A regional Taliban commander has warned that Swedes serving in Afghanistan will be the target of reprisals following the killing of three of the guerrilla group’s fighters by Swedish troops last week.

“Revenge will come. Maybe not today, or tomorrow, or next week. But it will come,” the Taliban leader told the TT news agency in an interview published on Wednesday.

“Swedes will be killed.”

Described as a sinewy man in his forties and referred to as Zamir, the man claims to be second in command of Taliban forces fighting in the northern Afghan province of Balkh.

In an interview carried out in a secret location several hours from the provincial capital of Mazar-i-Sharif, the base of operations for Swedish troops in the area, Zamir emphasized that he and other Taliban supporters have no plans to submit to the wishes of foreign peacekeepers or the current government of Afghanistan.

“Faith burns deep in our hearts and we’ll never resign ourselves to a foreign ceasefire. We’d rather die as martyrs,” he told TT.

He claimed foreign soldiers weren’t interested in helping Afghan citizens, but instead were trying to “poisoning our faith” and create artificial divisions pitting Afghan against Afghan.

According to Zamir, there are around 60 guerrilla fighters in the Char Bolak district, about 40 kilometres west of Mazar-i-Sharif.

They are armed with Kalashnikovs, rocket launchers, and mines, and are prepared to employ suicide bombers in an effort to drive out foreign troops and disrupt the upcoming Afghan elections, scheduled for August 20.

Three of his fighters were killed last week in a fire fight with Swedish and Finnish troops who were on patrol 150 kilometres west of Mazar-i-Sharif as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).

Taliban supporters under Zamir's command also have contact with other Taliban sympathizers in Afghanistan and Pakistan, he said.

But the group’s orders originate with Mulla Omar, the leader of the Taliban who served as the de facto head of Afghanistan when the group ruled the country between 1995 and 2001.

Zamir explained that Taliban supporters would only be willing to lay down their weapons once foreign soldiers have left Afghanistan and current president Hamid Karzai agrees to share power with the guerilla group.

When asked what message he had for the Swedish people, Zamir urged them to remove their troops from Afghanistan.

“Take home your soldiers, your young men. You have nothing to gain here, only death,” he said.

He added, however, that Swedes and other foreigners would be welcomed by the Taliban under certain conditions.

“If you come without weapons to rebuild our poor, warn-torn country, you will be welcomed,” he told TT.

“If you are Muslims.”

Ah well. Sell them some ball-bearings or weapons and claim neutrality.

Why is Sweden in Afghanistan at first place?
20:03 July 29, 2009 by johnnytango
If you stir up a hornets nest you can expect to be stung. Pull all the troops out and bring home our men before somebody comes home in a body bag. Trust me it is not going to be worth it. Swedish military has no business being in Afghanistan...unless of course we are selling weapons there. So what is the mission again, Carl?

As for the threats I think Herr Zamir should have a look at the kill ratios before he thinks ISAF forces will s*it themselves.
20:28 July 29, 2009 by bigmikey
JT, Thats right, run home and hide. Muslim extremists will never come to Sweden , so why worry about people being killed a world away.

Sweden accepts Afghan refugees, but why risk going to the source of the problem and try to stabilize the country so you dont need to accept their refugees. Hypocrites. Stick your head in the sand and criticize others. Thats safest.

For some reason I believe it has something to do with the current government in Sweden and their international and domestic policies + attitudes concerning the "terrorist threats and muslim communities"...

Although Sweden has been revealing a much better image concerning minorities and regarding the third world countries, in the last 2-3 years it has shifter dramatically... I remember the words the prime minister had uttered some 2 years ago about the international terrorism targetting Sweden. And to me it seems to be a result of his policies that brought this result!

Hopefully next time the Swedes will go back to traditional social democratic government with a touch of Pirate and Green support...
20:45 July 29, 2009 by johnnytango
BM...By stabilizing countries would you be referring to such success stories like Iraq and Vietnam for instance. It is very difficult for outsiders to manage the affairs of different cultures. Perhaps it is no coincidence that the US economy is tanking at the same time they are all over the world Stabilizing. Safe is good...wise is better.
20:46 July 29, 2009 by Tennin
I imagine in a couple of years Mister Zamir will be applying for asylum in Sweden...

Sweden is participating in NATO and the forces are there in agreement with the other UN multinational forces in Afghanistan to stabilize the region. These terrorists always making threats so Swedish forces shouldn't chicken out because of that. We have a commitment to the United Nations.

Hello!

The Taliban are locked into a war with coalition forces.

Swedes will kill Taliban members, and Taliban members will kill Swedes.

This is what happens in war. !!!!!

I don't support killings in any sense, but history dictates casualties in most armed conflicts.

P.S - Obama Bin Laden // Used to live in northern Sweden.

That's right, withdraw. Withdraw from the whole world, but keep on letting more of the vermin into your country. Also, continue to line up your women for the rapes and beatings which are becoming more and more prevelant. Gather up, sheep. Keep moving. The slaughter is just ahead. Good sheep, remain docile. I've said it before here. I'm so glad my grandfather from Uppsala got on the boat in 1917!

The taliban are armed with ak47's mines and rocket lauchers.

A suggestion.

Why don't the military have a chat with Bofors and other Swedish manufacturers and see exactly what the troops can be armed with, with a serious supply of ammunition.

Then the troops can assist the taliban in committing suicide, if they desire it.

Last time upstarts messed with Sweden was in the Katanga province of the Congo and they got a sky load of Saab Tunan. The Taliban, should not want a repeat performance with the Gripen. A UN Tunan is in the Flygvapenmuseum, in Linkoping.

Now you know what Israel has been dealing with for the last few decades.

Oops! Turns out three more Taleban were killed after attacking a Swedish-Finnish patrol this weekend. Don´t seem to be very good soldiers these Taleban lads do they?

The original mission in Afghanistan would have been to rid the place of the Taliban and capture Bin Laden immediately after 9/11, but George Bush blew the opportunity by instead goiong into Iraq claiming to be looking for non existant weapons of mass destruction (WMD's).

We're supposedly there now to bring stability and democracy to the area. Good luck. The place is a medieval hell hole. At least Iraq was a semi modern country. Afghanistan is still in the Dark Ages.

Canada is also there as part of NATO and one of only three countries (USA and UK also) in an official combat role. So far we've lost over 100 soldiers. Support for staying in Afghanistan is now as only 34%.

As I expected before, I can see racist, fascist comment from same old posters. Eurostan, you can't insult a whole nation like that. There are bunch of idiots living in Afghanistan or elsewhere. They enjoy that medias interview them and convey their abysmal threats to the world. But how many westerners have been killed by these idiot Talibans and Alqaida,... who many of them have been killed by western militants?
00:34 July 30, 2009 by Afghan
As an Afghan guy I would be extremely sad if I hear any Swede has died in my Country. Soon or later US and UK would sign the peace agreement with them, Sweden should do this now, before we lose any body in the bloody war.

If there is a war on then surely we should expect Swedish politicians and troops to be targeted on Swedish soil, shouldn't we? After all Swedish troops are in Afghanistan killing Afghans.

How can one logically argue otherwise?

Regarding the comment re Islam as a religion of peace, what exactly were the Christian crusades all about? Christian soldiers weren't thousands of miles away from home on holiday, they were in Muslim lands killing Muslims in the name of the Christian God!

All religions are a means of control, power and wealth for those doing the controlling. The masses, both Muslim, Christian and all others just lap the propaganda up and become blinded to the actual method of control being employed.
10:57 July 30, 2009 by si
"All religions are a means of control, power and wealth" - well put - Shame we can't outlaw all relgion based on this premise.
11:39 July 30, 2009 by DaTraveler
Sweden is upping their commitment to ISAF to around 500 troops by the end of the year. They're in the more peaceful region in the North along with Germans, Norwegians, Finns, Hungarians, New Zealanders. Now of course for the past year the North has seen tons more battles and suicide bombings so it's slowly turning into the South. So good luck to the troops there.

The Germans are combating the Taliban and are in extensive combat for the first time since ww2.
11:46 July 30, 2009 by Kevtravels
Now what's really interesting is the role the Scandinavian nations play in ISAF. Historically mostly neutral and into UN peacekeeping, they are playing a big role in the mission.

Denmark has nearly 800 troops fighting with the British and Estonians in the South. They've lost 23 troops over the past few years. Norwegians have around 500 or 600 troops in the North. And now Sweden has nearly 400 and slowly getting into combat.

Most European countries haven't seen war since the Korean war over 50years ago, so Afghanistan is pretty much the heaviest combat for this current generation of soldiers. It's intense. As an American I thought the Iraq war was intense, but apparently Afghanistan is heating up to be an even more hazardous campaign.
12:41 July 30, 2009 by Nemesis
Just some thoughts of the top of my head.

If the Taliban continue to threaten Swedish people, then Sweden should respond in kind.

Sweden once had a nuclear weapon program. Maybe that program should be restarted and combined with Saab's flying wing bomber concept.

I am sure nuclear carpet bombing would sort out any problem in Afghanistan. That would also make terrorists in other countries realise that threatening people is not a good idea.

@eye_witness you say it is are godfathers who are at the bottom of all the killing? if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it must be a duck. over 90% of all armed conflicts on this planet right now have to do with islam and wanting a place to have shira law. the crusades were 100's of years ago and the church has changed and adapted to modern times. the crusades started because muslims attacked spain. yet islam has not changed at all just adapted to modern warfare with suicide bombers, roadside bombs. if this article does not shed light on the war on islam what will? "If you come without weapons to rebuild our poor, warn-torn country, you will be welcomed," he told TT.

"If you are Muslims." keep rockin it eurostan you are right on all acounts.

@playmaker... The rule of the game is very simple. 40,000 muslims killed in Kashmir by Indian, 100000 iraqi muslims died due to war, like wise thousands and thousands in Palestine, Bosnia and many other places, and how you have the guts to come up with stupid analogy of duck-quacks... you have blood of innocent on your hands. And if these helpless people run away to other countries , we have people like 'EuroSATAN' who if given chance will come up with swords and start killing them.

Please stop spreading hate and let them live peacefully.

yeah all innocent. sure hamas was elected by vowing the DEATH of JEWS. the taliban was the most repressive regiem out there killing thoundsands of there own and destroying very old statues. irans leaders want to wipe out the jews but the nuclear program is just for electricity. lol. google ongoing conflicts all but 2 are islam related. @eye_witness what happens to a muslim if he or she wants to convert to christainty in pakistan? i read it is a death penalty still to this day and you need very little evidense to convict. and in most muslims countries it is like this. a man in egypt was refused to change his religion on his id by the high court. how can anyone say muslims are on the same page with any other religion.. come on. it is not a faith but a polictcal party. no other religion in the world rules there people based only on what would muhammed do. and the taliban is a prime ex. GO SWEDEN FOR KILLING AS MANY AS POSSIBLE. TAX MONEY WELL SPENT
00:19 July 31, 2009 by Playmaker
you mean 4.5 billion infidels (disbelievers)right. strait from mohommed

Tabari IX:69 "Killing disbelievers is a small matter to us."

Qur'an 2:191 "And kill them wherever you find and catch them. Drive them out from where they have turned you out; for Al-Fitnah (polytheism, disbelief, oppression) is worse than slaughter."

Bukhari:V1B1N6 "Just issue orders to kill every Jew in the country."

Qur'an:8:12 "I shall terrorize the infidels. So wound their bodies and incapacitate them because they oppose Allah and His Apostle."

very peaceful people. and for those who quote the bible make sure to use the new testoment for this is what we go by. and the christian religion has not started a war since the last cursades.
01:28 July 31, 2009 by totyis
@Iraniboy "If you are Muslims." Racist? Do you even know the meaning of that word? Or maybe that of islamofascism?

@Eye_Witness at 44 and to all of those who come arguing from a historical perspective: are you a profesor in history? History it is writen by people, institutions, states who are driven by interests. History is forgoten, rewrited, deleted, manipulated. Having as an argument some facts taken out from 2 or 3 history books you may have read it is ...löjligt.

@mobings. where do i start? lets see 1st we can pick are fights where ever we want since we have freedoms in this country. thanks largely to people like my grandpa who fought and killed a sh*t load of nazis. "Sweden is peace-loving country". have you not read the headlines lately. my country(became a deul citizen last week) sell a lot of war weapons. farc has swedish rockets, swedes kill afgans in combat. oh lets not forget the huge riots several years ago. have you not been to a AIK vs. djur. soccer match. peaceful lol. and what do you mean take your people out of proverty. makes no sense. how can you all quotes from mohammed disinfo. it is his quotes. he is why women are stoned daughters are killed by family for honor. we even have honor killings here in peaceful sweden. lets not forget rosengard capital of peaceful sweden. what are you doing up at 2:22 am are you even in sweden?
15:39 July 31, 2009 by ukinsweden
Arnt the discussions above the real reason why there are problems in the world? People discriminate and follow other people (leaders, religions) like mindless sheep, and kill in the name of others without actually thinking about the fact they are taking another human being...

Why not learn to get along and be nice to one another hey? and the grow the F**K up
16:33 July 31, 2009 by drgony1
yes superb if you stir up some one home or killed then of course you will have to face the situation i dont know why people follow other peoples without knowing the history, background and outcome, and getting benefit of one person around this whole war created.
