Size isn't everything, and Houzz.se's editor in chief Sara Norrman proves it with this looks at nine brilliant uses of compact Scandinavian houses.

We Scandinavians love our compact hobby houses. Norwegian cabins, Swedish cottages and Danish gazebos cane be found on the mountains, along the coasts and in our gardens. It's where we gather friends for dinners, coffee or perhaps even spend the night, preferably during the summer, when we love to trade large villas and apartments to a private nook somewhere.

With that in mind, we pay tribute to our love for our garden houses below. Who knows what you'll find

Become one with nature

Interacting with nature without disturbing noise and light can help us discover some real spiritual depth. Would you dare to turn off the phone and listen to nothing but yourself, the waves and birdsongs for a few days? This summerhouse from Sommarnöjen even has a rooftop to meditate on.

Live like a settler

Make life as easy as it can be in an Eremitens Koja from Arvesund. Do you really need all the stuff you surround yourself with these days? When you only own the bare necessities, you realize how much time you actually have, and discover new things in life.

Get into the water
Whatever the thermometer may say, the only thing you need to do is take the first step – it will feel good afterwards! In this particular house there is a 10 square meter sauna, but why not have a cabin with beds too, so you don't need to get dressed before your morning dip?

Sleep like a baby
Lying in bed for hours shouldn't be reserved for teenagers. For adults, this compact house is private, and invites long walks at night.

Let it float
Even though the brothers Thom, Jimmy and Nils Sandell really like to spend the summers with their parents in their summer house on Muskö, they wanted something a little more private. Who doesn't? Just don't forget to bring a boat.

Have an outdoor shower
Having a shower outside, while being surrounded by greenery, feels quite different from being within the four walls of a bathroom. In this case, the owner hauled hot water from inside the bathroom, but you can also simply use a garden hose with cold water. To make it super simple, a watering jug will do as well!

Discover your artistic side
Do you dream of colouring with watercolours or writing a novel? Creating a studio or writer's cot will make it harder to justify excuses and gives you a place to store brushes and paper.

Keep your gnomes in the loft
Or maybe just guests... or children. It's a special feeling climbing up into a loft before going to bed, and one that makes you feel free and happy. Just make sure there is a lamp to turn on if you have to climb down in the middle of the night.

Cook outdoors
Food eaten outdoors always taste better, so imagine how good it must taste if that food is cooked outside. Just be sure to clean up the crumbs and debris when you have finished, so that you don't get animal visitors over night.
