Swedish prison numbers at 15-year high

The Swedish prison population has reached record levels, according to a budget proposition presented to the government by the Prison and Probation Service (Kriminalvården).

The number of clients managed by the service increased by 751 from 2008 to a current 20,920. The increase has primarily occurred within non-custodial treatment services.
The number of prisoners in custodial services amounted to 6,580 in the first half of 2009, an increase of one percent on 2008.
Prisoners being treated within non-custodial services increased by 4.8 percent on 2008 to 14,340 in the first half of 2009.
The Prison and Probation Service writes that on average 95 percent of prison places have been occupied over the first half of 2009 which is five percent above the desired limit.
The service however expects pressure on correctional facilities to ease off over the full year with an average of 20,880 clients.
The service writes that a government review of the penal system, to be completed in 2012, makes future projections somewhat uncertain.
The review will consider, among other things, whether the application of alternatives to custodial sentences should be extended in order to ease pressure on prisons.
The service confirms plans to extend the number of places available within correctional facilities by 1,469 during the period 2009-2012.

Couldn't we have a better picture of the problem if the report described the ethnic/religion of these "clients"?

i am not trying to turn this into a discussion on the american sysytem . I am just taking exception to the posters attempt to turn this into a race issue.
Yes, and If I don't get at least 20 TV channels in Arabic I'll take my case to the Yurpeen Court of Yooman Rites.

The prevalence of imprisonment in 2001 was higher for
-- black males (16.6%) and Hispanic males (7.7%) than for white males (2.6%)
-- black females (1.7%) and Hispanic females (0.7%) than white females (0.3%)
I do not think this is a race or immigration issue but merely a class issue. Like in the United States, it is non-whites that typically live in poverty, have a worse of education and commit crime. So it is no surprise this is reflected in the penal system.
And this will clean up the streets of Sweden!

Then you take someone like Corrections Corporation of America (CXW) which trades on the NYSE. They lobby Congress for stricter jail sentences to keep prison populations up. Of course there is crime, but the numbers are also inflated because there is incentive to arrest, prosecute, and jail criminals.
How would it clean up Sweden? Well if you can agree that a for-profit prison system would ultimately focus on increasing the prison population and housing them for longer periods. And you understand that it is the poor and uneducated that commit crime (not race). If you can further see that it is typically non-white and non-western immigrants that are the uneducated and poor. Then you can begin to see that while crime statistics rise, you can begin to understand how "Sweden's streets are cleaned up"
And you can talk over the dinner table about how the article in the paper stating 'minorities make up the majority of prison population' is so tragic. You pay taxes to limit this with Gov't programs,but that's just for peace of mind.
As much as i hate to brake ti to you guys this is about Sweden xD.
Since you've already entered the ethnicity thing, I saw a Norwegian show or something about rapes in Oslo a few years back. There were 47 violent rapes for one year, ALL of them were committed by Turks and Arabs.
I've read somewhere, but i don't remember where (obviously), that a muslim man in Sweden is 27 times more likely to commit rape than Swedish men. Can anyone confirm or deny that? Is it completely made up? I didn't believe the number could be true until I saw that Norwegian thingie. Is it true or not and why (and this is a fact.. I'm not going to argue with someone about this) is it so much common for middle easterners and Africans to commit crimes than us? How can anyone of them bring themselves to do it? After we take them in, give them money, housing, free education, health care etc? Why are e.g. far eastern Asians a so much better immigration group?
Like "longtime" said you just persue your anti-white agenda in all discussions. Even if you're not Swedish that doesn't give you any credibility to be anti-minorities. In fact I have seen more non-Swedish racists in this forum than Swedish ones. All of them decide on behalf of Swedes and lecture us that how Sweden should do this and that. One of them which is very apparent in his racism is "Eurostan" who is actualy an Indian guy who happened to stay in Sweden for some months!!
