Swede released after West Bank demo arrest

Published: 31 Mar 2012 09:11 GMT+02:00
Updated: 01 Apr 2012 08:20 GMT+02:00

The man remains suspected of having assaulted an Israeli police officer.

"I have been conditionally released and will be interrogated again on April 4th," the man said to the Dagens Nyheter daily.

The Swedish foreign ministry in Stockholm has been informed about the Schulz's case.

"We can confirm that we are aware that it is a case where a Swedish man in his twenties was arrested in connection with demonstrations yesterday (Friday) afternoon," said spokesperson Teo Zetterman.

The foreign ministry has been in contact with the 20-year-old's relatives who have confirmed that he is no longer in custody.

"We will have to follow this and see what happens," Zetterman said.

Philip Schulz was one of four Swedes acting within a larger group of foreign observers at a Palestinian rally entitled "March to Jerusalem", protesting against the acquisition of land by Israel in the West Bank.

When the demonstrators moved towards a road block they were met with rubber bullets and tear-gas by Israeli soldiers, according to a report by the AFP news agency.

The demonstrators then dispersed and fled into nearby streets, but later formed a human chain and re-grouped. The soldiers then proceeded to detain a number of people in the chain, according to the local Östran daily.

Israeli law allows for the authorities to detain suspects for up to 24 hours.

Foreign observers regularly participate in Palestinian protests and are considered by protesters to offer some safety.

Demonstrations are reported to have taken place at several locations across the West Bank on Friday and according to Reuters at least one person has been shot dead by Israeli forces, with a further 220 reported injuries.

The rally was named "March to Jerusalem" to protest Israel's "acquisition" of those lands.

Because we all know Jerusalem has NO Jewish history whatsoever. I mean there's no connection whatsoever between Israel and Jerusalem ... :s

Poor you "blursd" Jerusalem is the capital of the state of Israel even before your religion came to life "Jerusalem is the capital of the King David before your Mohamad was born,,,,,

My question is what the f is a "Swedish citizen" have to do in a conflict region....so it would be more acccurat if the reporter would say ....A Swedish passport holder wit Palestinian origine was arrested .......

No I don't relate this artical to a anti semitism but the fact is that the report and the publisher of this article continue the baist on the situation down in the region. Just for your information the so called "reporter.... Reuters" are 100% palestinians that are reporting one side of the real picture!! so go make your chooce and judge who is the terrorist and who is the agresor who is the underdog ......to be honest it is not important what ever is your opinion.....

Had a Swedish coworker (Swedish university educated) tell me the other day, that Jesus promised the Holy Land to the Palestinians. From my anecdotal experience, Swedes are generally not overtly anti-semetic. They tend to be painfully and ridiculously ignorant regarding Israel though.

I don't know what is the nationality of this person, but I can tell you that some people in the world do what they think is right to do for humanity, regardless of nationality or if there is any profit for them in it!

I don't know when this stupid discussion about who had this land 3000 years ago ends! Persian empire once conquered the area from India to Greece 3000 years ago. That doesn't give any privilege to Iranians. The FACT IS that NOW there are millions of humans like us with two hands and two feet who were forced out of their homes to live somewhere else and they have EVERY right to return to that place no matter where it is called and what name you prefer for that place!!
11:14 March 31, 2012 by blursd
@ Iraniboy ...

Firstly, Israel isn't claiming rights to areas under it's traditional control 3,000 years ago -- otherwise Lebanon would not exist. I think we can all agree Israel has no intention of, and have never made an attempt to occupy the entire country of Lebanon. Thusly, you analogy is inherently flawed. A more correct analogy would be someone arguing modern Iranians have no right or connection to ... let's say Tehran. The entire argument is, on it's head, the height of absurdity.

Then you didn't get what I meant. I mean talking about all these names and who own those names are just useless and in many cases inhuman! "My question is what the f is a "Swedish citizen" have to do in a conflict region"

Why is it a conflict zone?

Answer:

Because it is illegally occupied territory by Israel , who shoot anybody who dares to oppose their occupation.

Reuters report did not mention one person killed, when demonstrators in Gaza opened fire at the Israeli troops. Israeli soldeires returned the fire. One man was killed. At this time, nobody is able to say who this man was shot by.

It also does not mention the fact that there is, in Gaza an idealistic battle going on between Hamas and Islami Jhadi, which is an even more extreme group. It was the latter group who opened fire from within a civilian croed, as isd their usual practice. Even Swdish troops and others in the west complain of this tactic. It was actually Hamas that forced Islami Juihadi to stop as their clear intention was to starty a full scale battle.

To claim that supporters of Israel will claim the Local to be anti Semitic, is what is to be expected from people with a prpfoundly sub standard mentality tarnished with hate for Jews and Israel.

I have written before. To those who are keenly interested in "Real" facts, forget the news media and search out some of the Israeli sites. debka.com is an intelligence site, MEMRI is another that prints what is actually being reported in the Arab Muslim world and not whitewashed over in the media. You have a lot to explore.

By the way. What about between 900,000 to 1 million Jews had to leave lands that are dominated by Islam, where they and Christian (and others including Hindus, Sikhs, Druse, Kurds and other nonArabs were treated as 2nd class people, known as dhimmis)What about millions of other real refugees in Europe, Africe and Asia since WWII finished? Why no intrerest there about the Sudan and Tibet and others today? Just anger at Israel? Now that is Jew hatred. Now that is a fact.
13:08 March 31, 2012 by blursd
@ Iraniboy

It would also probably help if you wrote in coherent, intelligible English ... case in point (from your last post) , "I mean talking about all these names and who own those names are just useless and in many cases inhuman." That sentence doesn't make any sense ... at all. It's like you're typing this into a translation program and it's using some other language's syntax and grammar ... because that IS NOT coherent English syntax or grammar.

I understand English might not be your first language (in fact, I'm rather confident it isn't), but the way your form your sentences (and by extension your arguments) is structurally near impossible to understand. You leave out nouns, adjectives, don't follow primary or subordinate clause rules, and sometimes go off into completely unrelated non sequiturs ... that have no obvious connection that any part of the sentence (or paragraph).

If I missed a point it's because you didn't make it clearly (if at all) ... most of your premises aren't even formed in a logically sound fashion (leaving the argument of their individual validity completely aside). It's like trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing ...
13:24 March 31, 2012 by Iraniboy
@blursd

Sometimes you need to have extra intelligence and effort to understand a non-coherent comment which you have never heard before! But I don't blame you for that. As a mater of fact, even if you remove that sentence from my comment, the main point is still there! Another reason why you are unable to comprehend that is due to the fact that the idea is very much ignored in mainstream media. The issue I raised is just a pure ethical issue and I don't mind repeating it again.

A group of people who live at a place, no matter what it is called and what they are called should, has the right to do so regardless of this modern rubbish associations that we gain with the name of nationality!

@ Iraniboy

"Sometimes you need to have extra intelligence and effort to understand a non-coherent comment which you have never heard before!" That's just about THE stupidest thing I've ever heard. Basically what you're saying is "I don't have to present my ideas coherently or in any sort of logical fashion, and if you can't make sense of it then YOU'RE the idiot ... because I wrote it, and it makes sense to ME."

Here's a bold idea ... present ideas coherently. I'm pretty sure Einstein didn't publish his Theory of Relativity in gibberish and then say, "Well if you can't figure out what I meant to say from the nonsense I wrote, then you're just stupid!"

Excuse me that we won the war,by the way we offer a withdrown from these territories for a mutual recognition and a true peace .

I can draw a picture if you think it is very hard to understand that a group of people who have lived in an area for their entire life, should not be expelled for a cause that happened 3000 years ago. You think you can get way with it by picking on language but I encourage you to listen to that part of your brain which sets your ethical values if there is any!

its a dog-eat-dog world, overflowing with hypocrisy...

i honestly dont care much about happening out there (billioins of people oppressed and killed every day, dieing from hunger ect ect in the he 3rd world, from china to venezuela).

bottom line, whatever people think or not, im glad and proud to come (although live for now in sverige) from a country like israel, who takes care of its citizens in the face of an angry mob of thousands trying to march through its borders...

this has nothing to do with "occupation". its pure safety.

as far as i know, there is no country that would protect its people like israel, just for example: a traveler in columbia accused of starting a fire and was immediately had full help from the israeli embassy in all regards... israel even offered money and compensation. while sweden, with its citizens locked-up around in 3rd world countries (where they are not conveniently released after 24 hours laws) with no release date do nothing…

I do agree ,therefore on 29.11.47 resolution 181 of the UN called for partition of Palestine into 2 states a Jewish one and an Arab Palestinian one, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion called all the arabs and Palestinians to accept the partition resolution and to avoid any aggression but the arabs rejected that resolution and the recognition of the Jewish state and the the after they open a war against the new born Jewish state in order to eliminate it, followed repeated wars in 1967 and 1973 which aimed to reach the same goal but failed.

61-year-old Carl-Erik Cedvander who was beaten into a coma by a gang of seven young monsters, several of whom are repeat offenders. Be careful in Göteborg, some of the offenders are already free... :(

@ iraniboy

"I can draw a picture if you think it is very hard to understand that a group of people who have lived in an area for their entire life, should not be expelled for a cause that happened 3000 years ago."

Well, well, well. So you wanna draw a picture? Where should we start? Let's take a look at Rosengård in Malmö. It's been turned into a muslim ghetto where the violence is so bad ambulances need to be escorted by police. The govt is continuously introducing "programs" to encourage those living in the area to assimilate. Children living there refer to themselves as being from Rosengård and not Swedish. Now they're even talking about recruiting immigrant firefighters. No need to say anything else there.

Have you been to Rinkeby in Stockholm? Unfortunately, it gets called "Turkeby" for a reason. Have you seen how depressing Fittja is? Well, the Swedes that are left there are selling their houses as quick as wild fire. I wonder why.

Lets draw a general picture of around Europe. Muslims are known to buy houses in areas they like. They live up to their "peaceful" reputation and next thing you know, the native neighbours are selling and moving out. The obvious reason they move out makes it difficult for them to sell and are therefore forced to sell way below property values, which scares other natives off while making it very attractive for other muslim families. Before you know it, there are muslim enclaves being formed because of the refusal to assimilate. The habitants of these enclaves think it's totally okay to bring their problems and even their own problem solving formulas from home with them. Muggings, shootings, stabbings increase. Swedes can no longer buy Sur Strömning in their local supermarket and their children have no friends to play with on the weekends because muslim kids are only allowed to play with other muslim kids. Their sons are harrassed for dating muslim girls...do I NEED to go on?

Is there a reason why Swedes (and other natives around Europe) should not feel like they're being in a way expelled from areas they've lived in all their lives?? What other immigrating group takes over entire suburbs or regions? What other immigrating group has the aim of doing that?

Again and again you comment and try to turn the issue into a muslim one. Yeah, I'm commenting on your comment (which probably has little or nothing to do with the article) but you asked for it :) Hypocrit.

Yes I can draw those irrelevant pictures you mentioned too. Then I will also draw some pictures like from your non-Islamic values. Like in Austria there was a non-Muslim man was raping his daughter who was locked in a room for years. Or a racist US man who killed a woman for being Muslim Last week or the man who killed some children Afghanistan two weeks ago. Want more of your non-Islamic values?!

It is just enough for you to know that that 95% of Swedes do not feel whatsoever that they are being expelled and in fact they feel very good about the immigration. So your worries are not recognized in Sweden I'm afraid.

Back to the topic at hand. We have a non-Muslim Swede who was mistreated and jailed in Israel but of course those lovely blonde Swedes are recognized by posters here only if they support Israel! Sorry Radhus and other Xenophobes! Your ideas have no place among the majority of Swedes!

Re 29, People in Sweden (and Europe perhaps) may associate Islam with people who they believe look Arab or African, but the U.S. is a big country with diverse populations. No matter if someone looks to be of Middle-eastern or African (or any other) descent, you don't know if the person has been in the country for one day or their family has been in the U.S. for generations.

I think Swedes have a tendency to superimpose their way of thinking and judging upon the whole U.S., and it doesn't work. While race relations in the U.S. are complex and often hard, I think there's often a greater likelihood that a person is going to be judged by how they dress and/or how they speak and/or their interests/hobbies, more than just what geographic location their most prominent physical features are traditionally linked to.

From a U.S. perspective and from within a global perspective, Islam is a religion/philosophy. Aren't there large populations of Muslims in Asia?

…Amish men keep beards. Amish women dress very conservatively and maintain subservient roles. Most people in the U.S. don't want to live according to Amish philosophy and religious law, yet no one is called "racist" if they disagree with the Amish.

Some people are racist. Some people are sexist. But just because you disagree with someone who looks different than you, doesn't mean that you are racist or sexist. There's a tendency in Sweden to scream racist in order to silence discussion, and it is very, very wrong.
15:13 April 1, 2012 by bcterry
Some people are racist. Some people are sexist. But just because you disagree with someone who looks different than you, doesn't mean that you are racist or sexist. There's a tendency in Sweden to scream racist in order to silence discussion, and it is very, very wrong."

That muslim tendency, can be found anywhere, anytime you criticize their religion or self proclaimed "prophet", or challenge them with verifiable facts.

Along with racist, you will get islamophobe, xenophobe, hate monger, nazi, zionist shill etc, all the way up to physical violence, death threats, or even murder.
15:46 April 1, 2012 by Iraniboy
@bcterry

I don't understand how you concluded the hypocrisy bit! Criticizing Muslims is not racist! But having different rules for Arab race and Jewish race as you have in Israel is racism. Or killing a woman in the US for the way she looks like is racism and etc.

@libertarianism

"I think Swedes have a tendency to superimpose their way of thinking"

I don't think so. I live among them. They never do so. They are the first who easily and gladly accept a new way of thinking as an alternative. However they are the last persons who actually implement that alternative.

"But just because you disagree with someone who looks different than you, doesn't mean that you are racist or sexist."

If you disagree with someone who looks different than you it doesn't mean you're racist if you proceed to kill them like your fellow countryman in the US last week then it is racist.

"There's a tendency in Sweden to scream racist in order to silence discussion, and it is very, very wrong."

Maybe. That's a different matter and I guess one should live in Sweden to realize why. It is due to to their high standards. The same goes for their definition of rape for example.
16:25 April 1, 2012 by libertarianism
Re 33, Saying "kill them like your fellow countryman..." is passive aggressive. The U.S. is a large country with diverse populations, hence the ongoing culture war. Thousands of "my countrymen" are also conscientious objectors. I'm not a murderer or a conscientious objector.

I don't know what murder you're referring to. I'm sorry that someone did such a horrible thing. I'm sorry that you perceive me as a fellow of a murderer. Perhaps the crime was racially motivated. I don't know, but just because the victim and the murderer looked different from one another does NOT mean that the crime was racially motivated. The murderer will have to say this or it will have to be proven in court. It is not an automatic asuumption though.

I don't think Swedes scream racism bc of high standards. I believe it is a bullying technique to humilate and silence those they do not agree with. As far as I can tell there is little-to-no live-and-let-live in Sweden. Very often, Sweden seems like a society dominated by obsessive compulsive personality disorder. People are obsessed with controlling what every individual and every moment of their life. I find it extremely suffocating.

He should have been arrested taken to the airport and sent back to Sweden,we have enough problems here and we do not need to bring over such people from Sweden,by the way the law is the same for everybody here not important if you black blonde European or Asiatic origin once you attack the policemen or soldiers you are brought to trial, many Israelies from left or right wing find themselves in police station after such behaviour

Oil is a wealth that belongs to the world and must be manage by those who are capable of managing it for the benefit of all people of the world. The West (as in excluding Russia and China) would be much better stewards of this natural wealth.

As everyone knows and as everyone points out to him every time he trots out that that line, it is a logical fallacy that even a high school student could figure out. The election is not a referendum on SD. LOL - kinda funny even thinking about how desperate one must be to try and use that in debate.

In unrelated news, I'm saddened that TL did not print the story about the 61-year old man who was kicked into a coma by 5 or 6 Iraqi teens last week. I hope he's recovering well.

God, Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour! To which extent will this brave protector of fascist islamists, iraniboy, give his idiotic arguments? The same soup over and over again...

Oh, yeah iraniboy. The media in Sweden is scared of your "kompisar" to an extent that it continues to bang about "injustice" in the palestinian territories, while around them muslims are literally torturing and murdering THOUSANDS per month. The "good muslims" that bashed the door of some caricaturist in with axes made sure that journalists are scared. Your religion grows nothing, but dictatorships, torture, suffering of the weak and the most MASSIVE emigration in history.

This emigration brings such a burden on european economy, that social services are struggling beyond anything remembered previously. Your areas are so horrible, that even swedish insurance companies have a higher apartment insurance there, based on pure statistics of damage and criminality.

Every swede's nightmare is to have their children schools turn into "multicultural experience" and the moment the socialist government decided building cheap ghettos for your mates in religion (since apparently you are also the most unemployed society in Sweden per capita), people were escaping these areas like from plagued city.

What you CAN do, is to continue lying in media by adding smoke above cities, removing knives from "Freedom" vessels crew hands, posting a picture of a bloody child that is 20 years old, throwing old dead from morgues on the streets, arrange Pallywood in front of cameras, explaining murders, kidnappings and beatings of elderly and infant Jews by the actions of Israel etc.

You found a ONE woman killed by some rednecks in USA and compare it to the filled prisons in the entire europe by muslims.

The amount of racist attacks per capita committed by your co-ideologists is not even in the RANGE of christian population in the west. I am not even talking about Jews, who are afraid to be seen as such all over Europe because of YOUR Hitler inspired culture.

Swedish are indeed washed by a huge amount of lies and inventions, but give it a few years... They will come to senses. They just talk about it behind your back. Awfully quiet and respectful to you when your are around... No criticism whatsoever...

Re #42, have you seen the Vilks video? I think it's perfectly acceptable and legitimate to say that violence, screaming, and excited name-chanting make me (and many people) uncomfortable. There's a reason these experiences aren't gonna show up on a spa brochure. I don't think that acknowledging this as an unpleasant, unhealthy, stressful environment means that I am picking a fight.

Starting over (Around Sweden in a kayak) »

" I’ve now been off the water for almost 14 days. At first I was totally gutted being forced into a rest period, I had Stockholm in my sights and apart from the pain and discomfort in my shoulder, spirits were high and I was starting to gain some momentum. The news hit me fairly hard and..." READ »

Favorites of Swedish Summer 2014 (Stockholm in my American Heart) »

"In a boscage of brush and birch trees, sits an unobtrusive cabin on the sea. A small window faces the windward side of the feverish Baltic. It’s the size of a modern wardrobe, designed to fit a small desk and a limitless cavern of stories and characters that extend as far as the waves and skies..." READ »
