A 55-year-old man died on Sunday night after crashing his motorbike into an elk that had strayed onto the road near Tingsryd in southern Sweden.

A female passenger, also in her fifties, was injured and is being cared for at Växjö hospital.

"They got the elk on top of them," said Robert Mattebo at Kronoberg police.

The accident occurred late on Sunday evening.

A witness called the emergency services shortly after 10pm after noticing the motorbike in a ditch near the Rävemåla roundabout.

On closer inspection the witness then found the injured couple, who were unconscious and buried under the now deceased elk.

The man underwent an emergency operation during the night but his life could not be saved, Kronoberg police confirm.

The woman's injuries are described by the hospital as minor.

Is this really newsworthy? It's sad for the individuals concerned but a pretty normal event outside big cities.

Crashes with elks are really common in Sweden every year around 15 people and 100 seriously injuried in such accidents

Is the Local really going to report on all of these or is it something that seems interesting in Stockholm?

I think it's a reflection of the fact that it's the holiday season and news is a bit thin on the ground.
11:38 July 28, 2009 by editNB
Perhaps you should also consider the fact that this site is accessed by readers outside of Sweden who may find this interesting.

Motorcycles = "Darwin in action"

Just let these people continue to remove themselves from the gene pool and become mobile organ donors for the rest of us.

Not quite - most motorcycle accidents come from mistakes made by drivers in cars. So stupid people are removing others from the gene pool. The largest cause is from drivers not noticing the motorcycle. Accident Facts (sorry, only US info)

Just because it's dangerous doesn't make it darwinism.

This statistic confirms a belief that I have had since getting my MC licence 15 years ago.

6. In the multiple vehicle accidents, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcycle right-of-way and caused the accident in two-thirds of those accidents.

Everyone who wants to drive a car should first get a motorcycle licence and be out there on the roads. I know my experience out there made me a much more aware car driver.

Agree with Trow,for once,....

If repetitive reporting of these incidents makes ppl.more aware of the dangers and helps save one life or bad injury then its worthwhile.

What many drivers not familiar with Sweden dont realize is just how big is the risk, especially driving along roads closely bordered by forest.

A lot of drivers tend to drive along these mostly traffic free roads in a fairly relaxed manner at what they mistakenly believe is a safe speed, until its too late.

Quite often and especially in bad light the reaction time available to the driver is virtually zero, as the elks can appear in front of a vehicle almost as if from nowhere, partly because they are out of sight so close to the road a split second earlier and partly because its amazing how they blend unnoticed into the forest background.

Another danger is that because of their size and especially their height, only their legs are taken out by the front of the car and the first thing that the whole weight of their large bodies contacts or smashes into is the windscreen and the ppl.behind it.

Virtually no time to react and no second chance.

Take care,out there.

yep it really is crazy that swedes know of these dangers like elks yet you still see them speeding inbetween speeding cameras, dumb asses. My girlfriens and her parents are very sensible on tree lined roads favoured by elks, my girlfriend really is quite paranoid about it, the way to be.

Ive passed 2 elk accidents when i was out and about with work, the cars were totalled, and i later found out people died in both. You can only imagine what hitting an elk on a motorbike would be like phooweee.

Common sense is a great criteria,if you don't know the forest road your riding or driving on,be extra vigilant for Elk and Deer. Regularly travel the same roads, become aware of crossing points of wildlife, they follow fairly strict paths through forests to road crossing points.

Maybe this is wrong but in English a Elk is really a Moose. At least in our country that is the case. An Elk is a smaller deer like animal bigger than a deer but smaller than a moose.
15:23 July 31, 2009 by jack sprat
"Hoots mon, theres a moose loose aboot this hus"

It can be a bit confusing, but as I understand it the American Elk is a different creature to the European Elg which is often more commonly known as a Moose.
15:36 July 31, 2009 by Miss Kitten
The American Elk (very similar to the European Red Deer) is the second largest species of deer in North America. Here is a picture of one. As you can see it's very different from a moose:

No one seems to have mentioned the Elk/Moose in all of this...

It died too.
