The Swedish EU presidency is ready to talk to or confront Iran over its nuclear programme, characterizing as a “provocation” the appointment of a terror suspect as the country’s defense minister.

"If they are ready to engage with us, we're ready to cooperate with them," Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, whose country holds the EU presidency, said as he arrived for informal talks with his EU counterparts in Stockholm.

"But if they decide to go for confrontation, then confrontation will happen," he told reporters.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, speaking at a separate press conference, said Europe needed to remain united in its opposition to Iran's nuclear programme.

"I think it's very important for us to be gathered firmly in the EU's reaction towards Iran, not accepting nuclear ambitions," he said.

Iran insists its nuclear work is peaceful but Western countries allege that it wants atomic weapons.

The UN Security Council has already slapped three rounds of sanctions on the Islamic republic, and pressure is growing for more.

To make matters worse, Reinfeldt said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appointment of terror suspect Ahmad Vahidi as defense minister was a provocation.

"We feel a situation where we often come back to provocations. Of course, I saw that this assignment was done as one of these examples," he told reporters.

Vahidi is wanted by Interpol for a 1994 attack on a Jewish charity that killed 85 people and injured another 300.

Germany's European Affairs Minister Guenter Gloser said that European doesn't want to impose more sanctions, but added that "there must not be a nuclear arms race in the Middle East."

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner questioned the usefulness of pursuing negotiations on the nuclear dossier with Tehran indefinitely.

"We have been talking with Iran for three years. Absolutely nothing has been achieved and we continue to speak..." he said.

"What is productive is that the Iranian people have shown a determination to move towards a different form of democracy," the French minister added.

A defiant President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday Iran is ready for more sanctions over its nuclear programme and will not bow to pressure in meeting any deadline set by world powers.

However Tehran has also said that it was offering six major powers -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -- new proposals for the basis of fresh talks with them on its controversial nuclear drive.

However EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said he had not received any such proposals.

A diplomatic source said the EU foreign ministers had unanimously deplored the lack of a "substantive response" from Iran so far.

If the impasse persists "there could be talks about new measures will be talks about fresh measures on the margins of the United Nations general assembly," in September in New York, another diplomat said.

However Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini appeared cool at the prospect of more sanctions against Tehran.

Any fresh measures "must be effective, otherwise they won't be credible," he said.

"They must be adopted by the UN Security Council but we well know that Russia and China are reticent," he added.

"Provocation" means simply " Attack Iran".

politicans should set good examples to the youngs.Talk or fight are not pleasant words.
13:54 September 5, 2009 by Uncle
OR... provocation means electing a minister that was proven in a court of law of several countries as a murderer in charge of killing tens of prominent members of iranian diaspora, bombing in a middle of Buenos Aires and is hunted by Interpol already for years. Iranian govt does whatever it wants (sponsors terror, eliminates opposition abroad, allows raping of those who do not agree, hangs minorities) and blames everything on aggression against Iran.

About time that Europe wrote a REALLY REALLY angry letter to Iran. Hopefully, when Iran will have nuclear weapons, Europe will write another angry letter. Who knows?
14:12 September 5, 2009 by zircon
L.S. Iran is right, it's nuclear ambitions are for peaceful purposes. But so is mr Kouchner right, that this can't go on forever, holding indefinitely talks on the nuclear- thing with Iran.

Germany too is making a real point, that no arms race should be in the Middle East. But what does that, the latter, really mean, is not being said. Since Israel would come up with the only one being really in danger, even when abstract and in years to come, of Iran.

I might be wrong, but knowing myself I don't think so.
15:56 September 5, 2009 by mobings
Palestine or Lebanon lacks weapons which can pose a little deterrence towards aggressors, and EU is just a spectator like rest of whole world for ongoing aggression by PEACE-LOVING Israel towards civilian. If Iran stops it, WHO will guarantee her protection by PEACE-LOVING Israel. If we are really serious to stop arm race then lets start with the those, who had it right from the beginning. But we know it, it wont happen.
17:42 September 5, 2009 by eZee.se
Yes. lets get tough with them, this time write a letter and ask for confirmation of receipt - that will show them they cant keep delaying for years, and cant flaunt international consent against their weapons programs.

there are some countries in the world which have nuclear weapon, why shouldnt they have?.israel got it for many years and is threatening the whole middle east for 60 years.i think iran must build the bombs to balance the power in the region. every one or no one.and i dont think this matter has got to do anything to any country.if they can afford,so they can do what ever they want.if they attack to any one,so any one can attack them.

if you got money you can have most of the things in life.they have got the money and i think they v got many bombs right now.you can buy any thing now a days.even if you dont make them your self.

if they want to make, they will make it .they think this will bring them more security, which they are right. its all about israeal again!

the main problem is invaded palestinian land.if palestinians get their lands and compensations back,i dont think anyone would think about atomoc bombs.

why eu is going ahead on sided?eu is just supporting israel so eu wont get any where as it hasnt for many years.eu must act as nutral so it will get some result.

iran says its nuclear plants are for energy making .does iaea monitor israeli or pakistani nuclear plants?who has got the bomb now?eu has laft the countries who have bomb in one side and is trying to prevent another country to make bomb. who ever is friend with america can have it and who ever isnt cant??where is logic in this. the thing is this eu cant do any things, because eu is lobying for america as the zionist is doing the same.

nuclear for every one or for no one.

thats the end of it

Way to go Iran !!!

Hope every country rich/poor gets a nuclear bomb so that they need not spend millions on conventional weapons from few weapon co orporations

Does sanctions mean the rest of the world can't trade with Iran outside EU's wisened perview?
21:06 September 5, 2009 by Tony Ryals
Yes it would be a good idea if your 'ally' Israel set the example for Iran to be a good world citizen and opened its nuclear program to worl and Swedish inspection, wouldn't it ? Ha:

This aricule is about IRAN, not Israel. Will the Anti Israeli's please leave these discussions. You just bring your racist, unballanced views into these forums. Write about Israel when the article speaks of Israel.

@ benraph... discussion can't reach to a logical end without discussing Israel in this context. Though article does not mention the country Israel but how about if the patient simply demands his psychiatrist to suggest medicine without knowing his(patient) history...

@Benraph,

Hey! Dont stop the nutters, its very amusing to see the twisted notions and myths mixed with a large amount of hatred some have of Israel.

I guess looking back at history and the way little Israel kicked 4 of its neighbouring (and bigger) countries asses still sting a lot of folk, hell, I would be ashamed too if I supported or had any family from those neighboring countries.

Full disclosure: I'm not a jew, nor an Israelite and do believe the holocaust happened but dont belive the Israel army is organ harvesting.

If you trust Iran with nuclear weapons then I have some beachfront property in Pyongyang to sell you.

The difference between a nuclear Israel and a nuclear Iran, for those unaware:

1. Israel has never threatened to destroy any country with its nukes, it just wants its neighbors to leave them alone and stop attacking it. Iran, in contrast, has called to wipe Israel off the map, many times.

2. Israel's nuclear powers are for deterrence only. Without this deterrent, it would've been gone by now (not that some people here would mind). The reason Saddam Hussein did not fire chemical missiles on Israel in 1991, was because he knew Israel had nukes. That is one example where this deterrent worked.

3. Israel gets aid from the West, views itself as part of the West, and wants the West to recognize it as such. Israel has a pragmatic leadership, elected by the people who clearly don't want to die in some crazy war. Thus attacking another country with nukes with no reason, would be suicidal for Israel - not only would Israel be attacked militarily by its neighbors, it would also be completely isolated diplomatically. Iran, in contrast, is ruled by a religious fanatic leadership that glorifies death and martyrdom, for the sake of a holy Jihad. They surely wouldn't mind losing half their population in an all-out war in the Middle East.

4. Iran having nukes would not create "balance to Israel", it would create an umbrella where Hizbullah, Hamas and other terror organizations would be more free to operate. This is not "balance", this is one big mess.

5. Secretly, many Arab leaders admit they are much more concerned from a nuclear Iran than a nuclear Israel.

And so should Europe.

Here's your Israeli 'security' experts(or stock securities fraudsters because they, besides buying Huntleigh airport rent-a-cops with money from stock fraud against Americans also laundered money for themselves offshore, who 'protected',

(unsuccessfully),Logan Airport Boston on 9/11/01.Menachem Atzmon as apparently any of you Israelites here know had been convicted previously in Israel of laundering money between the Israel government and Ehud Olmert's and Benjamin Netanyahu 's Likud Party.Yet still the U.S. government allowed them in the U.S. to incorporate on now VP Joe Biden's state of Delaware and Judge Alvin Hellerstein ,who appears to be related to Ran Hellerstein of Elbit Systems that Norway recently divested from,hs covered this up as New York 'judge' for EIGHT YEARS now !

Do you think Israel should break international nuclear laws and have nuclear arms and be the only nation on earth that does not sign any agreements particularly when they were greatly responsible for 9/11 by allowing Mohamed Atta et.al. to board those planes on 9/11 in the first place! And why has NY Zionist judge Hellerstein related to Israeli military industrial complex covered up ? Thousands died and jumped to their deaths and I will accept and incompetence theory rather than conspiracy theory but that then means Israeli military is too incompetent to be illegally harboring those nukes !

And some of our American leaders need to be scrutinized as well. Can you read U.S.SEC filings ?

And some of the 'believers' are just as bad if that's possible.Since I wrote this about Chabad Lubavitch with link below there was the Mumbai massacre that

ended in death of members of Chabad Lubavitch but also of the head of Indian anti-terrorism squad who was still investigating possible right wing Hindues for setting up Moslems as patsies in terrorist bombings.American Christian fundamentalists who may have been CIA also involved because their company Campbell White had it Yahoo account used to call media five minutes before Bangalore bombing killed 50 Indians in summer 2008.I wrote much about that last year before Mumbai attacks. One of the Arizona Christians had a Jewish Ashkinaze name(Jonathan Heimberg) at a company called Campbell White. If you google my name with 'campbell white' you'll find it.

Anyway I can't remember if I mentioned in article below but Agriprocessors in

Iowa besides having Guatemala wage slaves also had 'mad cow' that can only be gotten by feeding brain and spinal cord to animals - i.e.-very 'un-kosher'.And

they had illegal rabbis from Israel and East Europe in Iowa and the DEA showed up due to suspicion the rabbis were making methamphetamine !

Senator Carl Levin of Michigan who gets money from Israeli criminals loves em.Actually for all Chabad Lubavitch's clout and location in countries around the world including Sweden it is even a cult in Orthodox judaism and believes its founder is 'the' messiah' a la jesus!

A jewish group called thefailedmessiah.com does some of the best exposes on them.

Just take a moment to think about current world affairs,

Is it the Israelites bombing buildings and trying to take over entire countries and force their views and beliefs on that population? or someone else (clue...it aint the Mexicians).

Israel has had 'the bomb' for nearly 50 years, but had never used it... how long before Iran uses it if it gets it?

And for the morons here(you know who you are)

I don't see a real problem of Iran having weapons of mass destruction unlike the ones found in Iraq ;-)

Everytime I see that imature man talk about wiping out evil, and everytime I see his supporters talk of wiping out the 'evil people' like they are going to wipe their butt. I am starting to count a year less to world annhilation.

But now seeing that people who grew up watching Rambo in Afganistan and Rambo in Vietnam cannot think very different either I get really worried. Perhaps it is a belief that what emates from the enlightened part of the world is more logical than from the more barbarious part, wisdom that resulted in vietnam, korea, ossama, saddam, pinnochet, taliban ........ though the list doesn't stop .... I hope this time there are right.

Perhaps Iran is a reserve if Iraq is not enough to bring us out of recersion, if it is kept warm enough probably it can be eaten next year.

Don't get me started on the scumbucket Jimbo Wales and his Wikpedia propaganda that lies about everyone being able to edit.Just do a 'James Dale Davidson' google search that will take you to his Wikipedia link then go back to my earliest addition to his 'bio' that was a 'stub' before I started then returned to a 'stub' because they couldn't take the truth.

Wales even had a Rupert Murdoch Fox News' prostitute scandal

and he was part of Chicago Mercantile like Zionazi Rahm Emanuel whose father's bio was censored because it exposed his father's Zionist Nazi connections to Hitler regime and Jewish wignuts of WW II.

Also although few take the time to notice,Wales Wikpedia has many 'vanity' bios for his chosen right wingnut pals and they also have many 'public' companies highlighted on the site that have been involved in dubious stock manipulation and frauds. Also they have promoted a fraudulent stock claim of far right criminals(a rumor started by James Dale Davidson himself to distract from his offshore money laundering ops with the Lord William Rees Mogg of the UK as well as Jewish, etc. criminals and even Frank Carlucci of CIA and Carlyle who is suspect in murder of Congo's Patrice Lumumba decades ago),called 'naked shorting' or 'naked short selling'.The term was made up and defined as stock share counterfeitting and AIPAC'S Michigan Senator Carl Levin and Arlen 'Magic Bullet' Specter even lied that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shares were 'naked shorted' ! Iasked howthey said 'naked short selling' in Hebrew and whether it was a problem on Israel's Tase stock market.Still no answer.

Jimbo Wales of Wikipedia is the scum of the earth and unfortunately anyone who does any good research for that site just lends credibility to its disinformation campaign.

And yes we would have been much better off to have had Mexicans guarding Logan Airport Boston and Dulles Aitport in Washington,D.C. than Israeli criminals and money launderers of ICTS International and Marvin Bush and the Al Sabahs of Kuwait's Securacom with their 'blood hate' for Saddam who had the only country in MidEast that allow women to walk safely without chadors or burkas and where Aramaic speaking Christians could go to church in safety anytime they wished.

And wile one here said the remaining Islamofascist countries in the area supported Israel - well yes - Dubai sent the $100,000 to $200,000 to Mohamed Attaat Jeb Bush pal Wally Hilliard's Huffman Aviation where he was training or partying prior to 9/11 and the Saudis gave money to their citizensinvolved in 9/11 through Jonathan Bush's Riggs Bank and of coursethe Al Sabah's 'guarded' Dulles ! Duh.

JAMES DALE DAVIDSON AND FRANK CARLUCCI BY THE WAY ARE HONORED

'GENTILES' IN ISRAEL.

Democracy, women's rights are non existant and far worse in Saudi the western ally ...

Here we go again guys!!............Nerves are being touched all over the shop here.

Given Iran,s position, surrounded by western forces and Israel......all who have the abilty of military force......and in the case of Israel, nuclear weapons in very close vicinity.........It would be well advised to get some nuclear weapons itself, and of course it is what they are doing. This talk of not conforming to the non-prolferation of nuclear weapons is so biased.......as many have said on this thread. Israel has nukes......and the west never has a go at them for this. Hypocracy is abound. With the now state of the USA being a superpower in fast decline.....the next few decades will see big changes in world power, and if Israel does not take action to solve the Palestinian situation, things could get very ugly.

@voidplay

Maybe you're right, but I don't hear the same sabre rattling from Saudi Arabia that I hear from these viscious effeminate mullahs in Iran.

@kelvision

Thank you for proving my point. You just dotted the `i`.
14:22 September 7, 2009 by commenting
talking on confrontation, war with Iran is not easy. the reason is Israel's vulnerability either through Hizballa (which for sure will launch war in the interest of Iran immediately) or Iran itself by ballistic missiles (it's not 10 or 20 missiles coming at a time there will be 100 or more so stupids dont think that some toy patriots can handle them). and the fact that Israel is a small country increases its vulnerability. so eu, us guys should all together think and act about it if war is gonna happen. on the other hand if Iran becomes atomic then Middle East, Latin America and Central Asia goes much under control of Iran, not bending for west to show respect, since Iran always spreads its words.

But the reality is: in their culture and history Iranians have been almost always an influencing country, it's maybe the oldest country on earth never lost independence, they want bigger role in the world as their mentality has shaped around that basis. no Jihad, no enmity to Israel, not to anyone else, but they are showing very aggressive right now just because they think this policy will work. give you an example: when Khatami, previous president, announced stop on nuclear program, Bush put Iran in axis of evil list, that turned every single thing in the country to the interest of a hardliner called ahmadinejad, but the reality is that whole government is showing much aggression comparing to the Khatami moderate policies toward west, but west didn't help Khatami and now hard for people inside Iran to go back to that little democracy at Khatami times.

Still the white honky zio-nazis here continue in their lies about being 'semites' and still refuse to thank their founder adolf hitler and the white euro aristocratic rothschilds for

founding their fools 'paradise' or hell on earth as I see it.Should there be a law against fraudulently impersonating

a semite ?

And they are glad money launders and war criminals of Israel 'guarded' Logan Airport on 9/11 leading to the death of 3,000 in American and 1,000,000 in Iraq. They should go back to the U.S.penny stock promotion boards where they came from where they can promote more worthless corporate crimes and money laundering ops for Leumi bank that refuses to pay its own holocaust survivers. As for Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and Dubai and UAE,THEY ARE THE FAR RIGHT WINGNUTS OF ISRAEL AND U.S.GOVERNMENTS ALLIES PRECISELY BECAUSE THEY ARE FUNDIE

RELIGIOUS POLICE STATES.

But that begs the question of why Bildt and Sweden is supporting them and why the Sheik of Dubai who sent

over $100,000 to Mohamed Atta at Jeb Bush's pal Wally Hilliard's Huffman Aviation in Venice,Florida pre 9/11 was allowed to buy much or all the Swedish stock exchange and what is his cut whenever any Swede now buys shares in Swedish or other companies listed. And what is the connection between the Sheikh and the Zio-Nazis in stock fraud on the U.S. NASQAQ that he was also allowed to buy.You may be assured that had the Iranian government bought into those two exchanges the Zio-Nazis would never let you forget.
17:53 September 7, 2009 by voidplay
@Beynch

When you are not heard well enough you make lots of noises, The way EU and Sweden refused to attend a human rights conference simply because they felt Iran is represented strongly shows the kind of immaturity that exists in the west too.

And I believe that the Iranians can be just as mature when it comes to using nuclear weapons.

As an Indian I can assure you that we have over the years lost thousands every year due to terrorists backed/funded by USA directly or indirectly through other regimes. But the word terrorism seems to have a meaning to the world, to the media and shamefully even to the many Indians only when Americanlives are concerned.

What disturbs me is such double standards that is so blant is quite accepted. I don't blame the people in the western world or people like me under the western influence but I have stopped in believing the benign nature of western adventure which is often potrayed as benovolent in the mass media.

And I am convinced beyond doubt that if there a nuclear war soon it would probably not be from Iran or North Korea, but from a country that used it once more as a means of power projection than to end a war as it is often falsly claimed in the mass media.

Careful, Tony, when you talk about the Carlyle Group, because that is both AIPACs and the US Government's former and present Congresspeople's banker, or you will face the same prospects as Vince Foster, who committed "suicide" and was found not far from D.C. by a small lake, with a gun in his hand.

This same "suicide" event happens with regularity in both New Jersey and Sicily.

And the Sheikh's brother just loves big strong men I here.......

The United States of America (US or USA) has the world's largest economy. According to the CIA World Factbook, 2007 GDP is believed to be $13.84 trillion. US dominance has been eroded however by the creation of the European Union common market, which has an equivalent GDP of over $13 trillion, and by the rapid growth of the BRIC economies, in particular China, which is forecast to overtake the US in size within 30 years. This is a worrying 67% of GDP and equates to $79,000 for each American taxpayer, a number just over 117 million people. To add to the concern, American consumers are also increasingly dependent on debt and have been re-mortgaging payday advances their houses to higher loan amounts, and using the extra cash to fund high street purchases.
