"The ice dripped in the winter sun. It was the first day when the light had been intense enough to cause dripping in the sunlight. To hear it was an extraordinary wakeup call. "With Thursday's outing, Fuglesang - who was the first Swede in space in December 2006 - became the first astronaut outside the United States or Russia to participate in more than three spacewalks."
I'm not saying that the American and Russians are like totally prejudiced but it does seem that space walks are reserved for "home boys". It is great that it is a Swede who broke that barrier!
I am also astonished at how the media plays up the sports so much that kids, especially "lower class" kids, have as their hero's the sports players! These kids want to grow up to be big name sports players! They then ignore those areas of academics that could actually take them out of poverty and get them the respect and money they think sports will get them.
Here we have a Swedish person who could instead be seen as hero to the kids!
Soon SWEDEN will have the worlds FIRST "Spaceport" when Virgin Galactic will be launching tourists into Space from somewhere near Kiruna!
More info on Spaceport Sweden: http://www.ssc.se/?id=9500
But the reality is that the FIRST Spaceport is being built in America. Evidently the laws are more favorable there! When Virgin Galactic is allowed to fly outside the US, then Sweden is the first (outside the US!)
