Ikea has pulled two different types of elk-shaped pasta from its stores in Sweden.

The move follows worries that the products may contain soy, an ingredient that is not listed on the pasta packets.

The company has confirmed that its elk or moose-shaped pasta is affected, alongside its wholemeal elk pasta. Only products on sale in Sweden are thought to be affected.

Soy is an oil seed commonly found in prepackaged foods, Asian-style dishes, tofu and soya milk. Some scientists have suggested links between some types of soy and breast cancer, a reduced sperm count and risks for pregnant women. But most doctors argue that foods containing soy are very safe to eat and provide numerous health benefits including helping to lower cholesterol.

“Safety is of highest priority for Ikea and as precautionary we’re recalling Pastaälgar Fullkorn, elk-shaped wholegrain pasta and pastaälgar elk-shaped pasta, since it may contain soy which is not declared on the product label," said the company in a statement.

Those who have bought Ikea's elk pasta products, which are popular among children, can return the items to any Ikea store regardless of when they bought it, according to the press release from the furniture giant.

Last year, Ikea stopped sales of its Swedish meatballs in at least 15 countries after reports that Czech inspectors had discovered horsemeat in some batches of the product.
