Umeå, in northern Sweden, has been the European Capital of Culture all year, and the city is planning to end the year with a bang. On Saturday it will play host to the Northern Light spectacle, where organizers have promised a colourful show with light projections across the city.

There'll also be live music from Swedish artists from all over the country, including Seinabo Sey, INVSN, Caotico, Maxida and Mimie Märak, Kitok, Katarina Barruk and Svante Henryson and others.

Next year, Mons in Belgium and Plzen in the Czech Republic will be Europe's next official cultural capitals  - and Umeå will be passing the baton this weekend.

Prefer your entertainment in a bigger city? Never fear, there's plenty going on Stockholm too. The Sprit Museum is hosting an usual event about Swedish sin. Through the eyes of artist Peter Johansson, you can check out an exhibition of images dealing with "lust, vice, liberation, and shame".

But we know for many of you a Christmas market will be on the agenda in the coming days. In the centre of Stockholm, the traditional Gamla Stan market in the Old Town is an absolute must at this time of year. You can find sweets and treats, all kinds of Swedish meats, and handcrafts galore. It opens each day at 11am and runs until 6pm in Stortorget. Be quick though, it's only open until the 23rd.

Elserwhere, in Gothenburg on the west coast, the country's biggest Christmas market at Liseberg is also heating up. Fill up your glögg mug and head along to the Liseberg amusement park before the end of the year.

And it's not just in the big cities that you can find the Christmas markets - they're popping up everywhere. Check out our guide to some of the more secret spots to do your festive shopping.
