Swedish cops dump toilets to save money

The Malmö police department will stop at no lengths to refrain from spending a penny, employees learned recently.

At first, staff thought they were getting a bum deal when two toilets near the surveillance unit’s offices were closed last week, the Sydsvenskan newspaper reports.

But when employees from the narcotics and criminal divisions also found themselves locked out of the bathrooms in their wings, employees began to suspect the closures were no accident.

As it turned out, officials at the department had decided to shut down several of the station’s toilets over the summer in an effort to keep from draining the public purse.

But someone forgot to tell workers at the police station, prompting the station’s workplace safety officer to lodge a complaint, at which point the toilets were once again opened for business.

“It didn't quite go right. The toilets were closed too early,” Anita Elf, head of the station’s maintenance divison , told Sydsvenskan.

But Elf emphasized that the toilets would be closed during the summer, primarily on floors expected to be virtually devoid of employees over the summer holiday season.

Fewer toilets mean less cleaning, according to Elf, although the exact savings haven't been calculated.

Or hey, how about charging criminals when they are arrested? Everyone knows the Swedish prison system is like a visit to a resort, but if criminals know they will have to pay when they get arrested, they may think twice instead of walking out of jail and doing it again.

Just a thought. What do you think?

that is just crap... wait.... drink less coffee (which is free for the police) and eat less donuts... Oh, better yet, solve a few more crimes and then you wont need to use the toilet at the station.

this is so crappy!

Apparently the story is a hoax and the police are investigating the source.

A spokesperson, when questioned on any further developments, said that they had "nothing to go on".

By the number of cops to be seen on the job I was thinking they must all be locked in the bog rather than out.

Don't think they've ever been able to be more than 5 minutes away from the loo since they tasted their first of vindaloo.

Next thing is they,ll all be wanting a portapotty each to tow along behind their cop cars.

Come on Ryanair! Here's a business opportunity. Charge people to take a P and charge them based on quantity dumped. I can see it now...someone dials the emergency services, PC Eriksson is desperate to go to the toilet, so the response time increases leading to the criminal getting away with the act.

Or you see a police officer running down the street and you think aaah, they're after a criminal, but all they're doing is running to the nearest public toilet or cafe to brandish their warrant card to forcefully use the toilet.

you know that they're seriously considering this, right?
22:25 June 23, 2009 by Mib
Precisely why I said it.

oops. sarcasm/irony/humor missed, sorry.

This strikes me as somewhat bogus. Isn't there some variation of Occupation Health and Safety/zoning that would mandate x-many toilets based on the population of the office?
