Berry pickers have discovered a large sum of money hidden in the forest outside of Växjö in southern Sweden.

Police are investigating the identity of the person who stashed the cash, which amounts to at least 100,000 kronor ($14,000), reported the Smålandsposten newspaper.

In July, berry pickers discovered the money and subsequently turned it over to the police. The stash would have likely remained hidden had it not been dug up by an animal.

A police investigator is now trying to discover the origin of the money. Evidence at the scene indicates it might have come from a home robbery, either one that hasn't been reported or one that occurred outside of the municipality.

Police do not want to reveal the amount of money discovered by the berry pickers, but said it is a six-figure sum. They have asked the general public to contact them with any leads as to the rightful owner of the money.

what is it with people here an honesty?

There was the guy that found 500,000 kr in car borrowed from a garage and handed it in, and now 100,000 kr found buried in the woods and handed in...

Take it home, hide it for a few months, then spend it.

The comments show exactly the difference between Swedes and non-Swedes.

Do none of you find that your lack of honesty a bit out of place?

Maybe you should stop and think.

Interesting. I'd be a little worried if my sambo (a Swede) were to find a stack of cash hidden in the woods - he'd likely turn it in as well. I, on the other hand, think its equivalent to winning the lottery. If someone is shady enough to stash money in the woods, they themselves would expect for it to be kept if someone else found it. how do you trace buried paper money anyway?

Now if it was a lost diamond ring or some other kind of valuable, or even a wallet filled with money, that's a different story - I'd turn it in automatically.

Swedes are really honest people and they prove it in many occasions.

It's good to see a lot of people assume that the finder is a swede, despite no evidence of that.

If it were a crime, a lot here will automatically think it's a foreigner.

Don't get me wrong, most swedes are honest truthful people but who are the berry pickers???!!!

Having picked berries in Sweden during my student days there, I know that most berry pickers are foreigners, like seasonal workers from Poland, Lithuania, Estonia etc, other immigrants like us foreign students etc.

However, whoever that picked it and handed it in, despite the harsh world economy; lived up to that swedish standard of honesty which is great.

Kudos to that person and I hope he/she gets a little reward.

That is an amazing coincidence because I lost my bag containing well over 100000 Kr the other day. The last time I remember having the bag I was mushroom picking in a lovely forest just south of Växjö (the cantarella are magnificent at this time of year). I can't quite remember all the details because one of the mushrooms made me feel ill. Per chance could the bag be mine?

Yours Sincerely,

A. Liar

(Only joking :-) Actually, it would not surprise me if this money is drug related.)

Great. The good work should always be appreciated regardless of by whom it is done. I also guess that swedish people are very honest in most cases. Infact this is the only thing for which I love swedish and sweden.

Last year when I come to this country, my important documents and money was lost in stockholm central but thanks God I get my all things few days back from lost and found office. I am really thankful to all those.

I usually joke with my friends that swedish people are as cool as the Sweden weather but in a positive sense :) . God bless all honest people.

I also salute to those berry pickers who shows their highest level of honesty.

Glad to hear that honest folks are still out there. Regardless of their original birth place or upbringing, many non-native Swedes enjoy the honest Swedish lifestyle so much that they adopt it as their own. Honesty by birth place or honesty by learned social behavior...does not matter...just happy to hear stories that remind us that it still exists.
