guy who married 13 wives one of which was 9 y/o and the other - his cousin.

Well this is not true in any context.

i will answer ur points one by one.

1. First verse of Holy Quran that you qouted is in context with a deal with non-muslims, it is said which u qouted only the part which you wanted to highlighted that if they break promise then fight.

2. second one which you mentioned is in relevance with the non-muslims who captured in old times in arab a mosque of muslims. And a verse before this is said that if they abstain from what they did forgive them and if they don't then fight with them until that is ended.

just think if someone threat you and capture your house what you will do.

And last point. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) marriages will because of some purpose and according to teach some important points.

You can read about all of that at this website. www.alislam.org

So don't spread wrong knowledge about something which you don't know.

About first qoute ref. is

About second qoute ref. is http://www.alislam.org/quran/tafseer/?page=366&region=EN&CR=

To all reader, please read 1-2 verse of Holy Quran above and below to understand whole context of matter. Don't just pick lines and state that is something to criticize.

the above links are very good , specially it clears lots of misconceptions and even if you read previous comments on earliest news, those questions asked many times by our non-muslim brothers. Hope it wil clear them
22:51 June 15, 2009 by idialogue
Citizentimes: thanks but lets stick to the news ..

Indeed this sex scandals are not new in Christian era , i think the read might have allready read about "Jimmy Suagart" the one beaten in debate by "Shiekh Ahmed Deedat".

"Swaggart was found to involve with a prostitute at a Metaire, Louisiana" BBC..

it is not new , just it is growing, specially when now Priests know how to use Internet :) :)

If I am not wrong, you must be confusing the church of Sweden with the Catholic church. As far as I know, Catholic priests are the ones who take a vow of celibacy, the church of Sweden ones on the other hand can marry. The crimes mentioned here have less to do with celibacy and more to do with ...... insanity maybe?

At present there is a national scandal in Ireland concerning the Catholic Church. A nine year investigation report has revealed that children in care over the past 50>60 years have been mentally, physically and sexually abused in many institutions. These concerned Priest, Nuns, Christian brothers etc. The Irish Government has put a gagging order on victims nameing their abusers. The report outlines horror stories similar to Nazi concentration camps.

Its nothing short of criminal ... So dont tell me about the holy catholic and Ireland ... its hyprocracy...

Ps. I am Irish by the way ... just so you dont misunderstand where I am coming from.... These religious were monsters and evil.

Moslems use Taqiyya and Kitman to present a false, and positive, understanding of Islam. Koran 9.5 (Ayt al-Sayf, the Sword Verse) abrogates hundreds of other verses in the Koran; Suras (Chapters) 8 & 9 take precedence being regarded as last 'revealed' to Islam's warlord founder, Mohamed. The mandate to forcibly convert, persecute as dhimmis paying Jizya (protection monies) to Moslems, or to kill, all non-Moslems in the Koran is enlarged upon in the Hadith Muslim Bk No 4294. If the non-Moslems do not convert, demand they pay Jizya; if they refuse "seek Allah's help and fight them." This is to remain in force for all time until all peoples submit to Islam. Mohamed wed Aisha when she was 6; she was 9 when it was 'consummated' and he was 54. We call that paedophilia. 13 aHadith including Bukhari & Muslim: http://europenews.dk/en/node/5545

Lutheran is protestant. Named after Martin Luther, who was protesting, you see. Nothing whatsoever to do with Catholicism.

Why would clergymen be any better behaved than anyone else?

I don't deny that the church of Sweden was once part of the Catholic church. What I am saying is that they broke off from the Catholic church and made their own rules and one of those rules is that unlike the Catholic church, their priests are allowed to marry. The article was about church of Sweden priests and what they have done and should not be used to blame other churches

in 1628 the vasa ship sailed on its maiden voyage. 1km from its quay and 20 minutes later it sank in 30m of water. in 1954, amateur maritime archeologist, anders franzén, located the ship after searching for it. it was raised in 1961, 333 years after it sank.

today she is housed in a beautiful museum on djurgården, a must see on the visiting schedule of any tourist to stockholm. she is currently battling an internal decay problem (very complicated --which i'll gladly get more into should you find it relevant to the swedish church scandals).

i've personally been aboard the might ship. she's a stunner.

Mati - oh, it was SPECIFIC infidels? Oh, then it is OK. But what is funny, I just quote, but certain people use these quotes to explode in certain buses and restaurants. So it is not ME who spreads misconceptions, but the most devout muslims.

In regards to his marriage - I did not even get your point. What it is OK to be a pedophile and to commit incest because the following teachings connected them to some logical explanation? Are you feeling OK?

If he would marry a horse, it would symbolize his love for the nature and if he would marry his mom it would be a symbol for the respect of the parents?
22:08 June 17, 2009 by KrissyMK
I believe whether a priest is married or not if there is a mental imbalance taking place within that priest, or, to keep it fair, nun, depending on what the issue is it may not make a difference. Should marriage be an option? I believe so. Because I believe it's normal to crave that kind of attention, whether your a man or a woman. Does Swedish churches offer that kind of option? I can't make an educated enough answer to that. Mean while, the news always talks about the church but I'm sure this case can also take place within other religions. Just like the saying about the bad apple.
