The Local's resident music guru Paul Connolly is back with a bumper selection of his favourite Swedish tracks to keep you smiling this November.
1. Taylor Swift - Shake It Off Yep, the biggest song of the autumn was made in Sweden. Shake It Off was co-written and produced by Max Martin and his Stockholm protege Shellback (Johan Schuster). Pure pop gold with a hint of Outkast and The Beatles.
2. John Moose - Flower John Moose’s verdant, melancholy mix of America’s The Horse With No Name and chugging Krautrock could pretty much be the anti-Taylor Swift. It’s beautiful too. 3. Tove Styrke - Borderline Tove Styrke has long left the mediocrity of Swedish Idol behind (she finished third in 2009). Borderline is sumptuous and plump pop of the very highest quality. It’s also slightly odd. Which is, of course, admirable. 4. Urban Cone - Sadness Disease French electro smoothies Phoenix have left big paw prints on Stockholm band Urban Cone. But the Swedes have added a hopeful shimmer of effervescence to Phoenix’s lingering sadness on this terrific single.
5. Cajsa Siik - Higher Slinky, sensual and lovely, Higher is from Siik’s new album, Contra. 6. Snoh Aalegra - Bad Things Snoh Aalegra is part of the tsunami of brilliant electro-soul artists pouring out of Sweden. Bad Things is funky, robust and deeply melodic. 7. Vinsten - Luckiest Girl This male duo are finally properly re-releasing one of the sweetest and most underrated songs of 2012.
