Hammarby relegated as AIK and IFK vie for title

Stockholm club Hammarby, Swedish champions as recently as 2001, were relegated from the top flight on Wednesday night following a 2-4 defeat at Trelleborg.

“It´s hard to say anything specific right now. I think you can understand how it feels,” Hammarby captain Fredrik Söderström told pay-per-view television.

At the other end of the table, AIK's draw with Örebro leaves them needing just a point when they travel to IFK Göteborg on Sunday for a nail-biting title decider.

Martin Mutumba of AIK was the first to score – his third goal of the season – in the second half of the game. But the table toppers were made to pay for defensive frailties in the second half when Joos Hooiveld failed to clear the ball, sending it straight between AIK's own goalposts.

After the game, AIK coach Michael Stahre told press, “The team did OK, not more than that. We managed to get one point, which we needed, so in a way I´m satisfied with my team´s effort.”

After last night's match, AIK need to draw against IFK Göteborg this coming Sunday in order to claim the title. Despite the team's slight advantage, the battle for gold is very much alive thanks to two goals scored by Gothenburg striker Tobias Hysén in a match against Halmstad on Tuesday night that ended 2-2.

Elsewhere, newcomers Häcken were involved in a scoreless draw against Gefle at Rambergsvallen. Häcken have shown plenty of promise in their comeback season, narrowly missing out on qualification for the Europa League next year.

In the final game of Henrik Larsson's career, Helsingborg lost against Djurgården 0-2, leaving the Stockholm club well placed to retain its place in the Allsvenskan league for another season.

Djurgården have their fate in their own hands after fellow strugglers Örgryte could only manage a 1-1 draw at home to Elfsborg.
