Sahlin slammed for partying in Majorca

Social Democrat party leader Mona Sahlin has been criticized for partying with celebrities in Majorca instead of staying at home to campaign in the run-up for the church elections on September 20th.

"It is remarkable that she is out of town just days before this election," said Ulf Bjereld, a political science professor and an active Christian Social Democrat, to the Expressen newspaper.

Expressen featured photos of Sahlin boarding a specially chartered plane bound for Majorca along with other Swedish celebrities. The purpose of the trip was to celebrate party planner Micael Bindefeld's 50th birthday at a luxury hotel in the village of Deia.

The church elections take place on Sunday and Sahlin, in her campaign literature, has acknowledged that the church elections are just as important as any other elections.

Sahlin's spokeperson, Anna Hellsén, stressed that the party leader has paid for the trip herself.

But union leaders, historically strong supporters of the Social Democrats, are still fuming.

"It is totally reprehensible of her to do this kind of trip now. We are living in an economic crisis and this is very bad timing," Harry Rantakyrkö, chairman of the Kiruna branch of the Gruvs mine workers union, told the newspaper.

The controversial trip isn't the first time Sahlin has come under fire for attending one of Bindefeld's parties.

Ten years ago, she was invited to a Greek island to celebrate the 40th birthday of the party organizer, a prominent figure on Stockholm's social scene.

"She should have avoided making this trip if she was criticized for a similar trip a decade ago when Bindefeld celebrated his 40th. It's quite stupid of her given this background," political scientist Olof Ruin told Expressen.

She's not blessed with intelligence but then again her party chooses its' leader so who is more stupid. Clearly she's a waste of space who needs to be punished severely enough to make her understand her responsibilities or to be replaced.

Don't criticize her! Don't you people know that this tax raising piece of …. is better than us. As a Party hack on the extreme left, this woman is simply more equal than you and me. She has been brought up to think so since her early days ungodly indoctrination in the Hägersten SSU. The story does not reveal who paid for her celebrity packed trip, but I'll bet my bottom dollar it was not her! And when she says she thinks that Church elections are important, the stench is overbearing. But let this thing have her fun. She will soon be decimated to a footnote in history.

This showcase of incompetence makes me want to seriously think about becoming a politician myself if I want things to get done.

Such a shame I should resign to my italian nationality.

I honestly hope Sweden gets on a good track somehow fast.

"Sahlin's spokeperson, Anna Hellsén, stressed that the party leader has paid for the trip herself."......... that makes it better knowing that she hasn't started wasting taxpayers money..(yet).......

Oh my gawd! She spent the weekend in Majorca! I bet she did it, just to rub our noses in it. How dare she!

Wow, these responses are hilarious. Ms. Sahlin isn't allowed to go to parties on her own dime? She's should be punished for having fun?

What a load of crock.

She may not be a great politician, but when people get upset at her for vacationing in the Mediterranean on the cusp of the church elections, it just makes me laugh.

How dare she! A holiday that she paid for herself, nonetheless! How dare she take a holiday.

If she ever gets into power, she'll be like Obama. She try to introduce universal health care in Sweden. Obama and Mona, eating their fancy biscuits. Who do they think they are?!?!
17:07 September 23, 2009 by rumcajs
And so f***g what??? To be honest I don't see the huge deal. If she had stayed in SE, the only difference would've been that nobody would criticize her now, that's it.

Just another example of Swedish envy. .

She was hardly quaffing champers on Burlesconi's gin palace - everyone even communists deserve a holiday.
