Following a series of EU criticisms regarding Iran's nuclear ambitions and human rights practices, the Swedish EU presidency has spoken out against Iran's recent execution of 24 people by hanging.

The EU presidency said it "condemns the execution of 24 persons in the city of Karaj in Iran on 30 July 2009" in a statement on Thursday.

The Swedish presidency "is concerned about the continued large-scale use of the death penalty in Iran, including the repeated incidence of collective executions during the past month", the statement continued.

"The Presidency continues to call on the Iranian authorities to abolish the death penalty completely and, in the meantime, to establish a moratorium on executions," it added.

Last week Iran hanged 24 convicted drug traffickers in a prison in Karaj, according to a deputy Tehran prosecutor.

The latest hangings bring to at least 219 the number of people executed in the Islamic republic so far this year, according to an AFP count based on news reports.

They were the second such executions in about a month in the same prison, where the Iranian authorities hanged 20 drug traffickers on July 4.

In July last year, Iran hanged 29 people who had been convicted of various crimes, including murder, rape and drug trafficking. It was the largest mass execution in recent years.

In 2008, Iran executed 246 people, second only to China.

Tehran says the death penalty is a necessary tool for maintaining public security and is only applied after exhaustive judicial proceedings.

Murder, rape, armed robbery, drugs trafficking and adultery are all punishable by death in Iran.

In late July, senior European politicians raised concerns about human rights in Iran and repeated demands for the release of a French woman lecturer jailed on charges of espionage.

Sweden assumed the EU's rotating presidency from the Czech Republic last month.

So i wonder how many comments on this one. 80 or 90 maybe. 246 people this year alone. they hang people for adultery. yeah real peaceful religion. i guess thats why there are so many refugees. most islamic countries have penaltys like this. i just wished it was in the headlines everyday like they do for every little thing America does wrong. this is the most insane religion in the world. now with the lashings in sudan. for what showing some leg. in saudi a women was jailed for being raped then pardon by the king, but was convicted by the court. convicted for being raped. thats say everything about this satanic religion.

An ironic call from Swedish gov. to abolish execution in Iran while recognizing the illegitimate Ahmadinejad gov. that fires at peaceful demonstrations. Does this meam that the Swedish gov. only cares about the hiuman rights of people inside prisions?

Playmaker,

.... "the four most populous countries in the world (the People's Republic of China, India, United States and Indonesia) apply the death penalty and are unlikely to abolish it at any time soon" ... (wiki (may be its true))

and probably the above for countries have four different religions.

whats the point in bringin religion into this ??/

I am sick of this propaganda against Iran, there is hell worst going on around the globe and nobody cares, but since uncle sam is against Iran these days the puppets all over the world are makin noise as much as they can.

i never said the death penalty is wrong! i think it is a good deterent to murders. it should only be used when there is murder.

whats the point in bringin religion into this ??/

Qur'an 4:15 "If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them; if they testify, confine them to houses until death [by starvation] claims them."

well since thier laws are based on the quran. is there a hanging penalty for having sex (adultery) in any of the countries you listed. well maybe indonesia.

Propaganda what a joke. we need more info about these types of laws. come on how many dead over a cartoon? look up the ratio of death penalty per cap. 246 in half a year dam thats a lot. there is not much worse going on than the cont. war on islam. we have been at war for a looooong time. time to end it and bring freedom to all esp. women
13:44 August 7, 2009 by this_aint_sparta
your mind set is a typical product of propaganda these days, that no matter whats the reason behind but start to but it on religion straight away,

some a$$ hole was executed in iran for drug trafficking and you brought in the punishment defined in kuran for unfaithful woman ?? is there a corelation ?

The fact is, there are many people who hate the USA so much that they will refuse to condemn or acknowledge abuses elsewhere. I think there is nothing that Iran, or any other enemy of the US could do which would raise youre ire. Condemn the US if you want- that's fine. But don't be a hypocrite about abuses elsewhere. And it seems to me to make perfect sense to bring up religion when discussing the policies of the Iranian government. Last time I checked, the Islamic Republic of Iran was a theocracy, with ultimate power being in the hands of the Mullahs.

@this aint sparta

wont dont you get about women and men being hung for having sex.(adultery) is wrong. period. i looked it up i can't find no other religion who does this. and a lot of times it is the father or brother who does the killing honor killing that is. all honor killings are women being killed by family for having SEX or somtimes only kissing or talking to a infidel. heaven forbid. the stone women to death in the streets of saudi have you ever seen a video of a women being stoned to death with a white sheet over there body so you can see the blood. i think it is up to stronger nations to protect people who can not protect themself. by force if need be. thats the worst thing about sweden is it not better to spend money on making the contries better than to take refugees? i sure most would rather stay home if it was safe. War is the only thing that will restore peace. just like WWI, WWII, kosovo, sir lanka.

whatever you said might be right, I am not defending any religion here, I was just a lil %%%%% when you brought religion into Iranian hangings. While googling "executions", it took me 30secs to find out that US is on top, then why Iran ?
01:30 August 14, 2009 by Playmaker
I call your bullsh*t i did the same thing i found for the whole USA in 2008 there were 37. all who have been in since the late 70's to early 80's. and have been in front of many judges and jury. and of the 37 2 were forgien.

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/executions-united-states-2008

look it up LIAR.

Of course religion is brought up. it is the "ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN" where a preacher is SUPREME LEADER
