Bank explodes in Malmö smash and grab raid

A bank cash dispenser on Södra Förstadsgatan in Malmö exploded at 5am on Monday morning in an apparent smash and grab robbery attempt.

At around the same time a truck forced entry into an electronics shop on Handelsgatan in Jägersro and police believe that the two events could be connected.

"At three minutes to five we received several calls about a powerful explosion on Södra Förstadsgatan. Eight minutes after five we got an alarm about a truck having been forced through the entry of an electronics store in Jägersro," Cindy Schönström-Larsson at Skåne police confirmed.

It is as yet unclear if anything was stolen in the attacks but a report in the Aftonbladet newspaper indicates that the interior of the branch of Handelsbanken has been left severely damaged.

"The whole bank is in bits," an eye witness told the newspaper.

A police unit arrived at the scene at 5.45am and after securing the area they immediately set up a cordon in order to conduct a technical examination.

As a result of the police cordon bus services were forced to redirect at the Bergsgatan junction with Södervärn.

Police have confirmed that goods of an unknown value were stolen from the store in Jägersro and that the truck used in the attack had been previously reported stolen.
