Overwhelming support for Reinfeldt over Sahlin

60 percent of Swedes expressed faith in Fredrik Reinfeldt as prime minister in a new voter survey published by Sifo on Friday.

Only a third as many would prefer to see opposition Social Democrat party leader Mona Sahlin in the post, who can lay claim to just 20 percent of voter support.

19 percent of Swedes remained undecided as Sweden shortly enters a general election year.

The Sifo poll, carried out on behalf of public relations firm Westander, asked 1,000 Swedes the question: "Who do you have the greater confidence in as prime minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt or Mona Sahlin?"

Within his own Moderate Party, Reinfeldt enjoys almost 100 percent support, a luxury not afforded to Sahlin by members of the Social Democrats.

Sahlin achieved her highest level of in-party support in November 2007, when 73 percent of party members polled expressed confidence in their leader.

But her stock has fallen in the wake of the financial crisis, as a downward trend has become increasingly apparent. This year alone her support within the ranks of the Social Democrats has dipped from 61 percent in February to 55 percent in May and just 50 percent in August.

Sahlin succeeded former prime minster Göran Persson as head of the party in March 2007.

A born-and-bred Social Democrat, she joined its youth wing in her early teens and rose through the ranks to become the party's first woman secretary in 1992.

She has held several cabinet posts throughout her career, and has served as deputy prime minister.

Sahlin is however a controversial figure within the party and was not the first choice for the leadership, winning the nomination by default after several other heavyweights bowed out of the race.

To compare Sahlin and Reinfeldt is like comparing Woolworths to Saks Fifth Avenue. Reinfeldt is a pro and has a lot of class. The other one, well....low order if you ask me.

Yup..he's a breath of fresh air in a very 'stuffed-up' world!

Long may he run!

Having said that the electoral vote is for the parties and the party policies not individuals. If there are going to be opinion polls on individual politicians why not throw Carl Bildt and Margot Wallstrom into the mix just for interest's sake. Having done that let's then have a discussion as to why Sweden's most able politicians aren't actually leading the major parties.

Is it just me or does Reinfeldt look like the love-child of Thatcher and William Hague....or worse, the love-child of WIlliam Hague and Ian Duncan Smith?

Certainly the policies are looking more and more Thatcherite.....like that new one about spending billions to rid Sweden of people pulling sickies - nice little potential witchhunt, that one!

All this proves is that 60% of the people questioned in this survey are mad.

When's the next election so we can back towards the left just a little bit?

I don't understand how Reinfeldt is supposed to be so good anyway. I mean what has he actually done for ordinary people in Sweden? What has he done to reduce Sweden's horrendous youth unemployment rate which is perhaps the worst in the whole of Europe? The fact is that his neoliberal policies will take Sweden nowhere. He should be looking at Norway where the government has rejected much of the right-wing moves towards privatisation and a reduced welfare state and where, despite the economic crisis, unemployment has remained at the 3% level. Sweden needs a true government of the left, and I don't just mean one made up of sell-out social democrats, if it's going to make any progress towards getting its society and economy back on track.

From what I have read it seems that Carl Bildt tends to be biased and Margot Wallstrom thinks Reinfeldt is doing a great job.

She intends to leave keep a low profile in politics when she leaves the EU in the autumn.

Kinda sad cos she could motivate voters to 'move a wee bit more to the left.'

Not a great surprise. By choosing bottom-of-the-list Mona in a wrong-headed affirmative action process, the Social Democrats let themselves and the country down. There were lot of highly qualified candidates who were never allowed to put themselves forward for the job. Shame on the Social Democrat tribal elders...

@Stuart M

Heaven help us if your wish comes true. To even remotely wish neo-liberalism or low-rent Mona to be in charge of anything in Sweden would be disastrous. Didn't sixty years of social democratic policies prove that? Look at Sweden now. Reinfeldt is her savior. Defeat the left in 2010!

To be honest, I don't realy hate Reindfeldt, but: "...disastrous. Didn't sixty years of social democratic policies prove that?"... What are you talking about??? Sweden is one of the coolest countries in Europe and the world. So the Social Democrats can't be that bad. And "Defeat the left in 2010!"??? Ain't you being a bit fanatic? There are rights and rights, as well as lefts and lefts.
