The Swedish foreign ministry summoned Rasoul Eslami, Iran's ambassador to Sweden, to a meeting on Tuesday regarding Sweden's "serious concerns" about the ongoing violence and restrictions on free speech in the middle eastern state.

State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Frank Belfrage received Eslami at the foreign ministry. Belfrage "expressed our serious concerns" about the latest developments in Iran, foreign ministry spokeswoman Cecilia Julin told AFP.

The half-hour meeting was aimed at conveying the Swedish message and not to demand an explanation from the diplomat, she said.

Sweden will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union on July 1 and Belfrage therefore reiterated the EU's criticism expressed on Monday.

He condemned the violence that has surged since Iran's June 12 disputed election and the restrictions imposed on foreign journalists, and stressed the need to shed light on the result of the vote, Julin said.

Belfrage also rejected Iran's claims of international sabotage of the election.

The Iranian opposition has been staging almost daily rallies to protest against alleged fraud and widespread irregularities in the election, which returned hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Iranian state media said that at least 17 people have been killed and many more wounded in the unrest that has convulsed the nation for 11 days.

The protests are the biggest popular upheaval in Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution.

Although this is not going to stop the violence overnight, I do hope that the ambassador reports this conversation to the foreign ministry in Tehran. I know that the Iranian ambassador to Sweden is not the only one being "talked to" about the situation. It is my hope that the Government of Iran knows that despite their feudal attempts, the whole world is watching what is taking place.

Iran authorities must laugh their head off........
16:23 June 23, 2009 by hpunlimited
Iran is not scared of USA with the worlds largest nuclear arsenal, why would then Sweden scare them? The president Ajastrfdgdgre"I am a nutjob", is probably laughing his ass off while enjoying a martini and a cigarr in Teheran right now. Iran doesn't care what the world thinks, they have oil.
16:49 June 23, 2009 by Omaro
Either AhmadyNajad is very stupid or he is already with the USA unofficially, because nobody dare to stand against the USA. that is a fact.
16:54 June 23, 2009 by hpunlimited
Iran has a WMD, weapon of mass destruction more powerful than nuclear, OIL. It would kill the USA if they ever used it. If Iran stopped selling oil to europe or the USA right now in this economic crises, it would be the end of days. So Iran can do whatever it wants.
18:04 June 23, 2009 by Greg in Canada
If Iran stopped selling oil to the west then other oil rich nations would step in and sell theirs. An oil boycott by Iran would hurt Iran far more than anybody else.

Besides, if the USA really wanted Iran's oil all they would have to do is step in and take it. Let Iran shake their sabres and talk tough rhetoric about holy wars against the west. If they were ever stupid enough to go to war with the USA, Iran would be totally destroyed.

Calling in Iran's ambassador is just another example of Sweden trying to act important on the world stage. It's not going to make a single bit of difference.

crazy ass muslims. i guess there will be another infulx of refugees. great. i think a oil boycott would be great but it would never work China or russia will buy. esp. China.

strange! racist people usually gather and drink alcohol and listen to pop music someehere and blame others for thier failure in school or in life, BUT now i discovered that they have internet access,:).i really wish that i can help those people to find a better way in thier life, other than hating and blaming others.

Iran don't even listen to their own people!

The US could step in and take Iran's oil and at the same time would suffer far reaching consequences that would make Iraq seem like a playground squabble. So, stop the BS. Thankfully, the US seems to have someone with intelligence and no cowboy hat, so that option is probably a no-go. That is why he is focusing policy on reducing their dependence on oil, so in the distant future, they can't be threatened by such acts of withdrawing oil etc.

Sweden have to be seen doing what any normal country would do. But, nothing will change until a new President is in place that was duly voted by the people and the religious idiots have their powers removed. So, don't hold your breath.
21:28 June 23, 2009 by spy
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad probably has less of an idea of where Sweden is than 'middle America' and I strongly suspect he couldn't give a rat's arse what the Swedish government thinks.

But Sweden was right to send a message to Iran's leadership.

You know that this will only happen the day these people die or they kill them!! And most importantly, the majority of Iranians from the bottom of their hearts do want to build a different democracy where religious power has no place. So, it is far more complex and I think I am not going to live enough time in this world to see it, unfortunately.

While I am very concerned for the people in Iran and do not want to make light of their situation, I cannot help but laugh at this report. He was summoned was he? Summoned? Like a naughty boy? Was the ambassador given a jolly good spanking too?
00:43 June 24, 2009 by dtes
i think someone needs to nuke them AND isreal, the WHOLE middle east right off the map, and africa too, i am so sick of their trash of a culture and retarded politics and religion, and then deport every last one of em out of the west off to an island and burn it with napalm, that would take care of the problem, then we could go to war against the nationalists and religious wackos of our own and evolve this world into a happy civilized TV FREE atheist paradise.
01:05 June 24, 2009 by Princess P
Sounds like a very happy and civilised solution.

And what should we do about crazies like you?
01:23 June 24, 2009 by Muttlestar Galactica
Them and the gays.

They should all be put on to an island somewhere sunny, duty free where children are banned and has a liberal attitude to the nicer drugs and sci-fi geeks.

Why don't the people and the governments in so-called Islamic countries read "The Holy Koran", a marvellous book of guidance, to understand what they are doing wrong?

Really? Sweden is to step in to the EU presidency in July.

"Sweden is to step in to the EU presidency in July."

And??

The current Iranian dictatorship portrays the west as the "great Satan" to a large degree, By stirring up anti-west fervor among the Iranian people is how they will hang on to power.. They won't tolerate the EU meddling in their political affairs any more than they do with the USA. Individual EU countries can summon as many Iranian ambassadors as they like, but it won't make a lot of difference. In fact it may even backfire and alienate the |ranian government even more to a hardline position.

Summoning an ambassador is a common diplomatic occurrence and in diplomatic terms is quite serious.

Iran ceasing exporting oil to the US would have little effect, other than to drive up the US oil prices. See, the US has Canada as a northern neighbour and Canada is a net exporter of petroleum products. Canada is just very quiet about it and the last time it went to war with the USA... get this... Canada won. The USA is not going to invade Canukland for oil.

Back on topic... any country that values civil liberties and the democratic process should have summoned in the Iranian representative to their country and done as Sweden did. Diplomatically, this was a solid action.

Probably all be out on the streets with mass scenes of Jubilation and Celebration and a National Holiday thrown in for good measure!
