Princess Madeleine announces engagement

Princess Madeleine, Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf's youngest child, is to wed her long-time boyfriend Jonas Bergström, the Royal Court has announced.

The Swedish king has given his consent and "in accordance with the constitution received the approval of the government," a royal court press release stated on Tuesday.

"They have known each other a long time now and as Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling have become engaged it is nice for them to also do so. Love is infectious," Nina Eldh, a press spokesperson at the Royal Court, told news agency TT.

The date for the wedding has not yet been decided, but according to Eldh it will not take place before Crown Princess Victoria's or next year's general election.

"The engagement was confirmed today. At a press conference at Solliden on Öland later today the young couple will meet the media and talk about the happy event," she said.

Sten Hedman, a society reporter who has followed the Royal Court for many years, argues that the engagement comes at a surprising time. He thinks that it is also surprising that the engagement will be so long.

"But I presume that they consider it to be over the top with two royal weddings and that it will perhaps divert attention from the election. I therefore presume that the wedding will take place later in the autumn."

Hedman gave his opinion of Madeleine's choice of husband.

"He is the perfect choice, future lawyer, faultless Swedish upper-middle class. No one can have any complaints. He and the king are also said to work well together," Hedman said.

The government will hold an extraordinary meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the matter.

Princess Madeleine is 27-years-old and is the third child of King Carl XVI Gustaf. She is third in line to the Swedish throne after Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip.

She graduated from Enskilda high school in 2001 and has since completed a bachelor degree in art, ethnology and modern history.

Madeleine is popular among the Swedish population and has worked hard in recent years to shed her party princess image, developing a keen engagement in social issues.

In addition to other public duties, she works with the World Childhood Foundation, a charity founded by her mother, Queen Silvia, in 1999.

Jonas Bergström, who is 30-years-old, met the princess through mutual friends in the autumn of 2002.

Bergström grew up in Djursholm outside of Stockholm. His father Claes runs two successful construction companies. Jonas also has two older brothers - Ted and Peder.

Jonas Bergström graduated from Danderyd's high school in 1999 with top grades and completed a law degree at Stockholm University in 2006. He is currently working as a lawyer at the prestigious Stockholm firm Vinge.

Hail to the Princess!! In the degenerated Swedish society we live in today, Princess Madeleine shines through like the princess she is. One can be nothing but proud after hearing this good news.
09:05 August 11, 2009 by Jan M
Inevitable. Adds fuel to the rumours that the engagement of Daniel and Victoria was an etiquette decision so that this one could go ahead.

Rumor has it she is preggers ;) .... reminds me of the jamie lee spears story
14:15 August 11, 2009 by I Love Lamp
Do you mean Jamie Lynn Spears? I don't really see why it would remind you of that. Jamie Lynn was 16 years old at the time—Princess Madeleine is 27.

Wow...where did this Princess come from? How have I only ever seen the other one before?!?! This one is WAY cuter, and in my age bracket too...damn, another opportunity to become royalty missed
15:26 August 11, 2009 by Tutu
Congratulations to the most beautiful princess in europe. Mzungu you are wrong, she is going to attract tourists and boast for swedish business community.
15:34 August 11, 2009 by byke
**laughs very hard***

yeah maybe inbreeds from Falun or the South ... but swedish tourist dont exactly help the economy compared to foreign cash.

I admit she does look better than her old sister (aka Jay Leno)

And many swedish country bumpkins aka simple people will get great enjoyment from reading seeing either wedding on TV and getting to order the commemorative plate.

But realistically what type of genre does this family attract ? Germans ? LOL

The fact remains, if you as a princess share the tabloids with Anna Bok (SP?) and Charlotte Pirelli (SP?) it doesnt say much does it
15:50 August 11, 2009 by Tutu
She was aknowledged the most beautiful princess in Europe by Newsweek and prince williams of uk as the most handsome prince. if any body have an eye for taste they would agree with me that the lady is pretty. so we do not need to debate over that. i meant that her wedding would attract tourists (foreign). u cannot refer to swedes as tourists in their own country.

Utter rubbish! Tell me who exactly is going to visit is going to visit an insignificant country such as Sweden as a direct result of its third in line to the throne getting married? I mean really....

She is just another pampered blood sucker who lives the high life on other peoples hard graft and contributes bugger. Bring on the revolution and lets see her working as a checkout girl in Willys!
16:01 August 11, 2009 by Mzungu
More apt it be Lidl,it's German owned!

*luckily, am not a tax payer*
16:09 August 11, 2009 by Kieruk
Hmmmm...think I would shop more at willys if she was there!
16:12 August 11, 2009 by byke
According to german press, she has had a fair bit of experience with "willys"

I was thinking the same thing after seeing the recnt pictures...not a woman blossoming it seems.
11:25 August 13, 2009 by farnoxo
Yaaaaawn! I wanna steal some of the limelight from my older (and substantially more dignified and intelligent) sister. Should we care - apart from the fact that our tax money will go towards funding the no doubt lavish marriage. Royal families are an anachronism that belongs in the 19th century and have no place in modern society.

PS.

Dear Madeleine and Victoria

Since a (admittedly small) chunk of my tax money will go towards making your wedding a special day, I am assuming that I will receive an invitation. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend this happy occasion as I have prior engagements on both dates, however, please feel free to send a piece of wedding cake to my home address.

Yours sincerely....
11:34 August 13, 2009 by Kieruk
I was under the impression that the royal family get a financial grant from the government each year to spend as they like? So if they shoose to spend it on a wedding instead of a holiday or a few new cars, what does it matter?

Yes, I know this is still our tax money...but its not like we are giving them more for the wedding, just that they need to use it in a different way? Eller??
17:17 August 14, 2009 by Baroness_Fredericks
Though they are not the same, a monarchy and a dictatorship have some similarities. You are always under pressure to do as they each dictate. However, nowadays, most Royals are unnecessary and a heavy burden on the people. They are used instead to be an attraction more than being sovereign. For tourism more than being and actual figure head. The only "true" monarchy left is Liechtenstein. These Royal Families are more like Hollywood stars now. We, our maternal family, are related to Count Fredericks, Minister of the Imperial Court of Russia and best friend to the Tsar, Nicholas II. You can look it up easily. Their are many nobles in exile all over the world, still. But, even though a Monarch may abdicate a Throne, it does never ends that Monarchy. It merely passes to the "next" in line, no matter how far away they may be. China still has an Emperor, so does Russia, though it be an Empress now. All in exile.
