Ohly declares royal residence 'a scandal'

Left Party leader Lars Ohly has spoken out against the Swedish government's decision to turn Haga Palace in Stockholm into a royal residence following Crown Princess Victoria's wedding to Daniel Westling next year.

“I think it is a scandal that they have been offered the palace entirely free. It is owned by the Swedish state, and we got it as a gift,” Ohly told Svenska Dagbladet (SvD) newspaper.

The government has used the palace since 1966, when it was transferred to the state for use "as a residence for prominent people from overseas, who are guests of the government or otherwise considered worthy of the privilege."

Ohly was of the opinion that Victoria and Daniel should “arrange their own housing.”

“That is something almost everyone else has to do. And moreover, they have better economic prerequisites than most people,” he told SvD.

Ohly also raised concerns that turning Haga Palace into a royal residence will compromise the public's hitherto unrestricted access to the park surrounding it.

Although some security measures will be taken, palace officials counter the extent of Ohly's claims. Parkgoers will no longer be able to walk up to the windows of the palace and peer in, but they will still be able to stroll along the nearby Brunnsviken waterfront.

When the government's decision to give the palace to Victoria was announced in April, Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt declared that the royal residence would not affect public access to the park.

"I think that the Swedish people have fond memories of when the 'Haga princesses' lived there (referring to the four elder sisters of the current king). I hope that this decision will lay the basis for a new similar age," he said.

I would have to agree with Ohly in saying that this is not only a scandal but also movement in completely the wrong direction for the State of Sweden.

Sweden, like many other countries, is facing financial hard times. Times in which thousands of residents loose their homes every month for different reasons. I am of the opinion that monarchies are completely redundant and only end up costing the tax payer money despit what ever reports you hear that the royal family no longer recieves money from the state. That is obviously not true.

In my opinion the royal families assests should be siezed by the state and turned into museums, schools, art galleries, tourist destinations and hotels to help RAISE money for the people of Sweden, instead of robbing them of it.
13:14 July 13, 2009 by conboy
I would not be a big fan of Ohly but I have to agree with him on this one as a tax payer here I believe Sweden should be a democratic republic and not a constitutional democracy conceding judicial priveleges to an obscure French noble lineage on doubtful, sectarian principles.

Ohly is full of it, the government got haga palace in the first place from the royals and have been paying them 2 million sek a year for the use of it, now the assignment rights have been returned to the royals and he wants them to pay rent, Lars Ohly is a "useful idiot".

I have never heard him condemn his communist buddies in russia cuba etc at the top living in luxury while their countrymen starved.when the poor peasant farmers of the ukraine and southern russia wrote to lenin in 1921 to tell him of the famine because they thought he didnt know, it was the last letters they ever wrote. Lenin said 'Let the peasants starve', and wrote ranting notes ordering the better-off peasants to be hanged in their thousands and their bodies displayed by the roadsides.Ohly has on numerous occasions described himself as a leninist.

'useful idiots' - as Lenin called Soviet sympathisers in the West
19:28 July 13, 2009 by lingonberrie
So Ohly seems to suggests a cultureless society like the U.S. with their camelot/royalty of wealth whereas their people suffer under Lenin/like pernury without health care, et al, and now live in a Depression exported to the world, while they wage wars around the world.

I would prefer the Swedish monarchy of culture and tradition.

'Culture and tradition'? She's marrying a German fitness trainer who owned some gyms. Get a grip.
20:47 July 13, 2009 by peropaco
Agree 100% with Ohly. Like anyone else, they should work and pay their own rent. Why they hell should fat cheeks and retarded looking Daniel sleeze their way from the hard working residents of Sweden?

Royalty always marry Germans - I think Ohly should be made to clean Haga Park the commie scum.

The Swedish laws allow for a monarchy.. while I am not jumping for joy over the royal family, they do have a history and purpose in this country. I don't know much about it, but the crown princess does seem to do positive things which is far then I can say for the government usually.

Daniel Westling is a successful business man.there is no shame and I hope he has great pride in that. The fact that he is German is irrelevant.

The government was given an estate... the government gave it back. Why should you have to pay for something you own.. besides property taxes. The Swedish royals seem to live within and under the law like the rest of us, they just have more money.

To the idiot above that suggested seizing all their holding... let's go to the US and seize all of Bush, Kennedy and Rockefeller families assets. They are rich and some of the money may have come through past methods that are no longer legal... Seizing someones assets is stealing. Explain how that is right.
23:52 July 13, 2009 by 7
ohly is just looking for media attention to boost his sagging popularity. his statement is idiotic.

agree or disagree with the monarchy...as long as sweden is a constitutional monarchy and the royals have responsibilities and a work schedule to represent sweden, sweden has a responsibility to provide the appropriate financial support and residence for its royals.

Where does some of the commentators on here get their information from?

Daniel Westling is NOT german

Please, research and get your facts straight before saying anything
01:03 July 14, 2009 by 7
where most people get their information from participating in a discussion--thin air.

that would be nice, but would remove the fun of watching people make idiots of themselves. besides, it's always fun to gently and subtly point out to people that they're dingbats when they spew out the most amazingly inaccurate "truths"

if you think that's "off base" pick a random thread and indulge
08:55 July 14, 2009 by conboy
Ohly is an unprincipled, sanctimonious hypocrite who has done well out of the political process so is your King - Sweden needs constitutional change through a referendum welcome to the improved world of republicanism.
09:23 July 14, 2009 by Renfeh Hguh
The King is nothing more than a figure head and a tourist attraction with no powers. Republicanism was a valid cause when royalty ruled countries, now it is just a cause for lefitist haters
10:05 July 14, 2009 by conboy
Your response is as poorly thought out as it is incorrectly spelled out. Democracy is not a complete and perfect state neither is it a greenhouse for intellectual laziness and dishonesty. Sweden has a way to go on this issue as have a number of other countries you are not alone on this you know.
10:44 July 14, 2009 by ameribrit
You talk about the US and their "camelot/royalty of wealth". The Swedish Royalty are not exactly paupers. You just choose to go along with the rest of the sheep like commoners and keep feeding your hard earned money to a family of "cultural and traditional" leeches.

I have no issue with Royalty per se as long as the tax payers are not supporting them with hand outs like this.

And by the way. You may want to check which other countries (like Sweden) are engaged in operations in Afghanistan before you go off about how "they wage wars around the world"
22:25 July 14, 2009 by CTIDinÅrsta
What culture and tradition?

They were crated over from France because no Swede wanted the job. Now she's shacking up with the gym boy. Didn't anyone tell her she could just sh@g him on the side?

And no, he's not German -he's Ockelbobyggde (=Jerry built).

Still, it's got to be worth a try. Misinformation to Japanese tourists is in order methinks.

Lasse cracks me up - the only thing in Swedish politics worth listening to.

i'm afraid you're not really tuned into the history regarding the motivation to select bernadotte as sweden's king.
23:09 July 14, 2009 by conboy
Who cares? They are freeloaders on the taxpayer and have a discriminatory roll in what claims to be an equal society. It sends all the wrong signals you see. Time to give them a pay off and constitute a republic. They have made their money, they have had a good innings, but they are an embarrassment in all fairness.
23:17 July 14, 2009 by 7
well, if someone's bothering to explain a historical motivation to a modern reality, accuracy is rather pertinent. crazy as that sounds and all.

are they? are you aware of their duties to the state and the agenda associated with it? if not, you might want to examine that pesky consideration known as fact.

there's definitely room to argue along those lines.

they are public servants and they still have the support of the majority of the swedish society. how are they an embarrassment?
23:22 July 14, 2009 by ziabach
This is pretty much a pointless topic and could go on forever . I mean there is always going to be republicans and monarchists where ever you are, but what I don't understand if your from a republic, why move to a monarchist country and complain about it when they are plenty of other countries out there like Germany that are republics as well?

I am proud of the British Monarchy and I will be damn proud of the Swedish Monarchy when I move to Sweden or I will be happy with a republic system if I decide to move to Germany instead
07:52 July 15, 2009 by conboy
Do you know what? You are spot on really although I would prefer a Republic the succcession laws are such a glaring root in the arse for the Swedish "equality agenda" I love to stick it to the "Sweden is always fantastic brigade" by simply quoting the clearly sectarian legislation to them. By the way in a test case in the European Court of Human Rights by a Swedish citizen (which I am not) the succession law would not last long. If Swedish republicans are really serious ... But are they?
