I think it would be a good idea as long as any classes base their content on fact and not the normal false statements perpetuating ' världsklass' standards that don't exist. Anyone that goes to another country should understand how and what goes on if they are to integrate into society.

One thing that always bothers me though is Nyamko Sabuni who does very little tangible activity for integration bar stand as the token black person for a government that cares very little for the inequality of non whites. She really sells blacks down the river for her pot of gold.

In my country, foreigners are free to do what they want about language and culture, only Western hegemonic authorities imagine anything to push foreigners this or that. Re-Horakhty: I doubt that this weird hypothesis is meant seriously, since only a hundred years ago and sooner European birth rate was much higher than now. No biological reasons, only behavioral. Rate of children per woman is a bit tricky information, because it has to be extrapolated or estimated - otherwise you could count in only women after reaching let say 50 years of age. I agree that this rate or birth rate is lower than in past, but this more or less compensates the longer average age, which means also a longer productive age. Re-Horakhty, you bring up some good points. I am willing to bet since these are official stats they include immigrants in the birthrate averages. This skews the numbers. If adjusted for "native" people of the countries you list the birth rates would probably be much lower.

I would like to add when I said good points I was referring to the situation in Japan. All Western benefit systems are set up for current taxpayers to fund those currently in need. Basically you pay now assuming that future generations will pay for you. That being said countries with below replacement birthrates need immigration for their government services to continue running smoothly. This does not mean they need 3rd world immigrants who rely solely on the Western nation's welfare system. In my experience Chinese and Indian immigrants may come from impoverished beginnings but their culture of hard work with an emphasis on education has made them very successful. First of all it is not important what is the color (i.e. reflectivity) in visible spectrum, but in the infrared one. Second, the role of melanin is mainly to protect from dangerous UV rays, not to influence heat absorption. And in the end the most important in cold conditions will be the loss of heat, the source of heat is mainly the body chemistry and not the sun. And this is controlled mainly by the amount of fat under skin...

It is clear that if someone has been let into the country, and NOT as a working migrant, that they MUST adapt to this country. You flee here and you must live here by our rules and values. Otherwise a refugee could have fled to a number of peaceful countries closer to home.

Mike0017, Good points. Easier said than done though. How do you get people to have children? The financial incentives are there in the Western world, yet it is not working. Switching to a new system of government services would be close to impossible in any Western nation, but especially a high tax/high government service nation like Sweden. It would involve DRASTICALLY reducing the tax rate and government services to a level that could be supported by a dwindling population. That said people who are in the later stages of life now and count on government funds and services would have to be denied these services, which brings in an ethical dilemma. I agree that Sweden should screen its immigrants to make sure they adhere to Western and namely Swedish values, but expanding government services is ALWAYS much easier than retracting them. Unfortunately I dont have the answer as to what to do.

You were almost correct on some details but missed it. From history, archaeology, paleontology and anthropology, earth was one massive land before it split up, man originated from Africa and first ones were indeed black.

Waspy, why did europeans wear dark colours? That was the case for many centuries. Blacks do 'tan' you know, they get slightly darker under the sun and lighten up a bit when away from sunlight for a while. As at few centuries ago, the actual geographic spread of man was largely due to their skin tone and weather. Put white people in a very sunny place, two things will happen, they'll either start dying from skin cancer or mutate and darken (over a very long time). Wow, I guess all of you are not reading the same article. Why are the comments assuming the immigrants are black? It is possible to be from a country on the continent of Africa and not be black. Also, I'm pretty sure there where black people in Sweden before the recent boom in immigration and where are the immigrants from that are allegedly causing all these problems, Australia, Ireland, US, Iran, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Jamaica? Here is a valid question. Why does the title of the article use the term refugees while the content of the article uses the term immigrant? The terms have two different meanings and connotations.

Under international convention Sweden is a country which takes in Refugees......ie. people that escape persecution in their contry of origin. Most refugees end up here not through a choice of their own. As such refugees are not required to be socially orientated. Immigrants on the other hand choose to come here and any course that helps them understand their new surroundings is positive.....many countires now do it. The problem I have is that much of social orientation dished out by the authorities tries to project an ideological image of what the values of the country is. In the case of sweden.....liberal, tolerant, democratic etc......and the reality is often contrary to the ideological image they want to protray. As an example, I would,nt say swedish society is particularly tolerant of immigrants.

I really don't know why people are arguing here without knowing anything about the content of the courses. Of course if it was going to teach fascsim values of Mr Sarkozy, Gilbert who say "Wr should all believe in " X" and nothing else", then it was bad but according to my understanding of Swedish behviour, it's not going be so. If it's going to teach some sensitive Swedish things like queuing, being on time, lagom , how to greet, introducing laws...why not? If I'm going to live for one month or more in an area, I try to their learn what offends them to avoid misunderstandings. Isn't it natural?

It's an excellent idea for host countries to educate their immigrant population about the host's country's traditions, rules and structures.

It is especially crucial, for democratic countries to familiarize their new-comers with the basic understanding of democratic values emphasizing respect "for all people's worth and young people's freedom to make their own life choices". Familiarizing Immigrants to their new home country is both educational and a preventive measure capable of preventing incidents of abuse, that are often related to certain stressors and the culture from which the immigrant chose to leave behind, while its equips the new-comer with information which can be used to navigate and enjoy the new environment. Orienting Immigrants to their new culture is an excellent idea. It offers continued stability to the host country and the groundwork that new-comers to settle.
