Flying logs crush Swedish man's home - again

Erold Sigurdsson, 65-year-old man from northern Sweden, is once again counting his blessings and picking up the pieces after a truckload of timber slammed into his house on Thursday – for the third time.

By now, Sigurdsson is familiar with the loud rumbling and violent shaking that occurs when a load of timber flies off one of the many trucks that round the bend on route 363 in front of his house in Örträsk, just south of Lycksele in north central Sweden.

On Thursday, Sigurdsson happened to be in his attic as another timber truck came around the turn, prompting a recognizable sound.

“I realized what was happening when things started rumbling and the house started shaking. All the doors were blocked by the logs so I had to wait for help,” Sigurdsson told the local Västerbottens Kuriren newspaper.

“It’s happened three times before. The first time was in 1989 and the second time the house really took a licking was about five years ago.”

The driver of the truck was caught off guard by the sharp turn, causing much of the cargo to fly off the trailer and into Sigurdsson’s house.

“Erold could have been killed. I was out near the road myself about 10 minutes before the accident. The Roads Administration (Vägverket) needs to do something about that curve,” neighbour Svante Axelsson told the newspaper.

The wayward timber tore Sigurdsson’s front porch off his house, put a hole through his front door, and broke eight windows. In addition, his car was pushed up against a utility pole, crushing the vehicles roof.

But Sigurdsson didn’t let the mishap dampen his spirits, joking about what might have happened had been outside when the truck came round the bend.

“Yeah, I would have probably ended up under the timber, or I would have had to run really fast. But I’m not exactly like that guy Usain Bolt,” he told the TT news agency.

I think it is high time he packed out of that danger zone, there is nothing to rejoice about if this incidence has happened three times now. He better relocate otherwise his family will be organising for a funeral the next time if he is not lucky. Move out of there man.

I live in Northwestern Sweden and I've seen a truck lose almost all of it's logs. And it wasn't even on a turn. Not sure how they came off, but I think if they were required to strap them down there wouldn't be a problem. I just don't understand why they don't need to secure their load when it's logs.

For a country that has so many strict regulations relating to transport is is a little strange that the law is so lax in some areas. My car was nearly buried under half a ton of gravle when a truck in front of me, stopped suddenly spilling out its load because the tail gate was open

If this is the third time, then it's only happened twice before, not three times before as Sigurdsson is quoted as saying.

He most probably likes it happening - gets his house modernised and this time gets a new car as well!

One unlucky guy.... for the same type of accident to happen over and over....!

Hint hint to the local municipality: road hazard!... or the road officials should start doing checkpoints for cargo, load.. and safety!!

Sounds like he's keeping a log of these incidents.....
19:21 September 18, 2009 by Atlantan
Really. This isn't rocket science. A couple of warning signs and perhaps a rumble strip (something like a speed bump, but it just causes a noise) will solve the problem.

Poor guy is right, but dude take a hint and rebuild elsewhere!

I feel so sorry for Mr. Sigurdsson, but admire him for his cheerful attitude.(I doubt that I'd be able to joke about having my house damaged by logs for the third time!) Obviously there is some serious laxness concerning the safe transportation of logs, and I hope that something is done to rectify this very soon!

#2 & #3: Are you SERIOUS??? The truckers would be looking for non-driving jobs if they did that here. Insurance would not be available except at very high rates. But even with loads chained down as required here there was a house located on a curve that had been hit a couple of times when the entire truck left the road & hit the house. House no longer there. I wonder if his insurer refused to pay for rebuilding on that site? Does this guy still manage to get house insurance or do the truckers pay insurers pay?

Maybe throw a reduced speed-limit for the corner plus a couple of speed camers - one a couple of hundred metres before the corner and one on the beginning of the corner?

People don't respect the speed signs on face value. Enforcement is necessary and the companies involved have to punnish their drivers for "lumbering" them with fines all the time. (I had to get that pun in.)
