Man dies in motorbike crash with elk

A 55-year-old man died on Sunday night after crashing his motorbike into an elk that had strayed onto the road near Tingsryd in southern Sweden.

"They got the elk on top of them," said Robert Mattebo at Kronoberg police.
The accident occurred late on Sunday evening.
A witness called the emergency services shortly after 10pm after noticing the motorbike in a ditch near the Rävemåla roundabout.
On closer inspection the witness then found the injured couple, who were unconscious and buried under the now deceased elk.
The man underwent an emergency operation during the night but his life could not be saved, Kronoberg police confirm.
The woman's injuries are described by the hospital as minor.

Crashes with elks are really common in Sweden every year around 15 people and 100 seriously injuried in such accidents
Is the Local really going to report on all of these or is it something that seems interesting in Stockholm?
People on motorcycles, mopeds, etc., are constantly running into things, resulting in death, injury, and great loss of property, and they should constantly be reminded of the risks.
My girl friends son recently almost killed himself after he too went into a ditch on a motorcycle, avoiding a car. If he ever fully recovers remains in doubt, but in any case it will cost him endless difficulties.
Just let these people continue to remove themselves from the gene pool and become mobile organ donors for the rest of us.
Just because it's dangerous doesn't make it darwinism.
6. In the multiple vehicle accidents, the driver of the other vehicle violated the motorcycle right-of-way and caused the accident in two-thirds of those accidents.
Everyone who wants to drive a car should first get a motorcycle licence and be out there on the roads. I know my experience out there made me a much more aware car driver.
If repetitive reporting of these incidents makes ppl.more aware of the dangers and helps save one life or bad injury then its worthwhile.
What many drivers not familiar with Sweden dont realize is just how big is the risk, especially driving along roads closely bordered by forest.
A lot of drivers tend to drive along these mostly traffic free roads in a fairly relaxed manner at what they mistakenly believe is a safe speed,until its too late.
Quite often and especially in bad light the reaction time available to the driver is virtually zero, as the elks can appear in front of a vehicle almost as if from nowhere,partly because they are out of sight so close to the road a split second earlier and partly because its amazing how they blend unnoticed into the forest background.
Another danger is that because of their size and especially their height,only their legs are taken out by the front of the car and the first thing that the whole weight of their large bodies contacts or smashes into is the windscreen and the ppl.behind it.
Virtually no time to react and no second chance.

Ive passed 2 elk accidents when i was out and about with work, the cars were totalled, and i later found out people died in both. You can only imagine what hitting an elk on a motorbike would be like phooweee.

It can be a bit confusing, but as I understand it the American Elk is a different creature to the European Elg which is often more commonly known as a Moose.
