The man, who is 45-years-old and a director of a successful IT company, was sent for psychiatric evaluation on Saturday. He denies the charges, which include aggravated assault on the girl's mother, as well as assault and attempt of assault of a man and a woman in their twenties.

Emergency services were called to a house in Bålsta at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon, where they found the little girl, who was seriously injured.

She was taken to Uppsala University Hospital but doctors were unable to save her.

Her mother was also taken to the hospital where police said she remained on Friday morning. Few details have been released about her condition but she is understood to be conscious.

According to the TT newswire, another two people were in the house at the time of the attack and were threatened by the killer, but were left unhurt.

The girl's father -- who is understood to be married to her mother -- was swiftly arrested but was described as being "in shock" after the incident and could not be interrogated until Friday afternoon.

"He denies any crime. But I don't want to talk about what he has said," prosecutor Liselott Herschend told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet on Friday afternoon.

Earlier in the day she confirmed that the man had sought psychological help shortly before the incident but would not offer any other details.

Bålsta is a quiet town in Uppsala County, north east of Stockholm, situated near Lake Malaren (Mälaren). It has just over 14,000 residents.

Flowers have been left outside the family’s home.
