Food safety authorities in Halmstad in western Sweden have been shocked to find minimum hygiene standards observed by just nine out of seventy restaurants serving pizzas in the town, newspaper Hallands-Posten reports.

Inspectors carried out unannounced checks in the coastal town all through the spring and were horrified by the unacceptably low standards on display at the vast majority of restaurants.

"we're quite shocked. We actually didn't think it would be this bad," food safety inspector Ulrika Cederberg told Hallands-Posten.

Inspectors ordered the immediate closure of one restaurant, which was infested with a sort of beetle that lives on meat, cheese and dried fish.

Another restaurant in a similarly appalling state was given a stay of execution when staff stayed up all night to rectify the many hygienic shortcomings detailed by the inspectors.

The unexpected guests even found cases where food was stored in the toilets. Facilities for washing hands were also in short supply.

"There were nineteen places that didn't have access to a functioning washbasin with soap and paper towels," Cederberg told Expressen.

The authorities have already begun reinspecting the 61 premises that failed to make the grade, with the cost of the second inspection to be borne by the restaurants themselves.

""There were nineteen places that didn't have access to a functioning washbasin with soap and paper towels,""

How on earth can this be?????

Do these places not get a complete inspection before they are allowed to open and again shortly afterwards?

I seen some right grubby looking hombres working in some of these joints.

Tend to avoid them if possible, unless I know them well.
19:44 July 6, 2009 by Kaethar
And this is why I don't go to dodgy pizza joints (or any dodgy joints for that matter.)

Close it ! .. what the Authority is waiting for ?

I think we have to blame whom is incharge first before we blame the MONEY MAKERS ..

Appears it's not an uncommon trend, and Sweden is far from an isolated case...

That is disgusting!

Just for the sake of knowledge, for curiosity's sake you understand, just so we can get our facts right....give us the names of the restaurants along with the names of the owners. Here in the United States even our screwy government realizes the importance of NAMING places and people WHO POSE AN IMMEDIATE THREAT TO PUBLIC HEALTH !! Let the Swedes know who and where these poisiners are so the FREE MARKET can "shut" them down ( lack of customers will do it every time ).
23:18 July 6, 2009 by sodafox
Don't even warn them.... close them permanently.

These people show little respect for their customers and for the potential effects of food poisoning.
00:24 July 7, 2009 by Gwrhyr
I'm not so worried. These types of restaurants are what our immune systems are for, and most of the time our immune systems win.
01:24 July 7, 2009 by Pacey
In Gothenburg this will be close to 100% I promise!!

Just shows how lax are the health authorities. They should immediately cancel the licenses for these restuarants and everything will be spick and span in a week across Sweden. Moreover there should be mandatory checks every week at each restuarant. Why do we pay taxes?

That is why I never eat at restaurants, thanks God, cooking is one of my hobbies.

I'm rather hoping you mean "dodgy", otherwise the pizza places you've been frequenting are a tad more "dodgy" than I'm used to!

Does explain a riddle I have almost always had about pizza in Sweden: why it usually tastes quite poor?

Answer? It ain't pizza: it's that other stuff!
07:40 July 7, 2009 by Muttlestar Galactica
It's a cunning feline plan to be sure!
07:45 July 7, 2009 by Harding00
BY any chance Gwrhyr, do you own a restaurant like this?
08:48 July 7, 2009 by BlackfDes
So the health authorities have picked on the pizza places.

What about all of the other restaurants and cafes in Halmstad?

I bet some of these would fail most of basic standards of hygiene mentioned in the article.

Perhaps it is time that the Health authorities have a "name and shame" system thereby putting the burden of proof to maintain high standards of hygiene back onto the owner.

How many of these are repeat offenders?
08:52 July 7, 2009 by Renfeh Hguh
Swedish pizza's are crap, so it would be no great loss if the places were shut down
09:12 July 7, 2009 by GITM
Its irrelevant, hes right, thats what an immune system is for.

They also tend to target eateries who have had complaints against them.

So probably a mix of a slightly dodgy gut (probably caused by the 10 stor stark poured down the throat before the pizza was eaten) and a few cases of the "Filthy Turk" syndrome, complaining for the sake of it.

Gave us a grand total of 61 fails.

Wow, i'll never eat another pizza.

Had a pizza from my local pizza place last week in Småland for the first time in ages.

Fortunately because they are so floppy the pizza flipped when I picked it up and lo and behold baked into the bottom was a whole load of fluff. paper and other crap.

Needless to say that is the end of pizzas in Sweden for me until Dominos arrive.
10:32 July 7, 2009 by Harding00
Your right, "What ain't kill ya makes ya stronger," but what kills ya, um, kills ya. And sure, most dirty restaurants won't kill you with their unsanitary conditions, but it might make you sick enough for you to wish you were dead. Over the course of 7 weeks I ate in many small, dirty, "restaurants" in Egypt and I never once got sick. Even though it was pretty obvious that the place didn't even know what soap was, or what washing hands meant. But I'll tell you what, the food tasted better there than any nice fancy tourist restaurant. But still, I expect that from third world countries, not in Sweden, where I would hope they have a better system in place to keep these sorts of businesses, well, out of business. I know that in North Carolina (USA) all restaurants must post their certificate from the health department in plain sight, it has an easily identifiable letter system, like in school, A is best, F is, well, I am assuming F means that the business is closed down.
10:36 July 7, 2009 by Mzungu
That's caused by customer slobs, not management of outlet...

*likely just after the photos were shot, the cleaning schedule took place?*

Now I understand why the black olives had wings and legs...
11:05 July 7, 2009 by Holecutter > The Howl From He
Now what did you expect. Most of these joints are run by immo's from third Wold countries where hygiene is not the order of the day. One only has to see the conditions that the live in here to realise that their place of business will be -hole at least and a raging cesspit at best.

If you plebs want to eat from these eye sores on the pretext you are eating real pizza, then you get what you deserve.

11:06 July 7, 2009 by jack sprat
""We were quite shocked,we didnt think it would be this bad""

....according to a food safety inspector.

I wonder just how bad they thought it would be????

I wonder just how often they carry out checks for such a high percentage to be in such a desperate condition?

It appears that the inspectors themselves may be just as responsible as the owners to allow things to get as bad as they have.

Have they been hibernating all winter or for the last few years while the grubby, filthy owners took advantage of insufficient supervision?

I notice that many of these places are run solely by dirty, greasy looking guys and have often thought that with a few more women on the job, the hygiene standards might at least be a little better.
11:48 July 7, 2009 by Paulo +fab muscular than Jonnhy
Oh, it was sarcasm meh being someone who seldom eats pizza or hamburguers or whatever let alone any other junk foods would surely get killed after the first diarrhea.
15:48 July 7, 2009 by occassional
Bricklayers in some thirld world hellhole...pizzaiolos in Sweden. Did it really never dawn to the authorities that nothing good can come out of illiterate, squalid and filthy owners who stand outside their pseudo-Italian ghastly-looking joints, fag in mouth, scratching their nethers and sms-ing on lilac coloured phones? The genuine Italians should be the first to cry blue murder! Close them immediately and run some awareness campaign in the media to name and shame these unscrupulous scoundrels.
16:15 July 7, 2009 by Paulo +fab muscular than Jonnhy
You are a racist moron, aren't you? I live in Italy and there are incredibly many non Italians working as pizzaiolos in this country. One's abilities to cook pizza has nothing to do with ethnic background nor with high level of education since making pizza is one of the easiest dishes a cook would think of. I wonder if you know how to fry an egg though.
17:23 July 7, 2009 by GefleFrequentFlyer
As rough as an assessment as 'occasional' made, I have to agree with him/her 100%! Down to the T!

I once thought that there was some method to the madness on how to make the worst tasting pizza known to man, found uniformly accross the country. Now I know what the special sauce dabbed on top is.
18:51 July 7, 2009 by Paulo +fab muscular than Jonnhy
What does it have to do with the cook's nationality? Your arguments are clearly poor and your prejudiced views are fundamentally insufficient to provide us with any constructive criticism.

Just the other day a few restaurants were inspected and closed in Rome due to the fact that they did not comply with sanitary standards. Furthermore, a significant number of these restaurants were run by *Italians*, actually by Romans to be more precisely.

I wonder how you would be treated in your own country --- hypothetically figuring out you are from Southern Italy and eventually had migrated to the northern part of it. Does judging people like you do help you enhance your self-esteem?
23:45 July 7, 2009 by John Doe
I would like to see the names of the owners of those restaurants. I am convinced that more than 50% of them are non-swedes. Dear Swedish government, thanks for the multicultural enrichment, thanks for the kebab, falafel and dodgy pizza...
09:18 July 8, 2009 by occassional
And let's for a moment suppose that "judging people like that enhances my self esteem". How is that worse that poisoning by negligence and substandard cooking?
17:48 July 8, 2009 by Paulo +fab muscular than Jonnhy
I think the problem here is of strictly rigorous control and inspection. There are inumerous restaurants in the United States which are run by foreign people, however if they do not respect the rules law reinforcement will not be generous with them. Closing immigration borders is a demagogical and populist speech only addressed to fool anyone who can't rationalize substantial information.
