Redundancies continue to rain down on Swedish workplaces

More than 6,000 people in Sweden were given notice last week that they would lose their jobs, setting the stage for January redundancy announcements to reach levels roughly four times greater than a year ago.

Published: 26 Jan 2009 15:29 CET

So far in January, 12,574 people have been given notice, a figure well above the total of 3,638 reached for the entire month of January 2008, according to new statistics from the public employment agency (Arbetsförmedlingen)

At the end of last week, 208,529 people were registered as unemployed with the agency.

This represents an increase of 2,310 in comparison with the previous week and 41,799 more than the corresponding week of 2008.

By the end of last week, a total of 199,359 people were registered as unemployed, an increase of 25,338 compared to the same period a year earlier.

The number of people on supported employment amounted to 75,293, an increase of 164 people compared to the previous week and a reduction of 14,420 compared to the same week last year.

There were also 85,852 people participating in employment support programmes, which represented an increase of 1,363 from the week before, and a rise of 24,261 compared to the corresponding week in 2008.

Last week, 13,642 new jobs were advertised with the agency, an increase of 1,620 from the previous week and 4,040 fewer than the corresponding week a year ago.
