'Streaming overtakes file sharing': report

Published: 13 Feb 2010 12:35 GMT+01:00
Updated: 13 Feb 2010 12:35 GMT+01:00

In the wake of the Pirate Bay court case in Sweden last year, which saw the conviction of the founders of the file sharing website, there was a sharp drop in the numbers of Swedes sharing films and music online.

But with increasingly faster broadband internet, more are now turning to services which offer streaming video, and eliminate the need for users to download copyrighted files and run the risk of prosecution.

"We calculate that file sharing will become less important, even though the actual numbers doing it will still increase," Henrik Bergqvist, technical manager at Cisco Sweden told news agency TT.

Inspired by the music service Spotify and the video streaming site Voddler, a new service, Video Bay, by Sweden's most well known file sharing advocates - the founders of the Pirate Bay - will be unveiled in the coming months. Streaming services are not illegal to watch under Swedish law but are illegal to upload.

While file sharing is expected to continue to grow at about 80 per cent per year in the coming years, Cisco predicts that it will be overtaken by online streaming which is expected to grow at about 130 per cent annually.

Its really quite simple:

Downloading requires you to have a client like utorrent or frostwire or dc++ (for you old school kids: KAZAA, Napster) etc, streaming is just visiting a webpage and watching - like youtube.

Problem is, most sites dont stream very good quality, but when you do find a site that does (for example episodeninja.com/) its trivial to save the stream as a download if you dont want to hook your computer up to your tv.

There are many streaming sites on the internet, here's some help:

in google use the search term:

two and a half men online episodes

and you'll see a host of them.

If you are using firefox simply use google to search for:

firefox streaming download addon

and you can then download a host of addons to download the stream.

If all you are after is audio:

you can save the stream from spotify or youtube or any other place (as long as you can hear the music on your speakers, you can save it) you can use Wire Tap Pro for the Mac or for windows there are loads of programs, some that were recommended to me by friends:

freecorder.com/freecorder3/ (never used it myself so dont have an opinion.

WMRecorder

Audacity

i-sound

etc

or just use google for:

save audio stream windows

(For windows a lot of programs are for sale or come on a trial basic, use before you buy so you know it works for you)

the best part about saving a audio/video stream: its **impossible** to detect via current anti piracy methods.

Or you can still download from places like thepiratebay but use a VPN (50kr a month) and give the finger to the anti piracy slobs and music/movie cartels.

Good hunting!
