Scepticism and outrage follow Pirate Bay sale

A storm of criticism has been directed at the three main personalities behind The Pirate Bay following news that the file sharing site will be sold.

On the Pirate Bay’s own blog, spokesperson Peter Sunde has tried to explain to users the reasoning behind the decision to sell the site to Global Gaming Factory X (GGF), a software and internet café networking company

GGF plans to convert The Pirate Bay into a paying site using new technology and a new business model.

While several of the posts on the Pirate Bay blog express understanding for the decision, many other posters appear to be upset by the sale, with a few displaying outright anger.

Many think that Sunde, Gottfrid Swartholm Warg, and Fredrik Neij ought to be ashamed of themselves.

“Where have your ideals gone now, my friends? Ha, I can’t understand why I supported you guys,” writes one disgruntled file sharer.

“This is a sad day for internet, pirates and freedom. Commercial control can't lead to anything good,” writes another.

Sunde isn’t unaffected by the criticism. On his Twitter account he writes he nearly cried when we saw how many people failed to understand the reasons behind the Pirates’ decision.

“People hate me now for wanting to pause the 6 year free work we've been doing. Feels unfair,” wrote Sunde.

While Svartholm Warg isn’t currently in Sweden, he has said that the head of the Swedish chapter of IFPI -- the organization representing copyright holders which was a party to the lawsuit against the men behind The Pirate Bay -- claims that the 30 million kronor ($3.9 million) damages claim which accompanied the guilty verdict delivered in the case will haunt the men for the rest of their lives.

During an internet chat, Svartholm Warg celebrated the fact that the sale of the Pirate Bay gives the pirates access to funds which can be used to fight anti-piracy advocates.

“Do you think the anti-pirate Mafia’s capacity to screw with us will increase when we have a huge fund to screw with them?” asked Svartholm Warg.

According to Patrik Fältström, an IT-expert with Cisco and member of the Swedish government’s technology council, 60 million kronor for The Pirate Bay and 100 million kronor for Peerialism, which was also purchased by GGF, is not that much money.

He’s not surprised that Global Gaming Factory's CEO says the company has venture capitalists who are ready to meet when the deal is completed.

“It’s no coincidence that someone is ready to put some money into this,” Fältström told TT.

The second-generation file sharing technology developed by Peerialism is the future of file sharing, according to Fältström.

One of the revenue sources which GGF hopes to rely on are internet service providers (ISP).

But Jon Karlung, CEO for Bahnhof – an ISP which carries about 10 percent of Sweden’s internet traffic – is sceptical of GGF’s business model, which would require ISPs to pay.

“They can forget that. No ISP is going to join up and pay. He’s gone off the deep end; the reasoning is totally backward and it’s not going to happen,” Karlung told TT.

But at the same time, Karlung is supportive of GGF’s attempts to push new thinking and test new business models that no one else has tried, emphasizing he is in no way opposed to the new service.

oh well. here we are, the pirate bay people behaving like proper politicians. now that they are in the parliament, after setting up a fake political party, they sell out their company for a few millions. how nice! and then they wanted fans and other people to support them thru their trial. how embarrasing. they really showed us who they really are. they showed us who we (unfortunately) we voted for.

"According to Patrik Fältström, an IT-expert with Cisco and member of the Swedish government's technology council, 60 million kronor for The Pirate Bay..is not that much money" Not that much money? Relative to what? Where will the Return on Investment come from? Who will the customers be? What will they buy? Certainly, there are no real answers in GGF's "business plan." This is political, period. It was rushed through in time for Sweden's EU stewardship and the new US Ambasador's posting.

I understand TPB founders wanting to get rid of their liabilities. The problem lies with their wanting to dress this up as some sort of victory for the masses and TPB supporters. They no longer seem capable of separating reality from fiction.

They'll never see a single penny of the money from this deal. Also, talk of them starting another PB or foundation is nonsense,. Part of the deal was an internationally binding agreement to not enage in anything similar. They have been conned.

diegoveggie get your facts straight before you burp up ignorance.

The piratebay and PiratPartiet totally different.

Peter Sunde belongs to green party and

Piratpartiet actually wants to do Swedish People some Justice.

The Pirate Bays ship has been sinking since april so great time for them to Sell. And Really dumb time for anyone to buy Real Pirates will just jump ship(demonoid) btjunkie torrentportal and so on and so on good luck GGF as many failures have tried your buisness plan and not succeded..

It didn't work for Napster and it won't work for the Pirate Bay. It's true that TPB is one of the most popular torrent trackers on the internet, but people use it only because it's convenient and they're used to it. GGF has grossly overestimated the popularity of TPB and the loyalty of its users. If it becomes even a little bit inconvenient to use then they'll be gone in a heart beat. Changing the business model will mean the end of TPB.

"Insider Trading Suspected Ahead of Pirate Bay Sale"

gosh, between the green party and the pirate party i'm already getting a headache. and as far as the pirate bay sell.. well.. good for them to make a couple of millions.
20:40 July 2, 2009 by Jan M
No surprise. Basically the organisers of the Pirate Bay were a bunch of kids with some good computing expertise they probably acquired as bored teenagers and exploited to maker some waves. They made some waves then got into legal bother and now they're running away because someone's come in with some cash. The only surprise is that Swedish society ever looked upon those people as 'heroes' or 'defenders of freedom'. The facts are much more mundane and the statement from one of them shows that unfortunately they still haven't grown up ("Do you think the anti-pirate Mafia's capacity to screw with us will increase when we have a huge fund to screw with them?" asked Svartholm Warg). They would well advised to take the money and run because cash or no cash they have no chance of beating anybody in a courtroom battle.

When the going gets tough, the weak sell The Pirate Bay

I donated to the site, I went to the rallies.

I fought among many for a cause I believe in

Where are our fearless leaders now?

Peter, Fredrik, Gottfrid & Carl, you may have won the battle, but we've lost the war!

Who appointed you leaders anyway, did we the faithful users, party members ? ..no

You took it upon yourselves!

So take your 60 mil and run along!

I hope you get found guilty so you have time to think about the war you couldn't finish!

I'm reading a book at the moment called "Sista kulan sparar jag åt grannen". Its about life in war torn Bosnia. This was a real war in which people were maimed and killed i.e. it wasn't a petty dispute in which a bunch of over-indulged kids whinge because the authorities want to stop them downloading Star Wars for free.

diegoveggie, if PP is a "fake party" what exactly makes it a fake? Was it not really voted into the parliament by real people?
18:33 July 3, 2009 by spy
Deep down there is a filthy capitalist inside every Swede no matter what they tell you.

---> The only surprise is that Swedish society ever looked upon those people as 'heroes' or 'defenders of freedom'.

I second that. That's the only surprise here.

Another form of Stockholm syndrome. perhaps?

"People hate me now for wanting to pause the 6 year free work we've been doing. Feels unfair," wrote Sunde.

I for one dont hate them, they are just making a few bucks, nothing wrong with that, provided they keep TPB the way it is untill the sell goes thru, after that they need to leave, drop all ties to this new TPB. if they do that then the fault lays on the people who change it, GGF, wich im ammazed would be willing to buy this PR landmind waiting to explode, but if they like the idea of having there named smeared across the net and lossing 7mil with no hope of recouping it, then i guess we all find our torrents somwhere else and everyone wins...horray!!
