As the Pirate Party is gearing up for Brussels, Swedish police authorities are ramping up their efforts against file sharers.

Last year's appointment of two special prosecutors assigned to copyright infringement and file sharing-related crimes has been bolstered by extra police resources, according to the Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper.

SvD reported that on several occasions the prosecutors have expressed frustration that the police's resources were insufficient to investigate file sharing and copyright infringement.

“There have been cases where we have had to drop investigations because we couldn't obtain the evidence quickly enough,” Henrik Rasmusson, one of the two prosecutors, told Sveriges Radio's P3 news.

An additional 15 officers, five each in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, have been appointed by national police authorities to assist the prosecutors in investigations of copyright infringement.

“We have received a mandate from the government to implement measures to make our efforts again file sharing more effective,” Stefan Eurenius, section head at the board of Swedish Police, told SvD.

Although most of the recent media attention has focused on internet piracy, authorities emphasize that these measures also cover other copyright-related crimes, such as knockoffs from brand-name clothing or furniture.

Oh yea, they take the extra personal from the rape devision.
16:43 June 15, 2009 by usgepo
This is ridiculous, insane, ludicrous , and a complete abomination, they do not have resources to protect people from crime and to investigate things that really matter such as paedophiles, rapists, the mafia, drug dealers, illegal immigration and their own officials or politicians charging personal items to the tax payers, and they will add resource to go after my baby sitter or my the kids in the neighbourhood, for downloading the latest Titney spears cd?

Common, wake up Swedish people, you should not put up with this let´s get involved send letters to politicians this bad!
16:48 June 15, 2009 by peropaco
How about ramping up the useless police force to combat rape, unsolved murders, child pornography etc?
17:05 June 15, 2009 by usgepo
We need to right mails and call Stefan Eurenius, sektionschef på Rikspolisstyrelsen I just heard that they only have 4 resources for child pornography cases, and yet they dedicate 15 extra for file sharing, who is paying for this protest people, protest!

Ask him how many resources they have the rampant identity theft in Sweden
17:38 June 15, 2009 by eZee.se
Silly people, dont you get it?

File sharing more important than rape

File sharing more important than child pornography

File sharing more important than pedophiles

File sharing more important than fighting drugs

File sharing more important than policing the trouble neighborhoods

after all the above mentioned problems only affect you and me, while file sharing affects very rich people from buying their next car, buying expensive whores, suppressing governments, passing crappy laws, cheating on their spouses, trying to suppress the internet, getting a nice big brother like state, getting corrupt judges, bribing politicians and other important things that you and i cannot understand, we are just supposed to pay for it.

Umm, pirate party anyone?
18:11 June 15, 2009 by usgepo
We pay taxes, let´s write to the politicians and stefan.eurenius@rps.police.se, in a nice civilized manner we can tell him how we feel. This is poor use of precious resources, the will only benefit big studio executhiefs!

Jackie Chiles? Is that you?
18:31 June 15, 2009 by Rubbi
I like the way you fail to read the whole story and just assume this is for downloading. This is also covers counterfeit clothing and furniture etc, but of course this is not important to you.
18:48 June 15, 2009 by The Lix-a
ahhhhh mp3 police, im scared haha! How are they going to police this, they could probably find illegally downloaded stuff on most peoples computers, telephones . Who are they gonna pick, use as examples!

Im just glad there is filesharing, maybe these untalented mongoloids on big labels get payed a bit less, less money for theyre stupid badly decorated cribs and no money to buy anymore beamers and hummers. These so called artists are laughing to the bank, what are they getting payed for huh?

Right turning on soulseek now, come get me mp3 police! you wont find any 50 cent or mariah carey tho.

oh i read the whole story, so what with counterfitting, the stuff they produce can be just as good as the original, but maybe not memory cards and stuff but still theyre cheap! Probably made in the same factory conditions too.
19:43 June 15, 2009 by usgepo
Rubbi, no one failed to read the whole story, regardless of the general nature of the investigative force charged with investigating this, it is still the fact that it is a waste of resources and tax payer funds! They should go after real hardcore criminals, not the average teen who is downloading a music video or a song.

Do you think the board members of Prada give a rats if they catch a criminal in Sweden for identity theft or rape, all they care about is their money!
19:59 June 15, 2009 by Tennin
Geez, I feel so much safer now knowing that there are more cops being put on file sharing duties.
20:05 June 15, 2009 by Rubbi
Who are you to say that police only should work on hardcore crime? There a plenty of other crimes that need resources. Once again you say you have read it but only mention music downloading that these 15 policeman across the country will be used for. What about the fake goods do you think this is a nothing crime? What about the expoloited young kids in illegal sweat shops around the world making these items. No that is not important to you maybe because it is not in Sweden so its nothing your tax money should be wasted on.

Until such time as the big corporations are restrained from creating long term monopolies and making such obscene profit margins, assisted by the Western Govts,I say best of luck to Pirate Bay.

Its a Robin Hood v Sheriff of Nottingham situation and I back Robin.

Very sad that the Govt.sees fit to waste resources helping the big companies feather their luxury nests instead of doing something more useful and constructive to help Joe Public.
21:13 June 15, 2009 by DAVID T
Once agian - so many people thinking file shareing / theft is ok. I really hope they come up with some software that can track everyone down and fine / jail them accordingly.
21:49 June 15, 2009 by spy
And execute them.
21:50 June 15, 2009 by Hauhr
Yo David T, no one in this thread has advocated that acting illegally is "OK" (whatever OK means). The discussion centers around how law enforcement should use the limited resources it has to best serve the public...

Should the police go after drug dealers or rather spotty teens downloading Agnes. Rapists or instead a woman on parental leave who downlaods episodes of Friends? Paedophiles or else an old man whos grandson downloaded Transformers because it hasn't been released in Sweden yet??
22:13 June 15, 2009 by usgepo
No one here is saying it is Ok to commit a crime nor condoning illegal downloading or counterfeit goods, merely stating that resources should be focused according to the severity of the crime, whose interest are more important, monetary gains for executives of these corporations or the victims of a rape, muggings, theft, an abused child, and their families, if you have experience that you would know what is like to be told, " sorry but we exhausted all leads on solving your case", your perpetrator still at large we must focus our resources on catching the lady who bought a fake purse in Thailand or the kid that downloaded a file over the net.

Counterfeit goods are not the cause of child labour! It is obvious who you people work for!
