Sweden’s centre-right opposition Alliance parties have lamented the results of the UK referendum on EU membership but said that Sweden’s future is within the community, nipping in the bud any talk of a similar Swedish referendum

Anna Kinberg Batra, of the largest opposition party, the Moderates, told Swedish news agency TT, “This is a sad day for the British and for Europe. Nothing like this has ever happened in the EU and it is hard to get an overall picture of what the consequences will be."

Kinberg Batra emphasized that without the UK, Sweden now has to strengthen its cooperation with other countries that have the same strong interest in free trade.

Stefan Löfven, the Swedish prime minister will meet his centre-right Alliance rivals on Monday, in order to discuss the situation before he attends the next EU summit.

Centre Party leader Annie Lööf called the referendum result a "nightmare."

“It leaves the EU weakened and means Sweden is losing an ally in trade issues.”

Ebba Busch Thor of the Christian Democrats, said, “It’s very sad that the EU loses the UK, and Sweden loses an ally.”

Britons voted 52 percent to 48 percent to quit the bloc, a margin of more than one million votes, according to final results from Thursday's referendum.
