A man from Dalarna in central Sweden has fined for attacking a man who had stolen his boat and then tried to sell it on the internet.

The victim of the alleged boat theft noticed his stolen boat for sale on the popular buy-and-sell website Blocket.se, and decided to pay the seller a visit, Sveriges Radio (SR) reports.

Accompanied with five friends, the man got into a heated discussion with the suspected boat thief, proceeding to hit the seller in the face.

The original owner and his friends then left with the boat, as well as another boat with the original boat's motor.

The prosecutor didn't believe that the boat really belonged to the man and charged the six men with robbery.

But the Värmland district court was of another opinion and found the man and his five companions guilty of taking the law into their own hands (egenmäktigt förfarande).

The original boat owner was also found guilty of assault and all six were sentenced to community service.

The boat seller is set to receive damages of 20,000 kronor ($2,500), but the boat will remain in the possession of the original owner.

The court did not find that the seller purchased it in good faith.

I am glad the man got his boat back.

The man who had the boat, deserved a good punch in the mouth.

The seller should have been charged with handling stolen goods and imprisoned. He should also have been paying the original owner the fine, not the other way around.

The law in that context in Sweden should be challenged.

I am glad to see a Swede standing up for himself against a criminal. Hopefully more will do so.
11:23 June 19, 2009 by jack sprat
The report is a touch confusing.

However it appears that the guy whose boat was stolen has been fined and in addition along with his pals punished.

The thieving toe-rag who stole the boat is given a nice little present of 20,000 kroner.

The robber failed to get away with the original crime and gets compensated by the Court for his trouble.

A win/win situation for the burglar.

A lose/lose situation for the honest man.

Justice?......What Justice?

Who says crime doesn't pay?
11:32 June 19, 2009 by Puffin
Although you can feel for the guy who lost his boat - perhaps taking along 5 mates to beat the cr*p out of the thief was not the best way to go about retrieval. I think it went beyond the legal definition of 'reasonable' force.
14:01 June 19, 2009 by kaze
Wow, the Swedish legal system is silly.
14:17 June 19, 2009 by Miss Kitten
Hardly surprising considering this is the country where you could be sued by a burgler if he slipped on ice while attempting to break into your house.
14:34 June 19, 2009 by jack sprat
Shall have to remember to salt the ice for him next time.

Also maybe leave him a glass of brandy and a piece of cake.

Not to forget to leave the heating on,................I want to be sure he's comfortable whilst ransacking my house and I dont want to get sued if he catches a chill.

I trust that these measures will meet with the approval of the Swedish legal system.
14:53 June 19, 2009 by justanotherexpat
So no conviction for the original theft? Insane!

20,000:- for a smack in the face when in other cases rapists' victims get nothing? Mad!

I really hope I never end up in a situation where I have to rely on the Swedish 'justice' system..........
15:18 June 19, 2009 by Jamtjim
Ah, but be careful with that one. If your burgler happens to be under 18 you could get in trouble for suppling alcohol to a minor.

And if the cake happened to contain nuts....
15:35 June 19, 2009 by jack sprat
Ah, I didnt say what was in the cake, but when the cops come across the body I shall just say I left it there to kill a Big Rat which has been bothering me lately.

Just recently a rapist was given 8 years and next day a crew of drug smugglers were given 12 years, unbelievable. A couple down and out junkies get more time for dope smuggling than a guy who is raping under-age girls....Swedish criminal justice system is about as insane as their attitude towards immigrants. Ut just seems to continue the contempory Swedish theme of national suicide. A far far cry from the day of the feared and greatly respected Viking Warriors. Oh Sweden where hast thee gone ??

Disappearing down the plughole me fears Jimmy.

Anyway wheres your mate Eli today?
10:22 June 20, 2009 by longtime
If the 12 year sentence you are refering to is the one is this story. then it was heroin not weed.

Re this boat story the mark of a civilised society is not acting as your own judge and jury and taking the law into your own hands.

Re this boat story the mark of a civilised society is not acting as your own judge and jury and taking the law into your own hands.[/quote]Quite agree.

Better to let the Swedish legal system deal with it, by rewarding criminals for their efforts.

Also be sure to continue punishing any honest ppl. who try to interfere with the criminals rights to go out thieving.

I mean we wouldn't want to do anything that might discourage them from continuing with their chosen "occupation" now would we?
13:32 June 20, 2009 by means1
I think the boat owner should have reported to the police instead of going to attack the thief. Thats why hes being punished for taking the law into his own hands. I think it was the same in OJ Simpsons' last case.
13:59 June 20, 2009 by svenskdod
It just goes to show that common sense is not a prerequisite when applying for a job as a Lawyer or Judge.

The man will probably have to sell his boat to pay for the 20000:- damages, do you think he will get to use the advertisement that the thief has out on blocket?

Rapists, murders and thieves... people who chose not to live by the basic ideals that normal people live by, instead they get treated like royalty and get less time in prison than someone who forgets to pay their taxes....

WHERE IS THE SYMMETRY?
14:26 June 20, 2009 by jack sprat
You seem to forget that OJ walked away laughing from the Police Criminal Proceedings.

It was the ppl. who brought the civil case that caught up with him.

Would be a better thing to do here in view of how useless and dumb the police are,...(see todays piggy story),...however unlike the States, compensation levels to honest ppl., probably wouldn't justify it
14:51 June 20, 2009 by Mib
The guy who was fined 20000 sek is an idiot. He should have just gone to the police or alternatively taught the guy a lesson in a dark alleyway late at night. What do you expect when you go with 5 guys to claim your boat back using violence? It doesn't then take a detective to find and charge you.

Clever people use their brains and take a breath before making a decision. Not acting like a chav with a hoody!
16:01 June 20, 2009 by longtime
When you read the original article you will see that the bloke and his friends not only recovered his boat but stole another one. So frankly they both sound as criminal as each other. I stand by my statement that you don't just take things into your own hand, at least try the proper channels.
17:56 June 20, 2009 by jack sprat
""at least go through the proper channels""......

.....in which case he would likely never have seen his boat again, as the local plods are the most pathetic on the planet.

As it was, the prosecutor still disputed the ownership of the boat and with regard to boat No.2, it was taken away to retrieve the engine, also stolen, and could have been returned later.

As it was the honest guy got a heavy fine for smacking the thieving twit in the mush.

Pity he didnt get his moneys worth and break a few limbs.

Maybe the robbing basket would at least have been delayed in getting to his next victim.

Little wonder Swedens going to Hell in a Handbag when ppl.are more concerned about pussyfooting around with criminals, than with Justice and Fair Play for the victims.

Certain parts of the Middle East maybe have the right idea for dealing with such crimes.
20:14 June 20, 2009 by longtime
Yes he got his own boat back and also stole another, so he is a crook as well Go defend someone worth defending, he broke the law, he deserves punishment just as the original thief did, you can't have it both ways. Did he even try to report the fact that he had located his stolen property? If he did I would have thought the story would have said so, but no, he is a big as thug as the other guy. I pity you if you think this man is worth being held up a some sort of hero. No wonder you think things are going to hell if this is the sort of person worth having as an example.
20:40 June 20, 2009 by jack sprat
Maybe if the guy had any faith or trust in a positive police response he would have taken that route.

However it appears that confidence and respect for the Swedish police and legal system in general are at an all time low.

This case is just one more example.

The failure of the Swedish police to carry out their responsibilities and react positively and correctly to crime, has been highlighted many times on quite a number of threads.

It is therefore absolutely no surprise at all to see victims of crime increasingly taking the law into their own hands and acting as they see fit to try and get at least some form justice.

Two wrongs dont make a right and until the authorities put their house in order and begin protecting the honest and innocent there ia little doubt that such incidents as this will continue to spiral.
00:15 June 21, 2009 by longtime
So lobby those in power that provide funding for the police to give them the resources to do their job properly. The police themselves are just as frustrated at not being able to do their jobs properly.
00:49 June 21, 2009 by jack sprat
Obviously you do not have a clue.

If you check some of the old threads you might begin to.

One example,...Its fairly normal practice for them not to attend, or refuse to attend the scene of most crimes such as burglary even when the crimes are in progress.

Usual excuse is nobody available.

I have called in at the cop shop on several occasions over the last few years and on each and every occasion there have been a group of them just sitting there doing sweet fanny adams, apart from eating their takeaways, chatting about their holidays or getting friendly with some stray dog thats wandered in.

Many of them are getting on a bit, just playing it safe and passing away the time.

The truth is they dont want to know, they dont want to be involved, they just want to be left in peace until its time to draw their pensions.

Difficult to attract any intelligent young ones as they have more sense, realizing that they will just be ridiculed and looked on as no more than a sick joke.

So all you have left is a bunch of semi retired old timers and a few younger meatheads who are probably too dumb to even find their own way home after dark.

Police...What Police????
10:26 June 21, 2009 by longtime
I know because I do know some swedish police officers as personal friends. You have very little idea of the pressures and contraints they operate under. Your's is a typical anti-police stance. Seems they are on no ones side but no one will pay to give them the resources they need or they powers they could use. But then if they had all the powers they would like you'd be living in a totalitarian state. It's apolitcal issue so take it up with the politicians and stop complaining about the men and women who put their lives at risk for your safety and have a go at the cozy politicians.
11:00 June 21, 2009 by NND
what a joke...

just goes to show what a mockery the legal system is in Sweden. In most other countries the robber would have been too scared to go to the police incase the charged him with stealing the boat.

The good guy gets fined, but it seems even if he had gone to the police nothing would have happened... So at least he gets some satisfaction knowing that the guy was waking up with a sore face the next day!
12:40 June 21, 2009 by jack sprat
Under pressure police I have yet to see.

They are the most laid back, couldnt care less,do-nothing bunch of individuals I have ever come across.

They appear to do everything possible to avoid any form of confrontation and tricky situations ,as is the norm here.

As numerous requests come in for assistance they are content to ignore them and relax in their office.

A great way to keep crime figures down....many ppl.simply dont bother reporting crimes now,....there is little point in doing so.

Even if they were given additional powers, I very much doubt if they would put them to any use.

Seems the only qualification needed is the ability to write out traffic violation tickets,...oh yes and to get the right order from the fast food joints.

Only when someone gets between them and their jam tarts are they likely to get upset and take action....but thats another story from a previous thread.
15:38 June 21, 2009 by Good Dog!
Believe it or not, possession is the greater part of ownership in Sweden. I found out who stole my bicycle - some years ago - and when I went to the police they told me rather than to file a report to simply "steal it back"!
17:48 June 21, 2009 by jack sprat
Ha,Ha,....Typical....What the police will do to avoid work and avoid increasing their crime statistics.

Sometimes wonder just how much crime goes either unreported or unrecorded here.

It must surely be by far and away the highest percentage in Europe.

Its all good news and a great incentive for the thieves.

Some of the East Europeans must think they've died and gone to heaven!

What say you Longtime?

Certainly is Mz.

Great to sit back in the country chill-out and have a good laugh at the crazy news stories on a holiday weekend, while some poor soles are getting all frustrated in the usual traffic chaos.

A farmer around here caught a guy driving off his farm - in the farmer's car! He chased, forced him into the ditch - should have let well enough alone at thie point - but instead he puts a load of birdshot in the thief's leg! Charged with assault causing bodily harm rather than attempted murder...Lucky man!
09:30 June 22, 2009 by jack sprat
Would have thought if you wanted to murder someone it would be better to shoot them in the head or heart rather than the leg.

Maybe the thief was the lucky one.
17:02 June 22, 2009 by Good Dog!
Actually, you are probably right although he told me that even a phoney "bill of sale" was good enough to keep the new possessor out of reach of the law.

So do I.

I doubt that.

Oh, they do! Our neighbours to the north-east have enjoyed "easy pickings" for ages and now its the south-east who are in on the game. "You may as well go to Poland, your car is already there! "
