A 62-year-old man from Gothenburg, arrested on suspicion of extensive child pornography offences, has confessed to the charges. The man is suspected of being the main protagonist behind a huge international paedophile ring.

"Some parts he denies but my client  has confessed to most of the charges presented by the prosecutor," the man's lawyer Leif Almquist told the TT news agency.

The 62-year-old is suspected of being behind a huge international paedophile network and is thought to have run the server on which members of the network used to share child pornography. During a search of the 62-year-old's residence, eleven terabytes of images and movies were found in his computer.

"It is by far the largest seizure we have ever done," said prosecutor Stefan Lind to the local Götebrgs-Posten daily.

The investigation began in Germany just over a year ago and several people within the network have already been convicted of similar offences.

The 62-year-old was initially surprised by the arrest warrant even though he was aware that he figured prominently in the investigation. The man now hopes for a speedy judicial process.

"Because he has known that there has been an investigation and because he has for the most part acknowledged responsibility, he would prefer the prosecution to be processed. He would like to put this behind him," Almquist said.

In a separate case on Friday, a 47-year-old man was found to have over 875,000 images of child pornography in an apartment that he had access to in Gothenburg. Of the images, 22,000 are reported to be of a particularly serious nature.

Police furthermore found some 1,394 films, of which 273 contained particularly serious material. The films contain some 174 hours of material.

The man has now been indicted by Gothenburg District Court on suspicion of aggravated child pornography offences.
