Sweden Democrats gain in new voter poll

Sweden’s centre-left opposition parties maintain a slight lead over the governing centre-right Alliance parties, while the far-right Sweden Democrats have enough support to gain a seat in the Riksdag, according to a new poll.

According to the latest poll of voter sympathies carried out by the Sifo polling firm, the red-green parties have support from 48.1 percent of the voters, while the four Alliance parties together garner 45.2 percent.

But if the election were held today, the Sweden Democrats, which have crossed the four-percent threshold, would be the kingmakers.

Support for the Sweden Democrats rose from 3.1 percent to 4.2 percent, giving them the ability to tip the scales of power in a Swedish parliament where the two main political blocs are only separated by 2.9 percent, according to the Sifo poll.

Both the Social Democrats and Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt of the Moderate Party, however, have said repeatedly that neither party has any plans to cooperated with the Sweden Democrats or become dependent on them to form a coalition.

In a statement regarding the Sifo poll results, the prime minister said that support for the Sweden Democrats would likely drop when the 2010 parliamentary election campaign heats up and that both blocs plan on moving ahead with platforms lacking input from the Sweden Democrats.

For the most part, Reinfeldt didn’t want to comment on possibility of the Sweden Democrats being kingmakers or other theories about possible partnership with the party.

“I don’t want to give them any unnecessary attention,” he said.

According to political scientist Sören Holmberg, Swedish democracy may be in for a “difficult situation” if the Sweden Democrats end up as the party that could give either political bloc a majority in the Riksdag.

“We may have a thorny discussion about what sort of influence the Sweden Democrats can have in Swedish politics. But we should also be reminded that the government doesn’t need to resign [if it’s unable to achieve a majority],” he told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

“There needs to be a majority for a no-confidence vote and then the opposition and the Sweden Democrats would have to support it.”

The poll results were published on Sunday in the Göteborgs-Posten, Svenska Dagbladet, and Skånska Dagbladet newspapers.

The results come from responses given by 1,911 people who were asked between August 10th and 20th to say which party they would vote for if Sweden’s parliamentary elections were held today.

The parties’ figures are given below in percentages, with changes from the previous poll given in parentheses.

Social Democrats: 32.8 percent (no change); Moderates: 27.6 (-0.6 percent); Green Party: 9.2 percent (+0.7); Liberal Party (Folkpartiet): 6.8 (-2.0); Left Party: 6.1 (+0.9); Centre Party: 6.1 (+1.1); Christian Democrats: 4.7 (+0.5); Sweden Democrats: 4.2 (+1.1).

Aren't these polls supposed to have +-3% error? So why do you make a news about 1% increase or decrease?! These small fluctuations are very normal and they don't mean anything.

Great SD, keep on going, you are the only change this country have…
13:46 August 23, 2009 by UKLady
For the most part, Reinfeldt didn't want to comment on possibility of the Sweden Democrats being kingmakers or other theories about possible partnership with the party.

"I don't want to give them any unnecessary attention," he said.

Err, you don't need to give them any attention Reinfeldt - they are gathering enough voters and creating their own attention without needing help from you or other parties in Sweden.

When are people going to see that their popularity is rising (albeit slowly) because segments of the population are unhappy. Whether thats because they are disgruntled with the actions and results of the major alliances/parties or whether they support the SD policies is yet to be seen.

Don't think we will see where this leads until elections.

@iraniboy

i wonder what job you are doing in sweden.this is not iran to have +-3% error. i am quite sure that error will be around

+-.25 percentage. 1 percent increase is a big diference. they calculate almost exactly. i saw it in EU elections some month back.

So.. well it is very interesting (and horrifying) to see that the ultra nationalistic racist party has such strong support from western immigrants. At least I can (and will) blame you if they get into parliament.

If you want to vote for.. "ppl" like these please go to another country where a party like this one has already been in parliament and tainted it. Go to e.g. Britain (BNP), Holland (?) or Finland (?). In Sweden no such party has had any power yet, please don't change that.. we hate them.. If it matters at all for you remember that this is the party that neo nazis support and all voters can easily influence their parties.

We have big problems with immigration but this party isn't a good solution. Please..

Rock on SD you got my vote and many others in the construction field.
16:13 August 23, 2009 by Iraniboy
@Leprehcaun

That's sadly true and strange!! Apparently near all pro racist/fascist in this forum are not Swede or have newly become a Swede. Why is it so? Playmaker, Eurostan, Antonlgj,pepe... Now I start to believe that it's better to tighten immigration policies in Sweden to confront racists to enter Sweden! :D
16:21 August 23, 2009 by here for the summer
leprehcaun where do you come up with this stuff .. absolutely nothing in the SD party is racist. Then this baseless neo nazi charge . Then you are saying that the BNP and the Finish and Neatherlands ( Holland ) govs are racist too ..
17:15 August 23, 2009 by Leprehcaun
@ here for.. no just sigh.. you're so draining.

Please read it.. sigh.. again.. I never called the party a neo nazi party, I said that neo nazis support it... maybe you've misinterpreted it.. it's like this: "The question isn't whether all muslims are terrorists, it's whether all terrorists are muslims." Here however it is, all Sweden Democrats aren't nazis but all nazis are Sweden Democrats.

I didn't say the the governments of those countries are racist, I said that those countries have racist parties, like e.g. the BNP in Britain and whatever their counterparts are in the other two and several, if not all, other European countries.

I am definitely saying that SD is a racist party. They (the majority) hate because of skin color, not because of the individual. Ever heard their slogan? "Go home!"?

'Olaf Palme...we need you now more than ever to lead us to believe that we are the...Moral Superpower"

That was the Sweden I knew, but his death brought an end of innocense to the country. We had a similiar Prime Minister like Palme with Pierre Trudeau who was from the same era. Both were idealists with a world vision. The world misses both those guys but I'm not totally sure either of them would be right for the job in today's world..
20:42 August 23, 2009 by DreEstwd
1.1% of the Swedish population just woke up. Now it's time for more people to do the same. Maybe then we won't have to see Arab and African immigrants hitting on little 13 year old Swedish girls like I've seen 4 times this week. If SD takes power and follows through with some of the things that they promise, I will bet my entire year's salary that rapes and murders go down. No doubt about it.
22:31 August 23, 2009 by Playmaker
@leprehcaun, i dont get it. you call us racist because of the dislike (hate) for islam (muslims) but WHAT RACE IS ISLAM? as far as i know they have no skin color they come in all colors. i belive that indonesia has more muslims then any other countries. i would like to help all the infidiels in the middle east and around the world. if iraniboy is a non muslim then i welcome him and his family. the "right wing" movement is gaining in the EU and i pray that Geert Wilders becomes the next PM.Allah willing

ablahabalahabalahabla-hab

Sigh.

Let me (sort of) quote (myself), "the MAJORITY is racist".

I am so f-ing sick and tired of ppl who don't read what i say. It's like; "some ppl don't do their homework" and someone responds, "why are you saying that no one does their homework? Why are you lying?"

Anyway to go on. I said that "they" (talking about that majority, if it isn't obvious) "hate because of SKIN COLOR" (NOT because of religion or anything else). You are sort of right though, the rest aren't racists, they just hate all Muslims. I hate Islam, but I hate all major religions except for buddhism. Islam is in a class of its own though.

This party however gets lots of support from the absolutely worst people in the country and will therefore be influenzed by them. A neo nazi is a whole lot more likely to get a political interest in this party than you because he hates, he has a personal gain, he REALLY wants to get certain things down, driven by anger and hate, very strong motivators and will therefore push policies of his liking. All parties are influenced heavily by their various activists. SD has mostly bad ones. That's why I'm afraid of them and that's why I want to be able to say, Sweden is one of very very few countries where these people has never had power, has never had the chance to push their.. extreme agendas.

I have read what you post. I read what you posted in the STD story where you say you hope those confused boys who thought and STD was a sign of manhood would get HIV. Who is the moral voice. Social Democrats are not racists nor extreme. Perhaps it is you that is the extremist.
22:14 August 24, 2009 by Leprehcaun
Really? I'm an extremist? How f-ing long did it take you to figure that out? It's ppl like you who made me into one. I used to be the Swedish stereotype. Sigh..

Sure I almost never mean what I say when I say extreme things but that's the noyl way to get 1d1ots, nationalists, racists, brainwashed people etc etc to listen. Oh and it feels REALLY good to make a-holes, 1d1ots and all other people I hate look even more of it (just please, reread the sentence until you understand the content, cause you're bound to get it wrong, call me something I'm and then my less than pleasant responses and so on and on and on and on again and again..).

Now you need to listen. I am a social democrat and I have never said anything about the social democrats being.. this makes me laugh considering what they, we, are.. extremists. I am talking about the SWEDEN DEMOCRATS, abbreviated SD.

I repeat; I am NOT talking about the SOCIAL democrats, I am talking about the SWEDEN democrats. Look at the headline.. and read my f-ing comment just one more time.. jeeze you people give me headaches. No wonder you people never seem to read what I write. Ridiculous. Now I'm gonna take an alvedon, pretend people like you can't under any circumstances get into the country, pretend that I have never met or know of any people like you.. basically I'll pretend I'm 14 and liberal and mentally blue eyed again and go to sleep. Oh and I want to thank you and everyone even slightly like you for opening my eyes about you other so called "westerners". Now go beat up your kid (for the record I REALLY DON'T mean that, it's extreme sarcasm) and pray to your god. Have a very bad night.

who can argue with this ?
07:44 August 25, 2009 by Leprehcaun
Exactly.

"The critical ingredient of a safe, harmonic, solid and supportive society is the common identity, which in turn requires a high degree of ethnic and cultural uniformity amongst the people. From this, it follows that the nationalist principle, the principle of one state, one nation, is absolutely fundamental to the Sweden Democrats' political values. The nationalist principle is based on the concept of the nation state, that the territorial boundaries of the state shall coincide with its demographic boundaries. In its ideal form, such a society is therefore ethnically homogenous."

It's an ultra-nationalistic ethnocentric racist party. Just imagine the side effects if they got power. The brainwashing, the nationalism, the racism and the ethnocentrism. We would become a tiny USA (hey, so much for being conservative (oho another thing their version of Sweden would have in common with the US) about the Swedish system and the country, HA). The fright. The justifications of treating other people bad for being different.. it can't be allowed to happen. But it will if you vote for them. DON'T vote for them.
17:10 August 25, 2009 by Beynch
No Swede, of sound mind, should be surprised over SD's progress. The long ruling, marxist, Social Democrats have only themselves to blame. Their aggressive efforts to liberalize immigration, and social services, entitlements are now back firing, whereas in fact the Social Democrats, in their infinite wisdom, had hoped that it would render them more votes. The Swedes are saddened at seeing their country being islamisized beyond recognition, Mey the Social Democrats suffer, severely, at the polls in 2010. This despite the fact the Sweden indeed needs immigration to even remotely sustain her future. The issue is not immigration. It is the unbridled, out-of-control, open-gate policy.
11:32 August 26, 2009 by rumcajs
I'm 200% with leprehcaun. 1- In the very best case (which I doubt) they would fix the immigration problem in a fare maner, but they would f..k up a lot other things. 2- U guys are immigrants too. What the hell makes you think you have more rights than the other immigrants? 3- If sweden should stop immigration, it'd be in fact western immigration cos it's the one that's bringing the worst crap...ultra-nationalistic ethnocentric AND RACIST s..t in other plpl's land. The Arabs at least cook well. If you wanna make a fascist country, YOU go back to your countries and do it there. 4- I don't even think you've got a clue about all this. Did you even go to school??? Hitler, Franco, Pinochet, etc.. would you like to live in a place like the ones they ruled??? This is not a video game, so please, read and think a little bit before you do and/or say anything stupid.
10:47 October 18, 2009 by Jan-Bug
There is always a reason to why people "jump" over to another party. There IS a reason to how a party like the SD are founded in the first place. Has anyone reflected over that I wonder? Swedish citizen have lost their faith in the sitting government. They lost their faith in the previous government too. And they simply see no change in the future with all these corrupt a-holes in charge.
08:27 October 21, 2009 by UKLady
Siiiigh, yet again the minute some wish to discuss why a far-right political party are gaining in votes, they are immediately called racist and should go back to their own racist countries.

Blah blah yawn yawn.

I moved here by choice, have assimilated into the country, work, pay taxes and take nothing from the State (i.e. Swedish peoples money).

I have a right to discuss and state my opinions like any other member of this country.

If screaming racist at me makes you feel better and helps you to deny seeing that the SD party is gaining in popularity so be it.

Nowhere in my post did I say I supported them - merely stated that there was growing support and wondered why that was.

Some here should read posts before posting knee-jerk typical lefty do-gooding, "the world is perfect" and everyone who challenges anything is automatically a troublemaker, racist, immigrant themselves yada yada.

Some really do need to wake up and smell the coffee.
16:38 October 22, 2009 by mike0017
I found this article with a link from another one (I like how The Local links relevant articles together), and I must say the comments are nothing short of hilarious. As an American, I'm amazed at how many of you Swedes seem to have no concept of what the term 'Racist' actually means. #18 linked that statement from the SD and called it "ultra-nationalistic ethnocentric racist" while it is ethnocentric(not a bad thing) it is no no way ultra-nationalistic or racist. In fact it seemed to be based entirely on common sense. I suggest you get a dictionary and look up the definition of the word racist.

I also noticed how no one commented on what #12 said. I suspect because it's true and all the leftists are secretly seething that he would even dare to mention it. I've seen and read about how Swedish girls are regularly called whores and harassed simply for having blonde hair in a heavily ethnic minority area. As well as the fact that even Fox news over here in America did a short bit on how parts of Malmo resembles the third world.

Frankly I'd be ashamed of anyone who DIDN'T vote for the SD. If you bring the third world to live in Sweden, they bring the third world with them. Though I suppose if you Swedes want to live in a place resembling Baghdad, that's entirely up to you.
