Suicide risk rises as grades sink: study

Youth and young adults who receive low marks in primary school are more likely to attempt suicide or self-mutilation compared with those who achieve high marks, according to a Swedish study.

The study was carried out by researchers at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm University and Uppsala University hospital, the Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT) newspaper reports.
“Our results show that life at school provides an important basis for psychic health later in life,” said Anders Hjern, a professor of pediatric epidemiology at Uppsala University hospital and the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen), to UNT.
The results of the study are published in the latest issue of the International Journal of Epidemiology medical journal.

What I am personally interested in is whether or not studies like these will help the world realize that while our education systems are trying to do what they should do, educate anyone who wants to be educated, there are serious flaws in the systems right now. And one of those flaws could be that how we actually test/rank/put value upon our children could be causing them to take their own lives.
