Eritrean beats deportation threat in Swedish lottery win

A 28-year-old Eritrean national living illegally in Sweden collected a 1.2 million kronor ($167,000) lottery prize on national television Saturday morning.

Tesfaldet Tesloy came to Sweden six years ago to live with his brother who has lived in the country for 20 years. But in 2006, Tesloy received word that his application for a residence permit had been rejected and he was scheduled for deportation.

However, authorities have yet to succeed in sending Tesloy back to his native Eritrea.

He explained to Lasse Bengtsson, host of the TV4 morning news magazine programme Nyhetsmorgon lördag, that he feared he could be deported “at any time”.

But before Tesloy scraped the Triss scratch lottery tickets which would award him 10,000 kronor a month for the next ten years, he learned from Bengtsson that he need not worry about being sent back to Eritrea.

According to Alf Isaksson of the Stockholm police, who had been contacted by producers of the programme, “it’s very hard to send someone back to Eritrea.”

When asked whether or not the police might now try to act on Tesloy’s case following his appearance on television, Isaksson said he didn’t expect much to happen.

“There’s no one who cares about him, I’m convinced of that,” he said, according to a statement read by Bengtsson.

Tesloy, who is unable to work because he lacks proper documentation, said his winnings would help him “realize his dreams”.

Despite not having a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer), Tesloy said he had managed to obtain a bank account, and could therefore receive the money awarded to him by Sweden’s gaming monopoly Svenska Spel, which operates the Triss scratch game.

He told the Reuters news agency he plans to use his winnings to pursue a licence to practice physical therapy.

This guy is a kind of STUPID... Wants to stay in other's country after having that good amount and he doesn't have residence permit as well :P.

I have everything in Sweden, I have professional job, I will never stay here for a long time.. just gather some good experiences and some wealth.. will back to my own beautiful native country.. I don't feel nice to live in others country being second class citizen.
11:38 September 6, 2009 by usgepo
Maybe he can pay back some of that bidrag he and family has enjoyed over the years.

Psha, that is the kind of attitude, which makes you a second class citizen, nothing else if you act and behave like a first class citizen and contribute to the country which is hosting you, no one will give a rats ass where you come from!

Don´t worry Sweden would be better off for people with shitty attitudes to go back to their NICE and BEAUTIFUL countries! Especially the ones getting freebees abusing the system and not giving back a single Krona in return!
11:56 September 6, 2009 by Serendipitiz
Agree with usgepo... Psha, that attitude of yours deserves to be back in your beloved country. As an immigrant, I appreciate this country for what it has given me, and will always do my best to ensure I give back. If you don't learn the language, if you can't live by the rules and regulations of your adopted home, if you hate everything about it and just want to suck it dry and go home, you shouldn't be there. People like you will be second class citizens no matter where they live.
13:32 September 6, 2009 by askin
This was indeed a miracle. Tesloy must thank God for it.
13:50 September 6, 2009 by psha
you guys are saying these painful words to me because, I know, you are from those parts of world where you don't have democracy. Well... I am not from those countries. I am not here as a refugee or asylum like you guys. You have to understand that. Even when Swedish people go to other country( even mine) , they work there and go back from there after some time... So.. this is the way.. how people live..
14:19 September 6, 2009 by French viking
He should give the moneys to porr Swedish families
14:48 September 6, 2009 by usgepo
Psha.

First of all I did not come here seeking asylum, I was recruited from a democracy. Regardless that has nothing to do with it, all we pointed out was the attitude you and many others share, feeling feel like second class citizens, and the manner in which you expressed you distaste for being here gathering you wealth and going back to your beautiful country, furthermore Seredipitiz, hit the nail right on the head telling you that with that attitude you will be a second class citizen anywhere including where you come from, why did you not stay there, and make it? Why come here and feel like you do?

Honestly regardless if you come from a democracy or a dictatorship, at the end of the day a good attitude will get you far, a shitty attitude moves you back a few more notches in the evolutionary scale, and your initial comment reflected that loud and clear.

french viking, why should families involved in pornography get the money?? haha

"This was indeed a miracle. Tesloy must thank God for it."

Ya know, perhaps after "god" doles out winning lottery tickets he could take a few minutes out of he/she/its busy schedule and cure cancer in children or eliminate starvation!

Bah what am I saying, god is too busy helping some overpaid thug win another grammy or sport title!

You religious idiots make me laugh.
23:10 September 6, 2009 by kenny8076
Dazzler thank you for saying what i felt needed to be said!! funny i was watching The Day After Tomorrow last night and when all the world ending stuff was happening and the president asked the scientist what we should all do of coarse he replied "PRAY" wahahahaha well what did all the praying before the end of the world do? i couldn't help to laugh and slightly be mad at this religious praying propaganda!!

PS i believe in the Lord of the Rings :)

@Psha, I don't know what country you come from but you are soooo ashamed of it that you can't even say it, despite your claiming its beautiful.

Since it is that beautiful and you hate Sweden, WHY ON EARTH ARE YOU STILL IN SWEDEN? If you had visited then returned, I won't mind but staying put, working, enjoying the place, you must be kidding!!! Furthermore, you have NO friends in your native country, all your friends are here, are you sure you will leave?
00:18 September 7, 2009 by Yendor
In most countrys when you commit a crime you are punished. When you commit a crime in Sweden like being in the country illegally you are allowed to win the lottery and collect the cash! How can someone win a lottery in a country if they dont exist? So the Swedish lottery company cheated thousands of people who bought a lottery ticket out their winnings, one of them would have won the lottery and they would have been the REAL WINNER!
00:42 September 7, 2009 by jose_s
I don't understand why he get to keep the money. What are the rules or regulations making you qualified to win? Don't you need to be a legal resident? I know age is one of the rules, but it does not make sense that an illegal person be qualified to win. And how did he manage to have a bank account? I have nothing against him or his legal status but I think he should have to forfeit the ticket. He should be happy just to avoid deportation(legally of course).

Has anyone noticed the following passage:

-- According to Alf Isaksson of the Stockholm police, who had been contacted by producers of the programme, "it's very hard to send someone back to Eritrea." --

Judicial system in Swden is incredible. The country is just destroying itself.

Most other places have pretty strict visa rules where you have to have a means to support yourself and your family to obtain a visa or have your company sponsor you if you're a working ex-pat. If you're an illegal you have to 'jobba svart' without any chance of entering the pension programme or social security, or take part of the free health care system. If you've overstayed your visa, you'll be deported. Very easy.
10:20 September 7, 2009 by Jeanette
Good for him.

If Tesfaldet Tesloy is smart enough to be able to open a bank account in Sweden without a personal number, and lucky enough to win the lottery, then he'll go far.

It sounds like he's just the sort of plucky, initiative-taking characters that Sweden needs more of.
11:46 September 7, 2009 by hpunlimited
In the USA you need to be a legal resident if you are going to collect lottery winnings, why not in Sweden? If you are here illegally, you SHOULDN'T be able to benefit from Swedish society. I think it is a slap in the face to all LEGAL immigrants, why follow laws and regulations when you do not have to? it promotes criminal activity and sets a presidence for future illegal immigrants to come here and break the law.

Best would be if Freddie Reinfelt put his foot down and took all the money from this criminal. Give the money to people that FOLLOW the law instead, they should be rewarded imo.

Irrespective of why the little runt is able to win a SWEDISH national lottery in spite of being an adjudged illegal alien, and irrespective of why the authorities didn't just arrest him on the spot at the telly studio.........

..........if he's smart, he'll invest some of his cash in Lesbian Porn. It seems to be the new gold mine.

Failing that, tell him that the residency permit he so craves will cost him........hmm.......how does 1.2M:- sound?

Immirgrants like that give the rest of us bad press.
01:05 September 8, 2009 by La Figaro
Many of you have presented valid points. In the UK for instance, lotteries and things like that stipulate that you must be a resident, I was genuinely shocked that this guy was able to win the lottery despite being an illegal resident. I would have thought that the sensible thing to do is to collect the money from him declaring the money still avaliable. I think sweden is becoming too lax in certain things.
08:42 September 8, 2009 by Tutu
He should leave and move to a country that they dont over tax people like Sweden. Sweden should be begging him to stay if the country is really wise.
10:40 September 8, 2009 by lukini
I just registered to say this...

@ psha. Shame on you... expressing yourself like this doesnt give any good impression of you, hope your are the only one thinking like this (from your beautiful country or else)

@ usgepo. Good and possitive comment (Y)

@ hpunlimited. Yeah... big slap in the face. VERY weird rules

Im legally here and was very concerned what would happen if i win this while not being a SWEDE... Now i know :D

Where can I find the precise paragraph in Swedish immigration law that deals with individuals who have deliberately and knowingly violated the conditions of their temporary stay? Can someone please give me chapter and paragraph? Thank you.
01:49 September 9, 2009 by Guarauno
That´s not true that in the United States you need to be a legal alien to collect a lottery winning as long as you have a passport, the same happens to open a bank account, many often try to picture the US as a extremely strict immigration laws country but in practice it is not.
08:23 September 9, 2009 by white_man
"he plans to use his winnings to pursue a licence to practice physical therapy"

What kind of physical therapy? Giving massages to white women? This money will just get him into trouble.

Some of the swedes here just talk right out of their ass. I've never come accross one of these idiots on the streets. Same as everywhere, in the world of cyber space, cowards tend to yell through their monitors and never do the same in public.

Study history and see the reason why some folks are here. Some of you are raised with silver spoons and the only thing you can do is bicker and nag. Get over it and move on or be a man and approach a foreigner who has a bad day and tell him what's on your mind, otherwise shut up.
13:03 September 11, 2009 by nzroller
The situation in Eritrea from a human-rights perspective is pretty bad, the few forcibly sent back have most likely been put in prison and possibly tortured. You really think he deserves that sort of treatment?

Luckily, as Teketh points out (though I would replace "swedes" with "people" in your first sentence), the opinion of the majority of commenters does not reflect that of the majority of readers.

As for winning the lottery, all I can say is good for him, he's been dealt a hard blow by being denied residency, and is willing to invest his money.

The man who was shot dead on the undergound in London was illegal(from Brazil)He over stayed his visa and i dont think got picked up for it.Mind you he probably would have been given permisson to stay it depends.

Shared a house with an illegal from Jamaica and he ended up getting stabbed to death in the street in Bath. Its the local tourist attraction.

Before that he had been sent down charged with G.B.H OR A.B.H attacking some one in the street.Got 6 months in prison but then helped by legal aid to fight the order to deport him.

If put back on a plane straight from prison might still be alive who knows.

Both here illegally and both dead.

No problem with any one wanting to come here, study, work and live.If you have the right papers.Or if you get granted the right to stay.If not send them back!

If political then very different or if unsafe.
12:03 September 12, 2009 by Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
..Perhaps, we should be looking more towards electing a Right Wing goverment ,to sort out this kind of nonsence..?
19:22 September 12, 2009 by chinwe
All of u who are just saying "send them back", was dat how the Americans sent our forefathers back when they arrived there (America) with their cholera infected ship 50 something year ago. U foget so soon go and read ur history and find out how your forefather fled from hunger 50 something year ago. If u want elect the left wing, that will not stop migration unless you want to be an island of ur own, and i know that is imposible because a lot of u too are in other countries.
21:30 September 12, 2009 by Häggen
Send him back. The money that really does not belong to him as he living illegally in Sweden, should be put back into the system that has given him food and clothes, buy him a suitcase and plane ticket and goodbye.
03:19 October 14, 2009 by Marc the Texan
So he's still breaking the law. If Sweden is not a country of laws then what kind of country is it?
