A bank cash dispenser on Södra Förstadsgatan in Malmö exploded at 5am on Monday morning in an apparent smash and grab robbery attempt.

At around the same time a truck forced entry into an electronics shop on Handelsgatan in Jägersro and police believe that the two events could be connected.

"At three minutes to five we received several calls about a powerful explosion on Södra Förstadsgatan. Eight minutes after five we got an alarm about a truck having been forced through the entry of an electronics store in Jägersro," Cindy Schönström-Larsson at Skåne police confirmed.

It is as yet unclear if anything was stolen in the attacks but a report in the Aftonbladet newspaper indicates that the interior of the branch of Handelsbanken has been left severely damaged.

"The whole bank is in bits," an eye witness told the newspaper.

A police unit arrived at the scene at 5.45am and after securing the area they immediately set up a cordon in order to conduct a technical examination.

As a result of the police cordon bus services were forced to redirect at the Bergsgatan junction with Södervärn.

Police have confirmed that goods of an unknown value were stolen from the store in Jägersro and that the truck used in the attack had been previously reported stolen.

Swedes seem very violent people.

I am really curious from what data you have made that extrapolation? Sound very scientific |-O

Police got calls at three minutes to five, and the police unit arrived the scene at 5:45 AM. Interesting.

I also would like to know how this incident actually warrants the Swede's being labelled as violent.

I am English and I have lived in Malmo for almost 1 year. I feel safer walking the streets at night here than I ever did in my home town of Warrington. These sort of things are very rare here... not like England where it is almost the norm!!!

Please get your facts right before labelling people as violent when they are far from it.

Police were busy working their night shift -- grabbing the stuff from the electronics shop and the ATM, leaving the scene in the truck, changing their clothes, and then arriving to the same place in their police cars. 40 minutes is a pretty fast result for relaxed Swedes, I guess.

fazoolmein...you beat me to it. Central Malmö and it takes over 45 mins to respond to "...several calls about a powerful explosion..."? Shocking.

This is definitely done by an organised gang. And Swedes? Perhaps, or they could be from any part of Europe (Hello Schengen). We've had to up the security since we opened the borders to not become an easy target for foreign criminals. It's worked for the most part. This crime could very well be from home-grown criminals.

''I am English and I have lived in Malmo for almost 1 year. I feel safer walking the streets at night here than I ever did in my home town of Warrington. These sort of ''

To be fair, and im from London, there is a lot going down in Malmö right now, far more than in warrington im sure.

You can read something about criminal activity in Malmö every day in the papers. I think we are used to small crimes happening often in the UK where as here in Sweden, the crimes are not so often but far more serious. Bombings, murders, 10 cars set on fire and a bank machince being blown up have all happened over the last 2 weeks!

I did read somewhere that the organised crime down in the south of Sweden is due to Denmarks problem with the same issure and it has spread over the bridge into Sweden?

I'm really really hoping that The Local got their information wrong and that it didn't really take the police over 45 minutes to get to the scene. If true, that's just downright scary, and pathetic. Maybe I don't feel so safe living in Sweden anymore.
20:39 August 24, 2009 by Greg in Canada
There didn't seem to be a lot of violent crime in Sweden back in the 1970's and early 80's when I was over there. There was always petty stuff like break and enters or vandalism, but very little violence. I always thought Sweden then was very safe, but so also was the UK back then.

The Swedish police seem to have a bit of a "Keystone cops" image. Perhaps its because they never had to handle the increased violence until the last 10-15 yrs.

its rediculous the comments i see you,am not sure how beacuse of little bank theft and electronics shop.everyone is cryig out for safety in malmo.atlease travel to chicago in the states or probably travel to africa or any arab nations.you can not stay for hours.sweden has been one of the safest place place have lived with low crim rates.

Gee, it is very scary to see so many crimes happening in Malmö. It describes the level of employment and social status in this little town. Well, Sweden was famous to have a peaceful environment with low crime rates in the world but I guess not anymore and it has been changed so much since I moved back to Canada.

This woke me up :< We ran out on the balcony to check our garage and the cars we thought it was right downstairs. Were on the other side of Amiralsgaten from it so it must have been 10 times louder where it happened.

And I find living in Malmö the 2nd worse place Ive lived in. Lived in Luton for 2 years that was pretty unsafe but apart from that lived in villages. Don't like going anywhere here on my own at night.
