Italy’s foreign minister, Franco Frattini, says he has met with his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt to iron out a strategy for resolving the fallout from an article published in the Aftonbladet newspaper, which reported allegations that the Israeli army harvested the organs of dead Palestinians, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

But in a farcical twist, Bildt has denied that the two discussed the crisis or the Italian's proposed solution.

Frattini told the newspaper he has met with Bildt, and the two agreed that at a meeting of European Union foreign ministers later this week, they will work to pass a resolution making it clear that the EU, under the Swedish presidency, strongly condemns anti-Semitism and will take action against any manifestation of it on the continent.

Frattini said he intends to demand that the meeting's summary statement explicitly condemn the article published in Aftonbladet. He said his proposed statement would declare articles of this sort to be "acts of blatant anti-Semitism."

"There are limits to freedom of the press that stem from respect for the truth and the duty of every journalist to prove his claims," Frattini told Haaretz.

Frattini added that the accusations made in the Aftonbladet article are "terrible conclusions, lying and hurtful, and they have the power to assist all those who seek to incite against Jews or who oppose the existence of the State of Israel."

However, Frattini defended Sweden’s position to refuse to condemn either the article or the newspaper: "The state cannot intervene in the work of the press. The journalists are the ones who must set limits for themselves and must find the right balance within the framework of the journalistic code of behavior."

Frattini said that the Council of Ministers, which is scheduled to discuss the situation in the Middle East later this week in Stockholm, is the proper forum "for Sweden to prove, with concrete steps, its determined stance against anti-Semitism. It would be better for the Swedish response to be expressed there than via a government communique to the press."

However, in a further twist to this diplomatic crisis that swings from the bad to the farcical, Bildt – in Kabul for talks with international representatives and Afghan officials – has flatly denied that he and Frattini even discussed Sweden’s standoff with Israel, according to the Swedish news agency TT.

Through the foreign ministry’s head of communications, Cecilia Julin, Bildt denied that he and Frattini had discussed the disagreement between Sweden and Israel over the Aftonbladet article, or that they had discussed a possible resolution by the Council of Ministers.

“From the Swedish side we have no plans to handle this question through the informal foreign ministers’ meeting in Stockholm,” said Julin. She also conveyed that Bildt had suggested that the proposal must have arisen through an “Italian misunderstanding.”

Meanwhile, it is not clear whether the Italian initiative would even satisfy Israel, which remains publicly incensed at Sweden’s refusal to condemn the Aftonbladet article published on August 17th. While the Israel Prime Minister's office was not commenting on the proposal, the Foreign Ministry appeared to dismiss the proposal as irrelevant to the present crisis between the two countries.

"Every initiative against anti-Semitism is welcome," said Yigal Palmor, a ministry spokesman. "But if the declaration is general and does not specifically relate to the article in Aftonbladet, it will not resolve anything.”

"We did not ask for an apology, or for measures against the newspaper or the journalist. All we asked of Sweden and the Swedes is that they reject and decry the content of the report. And our position has not changed," he added.

what is ahppening now is a lot of political silliness and posturing. The Swedish government has shown its true colors as well as totally botched handling this matter. The Israelis over reacted. Assuming no truth to the Aftonbladet article ( which appears to be the case so far ), Israel should have used humor and mockery to humiliate the newspaper and Swedish government officials acting so hypocritically. Huffing and puffing only raises the backs of the journalistic and government clowns.

is anyone taking aftonbladet to court in Sweden?

there's a case in the States as I understand it ... but with limited chance of success because the plaintiff hasn't been directly affected or maligned by the article ...

when the Mirror tabloid reported a false and sensationalist story about British army torture of Iraqis ... they were eventually forced to print a front page retraction and abject apology ... and lost their editor Piers Morgan ...

would love a court case ... if the aftonbladet allegations are true then the Israeli army has a lot of explaining to do ... if the allegations are false then Aftonbladet needs to publish a full retraction and apology and lose key members of their editorial staff ...

simple solution

Great that the following is being implemented.

"...will work to pass a resolution making it clear that the EU, under the Swedish presidency, strongly condemns anti-Semitism and will take action against any manifestation of it on the continent."

Now.. what about a resolution making it clear that anti-arabism and anti-muslimism is also "strongly condemned"?

Just read the majority of posts here at The Local on this 'aftonbladet' issue to see that such racist sentiments are rampant.

"...will work to pass a resolution making it clear that the EU, under the Swedish presidency, strongly condemns Antisemitism and will take action against any manifestation of it on the continent."

Antisemitism is one word.. not a hyphenated word.. But if the EU wants to be looked upon seriously then the proper word to use would be bigotry because in all seriousness until bigotry is wiped out there will be issues such as this all over the world.

Should the EU condemn every speculating newspaper article that could be construed as offensive to any ethnic group? Or does that little limitation of the freedom of the press just apply when it comes to Israel?
16:04 August 31, 2009 by juancho
What a big confusion....!!!

So that yellow press, lack of transparency, irresponsibility or unfaithfulness, translated to zionist fanatic language means "antisemitism".

Give any charge to Aftonbladet but antisemitism.

OMG! Looks like the Zionists went to cry out lound like little girls in Italy and used the now well known victimisation rouage in Italy, remembering how Mussolini and the Italians sent Zoos in gaz chambers. ohhhh!

There was nothing bad in the Aftonbladet's article, and I hope Swedish officials will stand up for democracy, not for theocracy Israel, sick lobbying and victimisation.

Re freedom of speech: All Danish newspapers (and worldwide media, actually) are under threat from the latest instance of Islamic "lawfare": a Saudi law firm (founded by Yamani, former Saudi minister who engineered '73 oil embargo), has sent a letter to Danish newspapers 'demanding' that they print an apology on their front pages for reprinting Mohand cartoons (no mention of the 3 the imams in Denmark drew up in order to create a false controversy); that the Danes promise never to reprint them OR to publish anything about Mohamad. The letter threatens reprisals against Danish economic interests. This is a serious attempt by Moslems to silence all free speech and especially to prevent the facts about Mo and Islam itself getting wider public knowledge; it's part of ongoing 'lawfare' (legal jihad) in Canadian & British courts to silence free speech International Free Press Society has the letter's text and details: http://www.internationalfreepresssociety.org/2009/08/law-firm-hired-to-intimidate-danish-and-world-media/

this news paper is one of the best in the world about telling the truth.aftonbladet got the document to prove how right it is,but just imagine if the paper proves and shows some documents what s gone happen????

now is turn of zionist mafia to criticize our loved newspaper. zionists are trying hard to condemn this news paper. iv heard some jews want to buy the paper, i just dont know how right is this.if they buy ?so guess what ?they will print every thing in favour of israel like many of the news papers in the west!

i just dont know what this got to do to italy. one advice for zionist ,leave this paper and sweden alone. we are having enough of israel.you just carry on building your towers in the occupied lands of innocent people, who god by mistake had put in the so called holy land or its better to say land of zionist criminals.

It seems that now even Sweden is under-threat from Israel pressure in one or the other way, just as many of the muslim countries are the victims of Israel.

Sweden be aware.
19:59 August 31, 2009 by peropaco
@Kelvision and Browneyes10, Dont worry about the Jews. We already have enough problems with criminal elements running rampant in Uppsala, Malmö and Götheborg and I sure you will not find one Israeli or Jew amongst them ;-)

LOL. Franco Frattini. A conservative Christian who calls himself "Israel's best friend in Europe." He's a hardcore zionist whose main aim is to "improve EU-Israel relations." He also deems "global terrorism" to be the main threat in the world and calls for harsh censorship to be able to battle this terrorism.

You expect us to listen to this guy?! Keep going strong Bildt!

the swedes will not condemn the article. it is now a matter of national honour to stand behind the 'israelis- the snatchers of bodies' articles.

well now we in israel can burn the swedish flag and call them nazis without remorse. at least this benefit arise from the event.

how can the swedish poeple can be so stupid? is it in their "blood"? are they realy ready to lose their dignity only to defend their interest with the islamic world that will plant bombs in their subways the next opportunity even if 1000 mosques are built in oslo?

swedes, i call you to understand. in extremist islamic eyes you will be regarded ( including women and children) as infidels that should be converted or killed even if you try to be very very nice . it doesnt work as in your deluded fantasies.

An condemnation of the article by the Swedish Government wont make the media wet their pants. They can take it. They are not made of sugar and some rain wouldn´t hurt them. It's only words after all and the strength of freedom of press in Sweden won´t scare any reasonable person about the prospect about a dictatorship. If a condemnation would prevent violence against Jews and Israel in the long run then the Swedish government should step up, take responsibility and make one.
20:52 August 31, 2009 by peropaco
@Johan, more like if something would escalate that would cause violence against the Jews and Israelis the Swedish government and most of its people would provide weapons through the back doors to kill them all. That has been their track record after all.
21:53 August 31, 2009 by israeli
to put things in context, let us compare the state of things in sweden comparing to israel, and we shall see why is it that the swedes freak out lately/ it doesnt say life is better in israel than in seden now, but it clarifies the trend to come: GDP growth forcast for 2009- sweden (-5.2%) israel 0% ( as for 20/8/2009both) unemployment rate 2009 - sweden 9% israel 8%

tax burden ( % of GDP) - sweden 47.8% israel 39%

suicide rate (per 100,000) - sweden 13.3 israel 6.2

let's not forget that sweden has no enemies, no real problems,no big defense budget, they have abba, ikea and volvo. nothing to fret about.

nevertheles if the trend will continue, the israeli GDP will pass that of sweden and the swedes will be left with their prozac pills. now you can understand that the swedes simply envy the success of israel with all its troubles and enemies. do you feel gloomy there in the vast ice sheets of the north?
22:48 August 31, 2009 by Kaethar
@israeli: Aha. You've got to be kidding. If anything it's the other way around. Israel knows very well that criticism from Sweden can't be brushed under the rug as easily as criticism from Arab neighbours simply because of the good reputation Sweden has. THAT is why the outcry is so huge, and the only reason why. They're using this event as a way to undermine Sweden's credibility. Well, good luck with that. :D

"how can the swedish poeple can be so stupid? is it in their "blood"? are they realy ready to lose their dignity only to defend their interest with the islamic world that will plant bombs in their subways the next opportunity even if 1000 mosques are built in oslo?

swedes, i call you to understand. in extremist islamic eyes you will be regarded ( including women and children) as infidels that should be converted or killed even if you try to be very very nice . it doesnt work as in your deluded fantasies."

Clearly we should kill them all before they kill us. Preferably in gas chambers, since that'll save us money. :)

21:53 August 31, 2009 by israeli,

I think it's funny when you compare Sweden vs Israel. It's true that we have the 2nd highest tax burden in the world, but we do get things back from it - it's called social security. I don't know if you have heard about the global economy crises, but the figures you are talking about hit countries which depends heavily on export. It's also funny that you can mention a couple of Swedish companies, because I can't mention a single Israeli.

Sweden have 30% higher GDP per capita (PPP) than Israel.

HDI (Human Development Index)

Sweden #7,

Israel #24.

Democracy Index

Sweden #1 (9.88)

Israel #38 (7.48)

I guess that my contribution to this "mine is bigger than yours" attitude show us all why you still don't understand why the Swedish government not can comment the article.

Don't bring up the cartoons, because the minister had to resign after all that (check out Laila Freivalds).

I think you should get a life and don't look after bad influences, because you will only find more bad influences that there is.

The hate campaign that you are doing here is doing more damage to your own country than it do to us. You will only give more sympathy to the "poor" arabs by acting like a fool. It doesn't matter if the article is true or not.

My facts are from the English version of Wikipedia.
22:56 August 31, 2009 by sebseb
Israeli,

you have to understand that the entire world do not give a madam of Israel, just like every country doesn't not really care about its neigbour. The thing is that at the same time everyone cares for peace in this world and that everyone knows that we won't get it with the way Israel behaves. Israel is a theocracy, this is the final point. There is nothing worse than a theocracy like Israel which claims to be a democracy. At least, Iran doesn't claim to be a democracy. I hate hypocrisy and Israel is to me a synonym to hypocrisy. You have been unveiled.
23:07 August 31, 2009 by Hagrid
AnatoleE- Apparently, Aftonbladet was not really "speculating"... It ran the story as an uncontested fact, with zero evidence to back it up,and did not attempt to challenge it or offer a varying viewpoint. Freedom of the press is NOT the freedom to incite hatred, using baseless, fabricated accusations. Of course the media may speculate and accuse. It is actually their duty. However, the basic principle of justice states that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, that is - the burden of proof is on the accuser. If you have no evidence, you cannot accuse.

kelvison - "aftonbladet got the document to prove how right it is"

-Really? I really would love to see that! But, why is it hiding this proof for so long? Maybe because it has none?

"just imagine if the paper proves and shows some documents"

- Using the same logic: you are a Satan-worshiping, sadistic murderer. Proof? I don't have any right now... But IMAGINE I did!...

Again. If you have no evidence, you cannot accuse.

"they will print every thing in favour of israel like many of the news papers in the west!"

- Exactly! Like those ultra-Zionist BBC, the Guardian, the Independent,The NY Times,The Sunday Times, France 2,Le Figaro, Le Monde and El-Pais. Those bloody Zionists, I'm telling you, got all of them on their payroll!

juancho - Aftonbladet made a connection between an American convict and the IDF, based solely on the fact that he was Jewish (yet had no connection to Israel, and certainly never served for the IDF). This "logical leap" is classic antisemitism, as is the connection between Jews, blood and money in this story. Doesnt matter it's a yellow tabloid - say enough lies enough times and people would believe, especially those who WANT to believe, and there are plenty of them in Sweden (witness some here). Besides, I often hear that people are sick of Jews complaining of antisemitism. As if it's always whining, always victimizing themselves, never with a good reason. Well in that case, what IS antisemitism? I often wonder. Some may consider more serious violence? My take on that, is that big hatreds feed from little things. Every hate begins small, and must be nipped in the bud.

mobings - can you find me a reliable news source to verify this intriguing barking story? Because I sure as hell haven't found any. What I had no problem at all finding, however, was the story of the Palestinian father who recently lynched his own 15-year-old son for suspicion of being a collaborator. And I havent mentioned yet, all those men who murder their own daughter or sister for "defiling the family honor", i.e smiling at men. Here's a crime against humanity for you, courtesy of those oppressed innocents.

Kaethar - Oh no. Israel has an Italian friend, who wants to help it improve relations with the EU. How dreadful and vile, indeed. What's next? He's concerned about global terrorism?!... What is the world coming to?? Surely, he must be out of his mind.

This is the problem with people from highly civilized and educated country that they have always problem in their eye sights for far vision. Lolll

@israeli

you will never ever be able to compare israel to sweden in this life!? you know what you are the kind of people from begining of the time and even before that and now and in future and even after future had problems and will have.god sent jesus to guid the isralits, you know what he couldnt.he was honest and got killed.i dont know why you are afreid of honesty .even in gospel as it says there is no future for israel.in sweden we value human right,we dont put check point in every corners of every street, we have never and ever occupied any ones land, let alone killing of them,in sweden we dont say just swedish must live,we welcome almost everyone.why where ever in the world there is problem, zionist is playing a big role.so in some countries people dont accept israel as a country but sweden is the one people love because of its human and peaceful nature.

"There are limits to freedom of the press that stem from respect for the truth and the duty of every journalist to prove his claims,"

I Totally Agree!

"they have the power to assist all those who seek to incite against Jews or who oppose the existence of the State of Israel."

I totally agree! People will get murdered because of this article!

"The state cannot intervene in the work of the press. The journalists are the ones who must set limits for themselves and must find the right balance within the framework of the journalistic code of behavior."

I AGREE!!! Except I do not blame the journalist for writing this COMPLETE fiction, I blame his editors for allowing it to be printed! So what has happened at the Afton al bladet? Anyone get fired or demoted? Promoted?

*bill.lunn - "Israel should have used humor and mockery to humiliate the newspaper and Swedish government officials acting so hypocritically."

Interesting idea! I really wonder what would have happened if they had taken that approach? These ARE extremely serious charges! The FACT is that the article cannot possibly be true because you cannot take organs from dead bodies! It is so preposterous, it IS almost comical!

*mysticbumwipe - "…resolution … that anti-arabism and anti-muslimism is also "strongly condemned"?

My Arab and Persian friends, and I, TOTALLY agree with you that muslimism MUST be "strongly condemned"!

*Nutcracker - Islamic "lawfare" (legal jihad)

Amen to that brother! Thanks for the FYI.

*kelvison - "this news paper is one of the best in the world about telling the truth… imagine if the paper proves … shows some documents…"

This really is the problem because there are so many nut cases out there that have A REAL NEED to believe this article! It is impossible! Just 20 minutes of searching on the net would show you the error of your ways BUT then again, that would ruin the perfect little world you live in!
08:51 September 1, 2009 by Johan A Stock-Homer
Some commentators of this article accuse Israel or Israelis of stealing organs. They present no evidence.

That is vicious and barbarous.

Why do they do it? I guess they get a kick out of it. Their view of life supports it I guess.

I would like to live in a country that won´t allow barbarism to take a hold and prosper. I see two such countries:

Israel, because they won´t allow those who want them killed to rule their country.

China, because they treat barbarism with the tools that are smart and that works. Their strength comes from Taoism and its founding book Tao-te ching I think.

In China the barbars don´t get kicks by bullying, they are subdued. That is good.

From the article:

"However, Frattini defended Sweden's position to refuse to condemn either the article or the newspaper: 'The state cannot intervene in the work of the press. The journalists are the ones who must set limits for themselves and must find the right balance within the framework of the journalistic code of behavior.'"

Frattini never defended Sweden's position, as condemning the article's contents would not be interference in the work of the press. Freedom of the press does not mean that the government can never disagree with the press, if that were true then the government would almost never be able to express its opinions at all. Contrary to the position of the Swedish government, Frattini made clear that the contents of the article should be condemned because of its "lying and hurtful" anti-Semitic character. He merely clarified that condemning the contents of the article does not mean interfering with the press.

Freedom of the press does not revoke the freedom of speech to criticise the press.

"Meanwhile, it is not clear whether the Italian initiative would even satisfy Israel"

The Italians want to include specific mention of the Aftonbladet article's contents as an example of anti-Semitism, which is exactly what Israel would like, so I do not see what, exactly, is so "not clear" about it.

Italian govt "advising" Swedes on moral issues - now for all students of the English language, this is what we call classic irony!

My dear Sweds,

I come from Sicily, I love this country (Sweden) and all the people around me. When I travel all over the world I claim that Sweden is the best country I have ever been, and I live here right now. But I feel insulted by people like "lingonberrie", that feels the freedom to write "A Zionist would not be safe anywhere in Sicily. "... Some Swedish friends have visited me in Sicliy and simply love it and want to come back... you just speak with your prejudices... SHAME ON YOU!!! You maybe have just watched the movie "The Godfather" and believe that this is Sicily now... whoever thinks like this is just a great ignorant!

I am the first one to admit that the italian political system is horrible and made of idiots, but I do not think that you can blame somebody that suggests opinions to calm down difficult situations like that created by your beloved journal!

We have been discussing this issue back and forth and in my opinion. this is not the only litmus test for democratic Sweden , currently president of the European Union showing the way.

I think that this interview with Mr. Arne Ruth who is one of our most outstanding newspaper men ever, is a contribution to this discussion about the role and responsibility of media in creating something of a European consciousness/ public opinion - which is certainly not and cannot be said to be monolithic and in spite of that that being the case, the role of that consciousness (with conscience) in International relations:

Geronimoll,

Did you and Johnny T ever hear of this evil son of gun?

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Goebbels

Your lamentation seems to be that he did not survive to write the history of the Third Reich or post-Holocaust Europe.. and although we should not say bad things about the dead, he's dead and that is GOOD.

I may be wrong about your interpretation of Arne Ruth's opening statement which is explained further on both in the context of that article and situated in the larger context of Mr. Ruth's general thought/ other writings what are to be taken as for granted as being in synch with his consistent position with regard to both Holocaust Gold and anti-Semitism.

My understanding ought to be correct, but I may be wrong, and my understanding is this, if I may paraphrase the statement you quoted:

Baruch Hashem and Thank GOD that the fall of the evil Mister Hitler did away with the anti-Semitic Nazi press and that this was replaced by a new media and new press laws. Now, whereas the anti-Semitic press is largely obliterated, the press which was pro-resistance in countries that Nazi Germany had occupied still survives. Bravo!

If you chose to identify and equate the anti-Semitic Nazi press with the THIRD REICH which was defeated, my conclusion is that you have identified it correctly and qualify for the category of "Mens sana in corpore sano" - but if you go on whining that the Nazi press is no longer in control of Post-Holocaust Germany and you want to celebrate the wickedness of that Nazi press then there is certainly something seriously wrong with you having such an inhuman view of history and contemporary reality.

http://www.helium.com/items/221803-the-role-of-propaganda-in-nazi-germany

As for Johnny Tango's simplistic truism…. Yes the victor also has his version of history … and then there are and have been anti-Semitic revisionists like Robert Faurrison who took to his heels as he was ignominiously chased out town by our reception committee, as he approached "the Local" where he was hell-bent on giving his lecture here in Stockholm…..

It's NO to that sort of " freedom " of speech……..and hets mot folkgrupp

There is yet hope that Johnny T will endorse this part of his own statement with some heartfelt jubilation: and celebration : that "the Nazis did not prevail…" in which case his heart is whole and hopefully his body full of light….

The story has now taken off like a wild-fire in Arab newspapers....

The sophisticated, civilized Swedes made up a vicious Antisemtic slander, printed it, and it was only a matter of time for the Arab/Muslim world to pick it up and start running with it like a bunch of madmen. The truth is there's just one difference between the Der Sturmer and Aftonbladet - unlike the scoundrels from Aftonbladet, the publishers of the Der Sturmer did believe in the garbage they produced.
