Sharp rise in cases of gonorrhea among women

Published: 13 Aug 09 18:01 CET | Print version
Online: http://www.thelocal.se/21456/20090813/

The number of cases of gonorrhea among women in Sweden for the first six months of 2009 was up 31 percent on the same period last year, according to new figures from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (Smittskyddsinstitutet).

But despite the increase among women, men remain more likely to be infected with the sexually transmitted disease.

In the first half of the year, 155 case were reported for heterosexual men, representing a drop of seven percent. For gay men, the decline was more marked, with 26 percent fewer cases of the disease than for the same period last year.

In total, 725 cases of gonorrhea were reported in Sweden last year, an increase of 13 percent compared to 2007. Almost half those infected were aged 20 to 29.

Gonorrhea is primarily spread through heterosexual intercourse or gay sex between two men. Cases of women infecting each other are extremely rare.

I think is high time people realised that sex is risky as sexually transmitted diseases can be contacted just like that. I still think people should go for check up regularly to know their status which will prevent further spread of the disease. The use of condom should be a must. It is so sad that people just have sex without thinking of later consequences. Infectious Disease Department should create more awareness by organising symposium for the public either through the media or what ever. HIV is real, sexually transmitted diseases is also real. Every one should be responsible for their health by taking precautionary measures against it.

Nobody appreciate it, but this bug is a cool bug! You can not do a vaccine, since it has amazing ways to evade immune system!

I am really concern about it, so I hope to do good project in order to eradicate it, because it does not have any other reservoir besides humans. If you eliminate humans carriers and sick people (of course treating them with antibiotics), that noise bug could disappear...

Hedley,....."" If you eliminate humans carriers and sick people (of course treating them with antibiotics), that noise bug could disappear""

By eliminate,I hope you dont mean kill them all off,......

although I suppose it might do the trick.
04:39 August 14, 2009 by Hedley
@jack sprat

Of course killing is legal anywhere, as long as you kill bugs, not people. Infected people can be treated with antibiotics and "voluntary" isolation of sex meanwhile he/she is receiving drugs.

This bug is very clever, sex is the best way for spreading!!!

The real meaning of sex is to get the best genes for my offsprings!

Humans are animals (not plants, bacteria or fungi!) and we are ruled by animal rules (rules for eating, housing, killing, parentering, even sex)!

Monogamy in animals (although it is not strict) depends on male-female monomorphism! humans lack of this important feature (beginning with his/hers voice, skeleton shape, breast, subcutaneous fat, etcetera). Hypocrisy (ignorance of these rules) helps the bugs for the spreading of every STI (Sexual transmitted infection).

I heard you can get it from drinking to much coffee and eating chocolate...

This comes as no surprise to anyone. Most people I know in Sweden do have unprotected sex with perfect strangers any giving night of the week. I heard that barefeet and rather uneducated people in the third world are more aware of the risk of contacting disease from unprotected sex than the average Swedsson.

i'm with peropaco. i don't wanna offend anybody, in fact, i realy like a lot of things from swedes and europeans in general i would never find in a lot of people from my country, but when I first came to europe one of the surprising thing was that a lot of people didn't care about the condom.

I am afraid you are RIGHT. I have seen lots of ads and campaigns in Eastern Europe, India, SE Asia, Greece and Spain on HIV, STDs all the time when I was traveling there. I hardly saw any campaign like that in Sweden. Average people in Sweden are too relaxed about this issue. In fact condoms are very expensive. In S. Africa and some countries you can get them for free and elsewhere they are quite cheap. In a way Swedes are not so scared partly because they know that if they get sick they will get help nevertheless. So it is difficult to scare them with death like in Africa and other parts of the world. I am amazed that there are still many that have multiple partners but don't practice safe sex.

Referring to earlier articles on Swedish dating culture, it seems that 'intimate' communication between the genders is not common without the consumption of alcohol to lower inhibitions, unfortunately that also impedes judgement, reasoning and rational thinking.
12:22 August 14, 2009 by Linuschibros
In sweden, condom is not in peoples dictionary, they believe in having fun to the fullest. Nobody is expects to buy condom since its expensive and no subsidy as well to make it cheaper for the fun players. Secondly, people don't think of using condom since the only path way they have to have fun is by getting drunk and by getting drunk to have morale, u will never think of using condom since the person is under the influence of alcohol and end up committing him/herself and then help in distributing the unperishable free goods.

Thinking that Africa has the highest rate of AIDS, you might be deceiving yourself because the open minded Africa saw the existence of it and seek for other continents help and consent and now its reducing rapidly unlike here we all are blind folded about it and we think it doesn't exists rather you stand more chances of contacting it here.

Make use of your condom, don't ruin the rest of your life because of 30 minutes fun.
00:33 August 16, 2009 by Typical Whitey
This is God's way (or if you are an atheist, nature's way) of telling people to not have sex until married - and be faithful to each other. STD's can ruin your life forever. Not worth the 30 minutes of fun.
11:59 August 16, 2009 by Miss Kitten
^

I think this is rather God/Nature's way of telling us to use condoms until we find a monogamous partner and then to stay monogamous.

What does Mikael Gorbachev and a Swedish girl on vacation have in common?

They both got screwed by 10 guys.

What's the difference?

Gorbachev knew their names.

Lemme guess...these people don't have relationships, they just have sex, right? I knew it all along.
