'I fell for her beautiful blue eyes'

Princess Madeleine and fiancé Jonas Bergström revealed on Tuesday that their decision to wed came in June when the future duke went down on one knee during a holiday on the Italian island of Capri.

The couple were staying at the idyllic Villa San Michele when Borgström popped the question.

"I went down on one knee and proposed," Bergström told members of the press gathered at the royal family's Solliden residence on the island of Öland.

"And I said, 'Of course I want to," Princess Madeleine added.

Asked what had attracted them to each other, Borgström replied:

"I fell for her beautiful blue eyes and her wonderful laugh."

Princess Madeleine also praised Borgström's peepers, assets she had noticed the first time they met.

"He's also the nicest person in the world, a wonderful friend," she said.

Princess Madeleine wore an apricot-coloured chiffon dress when the newly engaged couple emerged in public for the first time since their engagement was made public on Tuesday morning. Jonas Bergström appeared in a dark blue suit with a light blue shirt and blue tie and with his hair neatly parted.

The engagement celebrations began on Monday night with a crayfish party, but the real engagement dinner is planned for Tuesday evening and will be attended by both families.

Jonas Bergström said the couple planned to wed at "the end of next year or the start of 2011."

Royal Court press chief Nina Eldh said the engagement had been planned for some time and had already been approved by the king and the government.

"They've known each other a long time, and with Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling having got engaged it's nice that they're able to do the same. Love is contagious," she said.

The government officially approved the marriage plans at an extraordinary meeting held on Tuesday.

Jonas Bergström will follow in the footsteps of Daniel Westling in being made a duke after his marriage to the princess.

Bergström, who is 30-years-old, met the princess through mutual friends in the autumn of 2002.

Bergström grew up in Djursholm outside of Stockholm. His father Claes runs two successful construction companies. Jonas also has two older brothers - Ted and Peder.

Jonas Bergström graduated from Danderyd's high school in 1999 with top grades and completed a law degree at Stockholm University in 2006. He is currently working as a lawyer at the prestigious Stockholm firm Vinge.

Indeed, love is contagious. The Crown Princess is a good example to Her younger Siblings. I bet it's only a short while before we hear some good news from the Prince.

Long life and great happiness to the charming couple. And, yes, she does have beautiful blue eyes!
00:10 August 12, 2009 by Nutcracker
There certainly are some sad little trolls out today. Most people just smile at the sight or news of a happy, newly engaged couple, whether the pair are royalty or 'proletariat'. Cheer up, guys, there's bound to be someone out there, just get off your computers and out into the world.

Falling for one's beautiful eyes could just be a

"figure of speech" which is very romantic. I am quite sure that Jonas Bergstrom has fell in love with other qualites that the pricess possessed.

I admire him, he finished law school and even came to New York to gain (other experiences of law) ba before emparking on marriage. Splendid I wish them

I wish them a bright future. He will be a valuable asset to Sweeden, "Three Cheers!!

I must admit; I fell for her enormous bank balance. It was short lived however when she fell for Jonas Bergström's magnificent hair parting!

@Nutcracker, as a tax paying Swede, I have the right to show my discontent that my hard earned money will go to pay for another wedding of the so called upperbreed.

I see they've done the same make-over on him for the photocall that they did on Daniel. Awful, awful double blue double breasted suit with handkerchief in pocket, nasty black slip on loafers, dadglasses and hair brylcreemed so it looks exactly like the King's used to. No-one outside of the royal court dresses like that.
12:28 August 12, 2009 by peropaco
Jasoncarter, Loads of Swedes still greese up their hair like that. Particularly if you hang out in Östermalm/Stureplan area and want to portrait certain image. Ostermalmgubbe or Gubbstrutt.....

The king will pay for it.

...and who may I ask, pays him?

He has income from shares and also is wealthy. The apanage goes to maintaining the castles and pay employers etc.

Like that of a w#&ker!

I agree. Daniel now looks like a twat. I don't see the Danish princes doing the same, or the British. Daniel's hair was nice before.
15:42 August 12, 2009 by Paddy
The British one's don't have any hair!
16:52 August 12, 2009 by skane refugee
:-) well said Paddy! :-)

Charles is continuing the long and proud tradition of Royal British 'slapheads' ... but is the tradition safe with Dianas boys?

... agree for the 'heir' ... but what about the 'spare'?!?

If they did a paternity test I don't reckon Charles would make the top 3 in the 'Paddypower' betting ;o)

I met a lot of Swedens tax exiles in London back in the day ... pretty much all the blokes greased their hair back as a badge of being a member of the Swedish 'elite' (their view ... not mine ;o) ) ... far removed from the 'medelsvenssons' they so despised back home

... I tried repeatedly to point out that 'Wall Street the Movie' was a satire and out of date when filmed ...

... but it looks like a certain type of Swedish bloke is still at it ... Tw@s to a man ... even by local standards ... and that ... ladies and gentlemen ... is a very high hurdle indeed ;o)

What big nose?
11:58 August 14, 2009 by Hedley
"Blue eyes"? blue, hazel and green are too common in Sweden, therefore that physical attribute is really non important, I think that the most important feature are mentioned by the princess. Madeleine statement sound more logical to me: "He's also the nicest person in the world, a wonderful friend," Her answer sound more interesting. I am a man, but I have learn (by the hard way) that physical attributes are very misguiding in order to select a good or bad couple. Psychological characteristics are more important, because they tell you who really is your partner. In my opinion, we the men are not as smart as women (I know some exceptions).

Although people relate marriage with bearing children... that is a very big mistake... Angelina Jolie and Brat Pitt are a good example of about love itself within a family.

Was that a typo or a character appraisal? ;o)
