Immigrants to Sweden continue to flock to a few, high-immigrant concentration areas, new statistics show, prompting one politician to conclude the country's integration politics have failed.

According to a fresh report from Statistics Sweden (SCB), the number of inhabitants with foreign backgrounds has escalated in all of the country's most immigrant-dense areas over the past ten years.

Employment has increased to some extent in many city districts, and the number of individuals reliant upon government benefits has decreased to an equal degree.

By far the greatest change, however, relates to the concentration of inhabitants with a foreign background, which has increased dramatically in most of the 38 city districts.

"What the statistics show is that our migration and integration policies have totally failed," said Anders Lago, the Social Democratic mayor of Södertälje, to the TT news agency.

For 38 the districts deemed to have a high concentration of immigrants, from Malmö's Rosengård in the south to Hertsön in Luleå in the north, municipalities have signed special development agreements with the Swedish government.

The goal of the agreements is to improve coordination between the state and the various municipalities and to increase cooperation between administrative authorities and the private and non-profit sectors within each district.

In order to follow the development process, the government has also requested Statistics Sweden with tracking developments in all 38 districts.

The initial results of the agency's investigation, presented on Wednesday, paint a dismal picture of how well Sweden has succeeded in promoting a diverse society over the past ten years, with the concentration of foreign born increasing in most of the districts surveyed.

"In practice, more of these areas are functioning like huge refugee reception centres. They become a passage way for asylum seekers and refugees, which makes it clear that this is a very, very, serious problem for society," said Lago.

In Ronna, a district of Södertälje, south of Stockholm, for instance, the concentration of inhabitants with a foreign background has increased from 66 to 84 percent in ten years.

In Linköping's Skäggtorp neighbourhood in central Sweden, the concentration has increased from 22 to 49 percent.

In nine of the 38 districts, more than 80 percent of inhabitants have a foreign background. The most densely populated immigrant district was Hjällbo in Gothenburg, with a concentration of 90 percent.

Sweden's Minister for Integration, Nyamko Sabuni, however, refused to see the increased concentration of immigrants in city districts as an indication of the success or failure of Sweden's integration politics.

“The purpose of integration politics is not to spread people out. We don't see it as a problem that many individuals with a foreign background live in areas with a high concentration of immigrants. The problem is that many people with an immigrant background are unemployed. The purpose of integration politics is to support people so they can establish themselves in the job market,” she told the TT news agency

“The statistics show that employment is on the rise and the need for economic support is decreasing, which is encouraging.”

The agency's statistics also contained data on a number of positive developments, including a marked increase in the number of gainfully employed individuals in most city districts.

Both Andersberg in Halmstad and Hjällbo in Gothenburg witnessed a 19 percent increase between 1997 and 2007. In 2007, almost half the population of both districts was employed.

Similarly, during the same period, the number of working individuals in Rosengård rose from 19.9 to 34.2 percent, while employment figures for the entire country oscillated between 72 and 78 percent.

In most districts, the proportion of inhabitants receiving government benefits dropped by as much as six percent between 2004 and 2007.

Despite this reduction, in areas such as Rosengård almost 26 percent of the population retained some form of economic support in the year 2007.

The only way immigrants can successfully integrate is by actively seeking to blend in with the population of the country they have entered.

They have to let go of the 'baggage' they have brought with them and accept and feel comfortable with the norms and values of said country.

They have to get along with immigrants from other countries and bury any aggressions and feuds they may have inherited.

They have to learn to speak and even read and write the language of said country.

Well said mate. I'm realy happy that the gov. does somethig and that the something is in fact a very nesesary lot, but that's only the half; the other part is about people's attitude (immigrants and natives).

@Eurostan, I agree with you in a way. An immigrant with a family should only be given permanent residence after having held a permanent job for at least 5 years and thus be able to support that family without having to resort to handouts from the government. As long as the family is supported by a breadwinner and the offspring go to school and abide by the laws of the country the size of the family should not be an issue.

Bringing a limited amount of 3rd world members to said country should not either be an issue assuming that the government sets out clear and comprehensive rules and laws that these immigrants/asylum seekers have to follow. The result of not following these rules and laws should be immediate deportation.

If Australia can have Christmas Island then surely the EU can work together to come up with a similar plan.

...Refugee and immigration detention

From the late 1980s and early 1990s, boats carrying asylum seekers and mainly departing from Indonesia landed on the island. During 2001, a large number of mostly Middle Eastern persons landed with the intent to apply for asylum in Australia.

In 2001, Christmas Island was the site of the so-called "Tampa" controversy, in which the Australian government stopped a Norwegian ship, MV Tampa, from disembarking 438 rescued asylum seekers at Christmas Island. The ensuing standoff and the associated political reactions in Australia were a major issue in the 2001 Australian federal election.

Another boatload of asylum seekers was taken from Christmas Island to Papua New Guinea for processing, after it was claimed that many of the adult asylum seekers threw their children into the water, apparently in protest at being turned away. This was later proven to be false. Many of the refugees were subsequently accepted by New Zealand.

The former Howard Government later secured the passage of legislation through the Australian Parliament which excised Christmas Island from Australia's migration zone, meaning that asylum seekers arriving on Christmas Island could not automatically apply to the Australian government for refugee status. This allowed the Royal Australian Navy to relocate them to other countries (Papua New Guinea's Manus Island, and Nauru) as part of the so-called Pacific Solution. In 2007 the Department of Immigration finished construction of an "Immigration Detention Centre", containing approximately 800 beds. Originally estimated to cost $210 million, the final cost was over $400 million.[7]

In 2007, the Rudd Government announced plans to decommission the Manus Island and Nauru centres; processing would then occur on Christmas Island itself.[8]...

From what I've read, Canada's immigration policies have been far more successful than Sweden, but there are some obvious reasons for it - English or French language, 200+ year history of immigration, a willingness to encourage diversity, etc. We also seem wanting to encourage immigrants who have specific job skills or have money to invest in starting their own business than does Sweden. I also believe we take a less % of refugees. We still have problems as some groups are harder to integrate than others and we've managed to bring in some ethnic criminal elements, so our immigration policies have problems also.

A country like Sweden can't just suddenly over night become "multi-cultural" just because some politician in the immigration department says so. Why is that even desireable in Sweden when you previously had a fairly homogeneous society that worked quite well. There could be some very detrimental long term consequences to Swedish society. Sweden really needs to seriously rethink it's immigration policies instead of just plodding along under the "Swedish model" and pretending everything is perfect. I'd hate to see the day when the characteristic blonde haired blue eyed Swede becomes just another ethnic group within their own country.

To Greg in Canada from efm in the USA,

The immigration in Canada and USA is very different. Canada and the USA encourage and think that "diversity" is a good thing and will make the country richer. Canada and USA are also much, much bigger in size and wealth, and opportunities.

USA actually needs immigrants both in the lower class and in the higher prof. class and it has been shown, that in the USA the overall effects of immigrants has been positive. Some nativists will of course disagree. What is the USA without immigrants? Besides, the Indians, everybody one way or another came from immigrant roots. Not so in Sweden!

It is trying to be homegenous and keep the everybody happy, but in a way, perhaps also need some selected people to fill in the old boring pool.

Sweden needs to be honest, How much and what kind of immigrants does it need? Then, allow the selected people to

integrate and not treat them with hatred, and give them opportunity to work side by side with the locals. The locals also have a big role to play. How about being kind, coooperative and being fair!

19:54 September 23, 2009 by vladd777
Like the guy says..the immigrants/asylum seekers come with 'baggage'..religious beliefs, hatred of whites and western culture, whatever..

They will never be able to integrate because they don't really want to.

They won't allow their children to either and that's sad.

So..after a certain time..if they are still protesting..send them home.

We don't need them and we don't want them!

But at the end of the day there are those who genuinely want a good life here and hopefully they will find it.

From what I have read and been told about; the problem here in Sweden is the same as it is in the U.S., no regulation. I would also assume that some politicians are afraid to strictly enforce immigration laws for fear of the backlash from both the immigratory populace as well as the pro-immigration citizens. But who am I to talk, I'm an immigrant here too. However, I didn't sneak in, or make up any stories, I was honest and am trying my best to learn the language. (Although I wouldn't mind a bag of Doritos! lol)

I, hate racists and their ideology too. I would like to inform you that most immigrants doesn't want financial aid for long time. I see many business man who open super market and etc- for instance in Malmö near Rosengård you can see ABDOS SUPPER MARKET. Formerly he was immigrant but now he is rich. in Orebro I see Alibaba super market. I see vestrås many business places. Look Somali communities they are business creative if you want to realise that you can visit London UK, Minnesota in USA and Nairobi the capital city of Kenya how they are active and open minded in trade. But, the question is why Sweden don't want open small trade windows like UK and USA. this people particularly Somalis they need business competition and less taxation. They don't want 3500 Kr for food and 8 hours for SFI. And that is base of what they call integration.
22:35 September 23, 2009 by Tennin
@waspy

That video absolutely shocked me. Firemen and the ambulance crew are there to help them and save them. Attacking them doesn't make any sense. The people and children saying and doing such things infront of a camera none the less. If they hate Sweden, their laws and rules so much why do they choose to stay here? Sweden's a wonderful country.

I'm a young man from some country in middle east. Have been here for 3.5 years.

I have studied here to a masters degree in engineerning. have been working for almost 2 years as well in my field. it means I've been working as an engineer, paid my taxes, been a nice resident etc. I'm not a Muslim believer, but who cares? All Swede's care is that I'm middleeastern. that already classifies me in the "not interested in" group.

I hate to say Swede's are racist, but they generally don't like foreigners. I have not dated any Swedish girl so far, Cause they don't like where I'm coming from....

"where are you from", is a very strong filter for Swedish girls...

I can't make friends with my colleagues, cause they don't like immigrants, you never feel in your job that you belong there, or you are part of the company and are important and your opinion also matters, All you are given to do is

what just needs to be done by someone, cause all the design and analysis is already done by the Swedes. So you start to hate your job and your field...

So how the hell am I supposed to "actively seek integration" in this situation?? what should I do more?

my experience is, unless you are American, Brit, Australian or Scandinavian, you have very very little chance of being accepted in society.
22:54 September 23, 2009 by Hindustani786
Eurostan instead of criticizing people/religion/race, come up with proper ideas to tackle issues related to immigration.

Anyway one of the important reason behind Isolation of immigrant's or their ghettos problem is that Sweden has accepted a bundle of immigrants (Asylum seeker's) with an un-educated back ground.

A person can easily understand the way Asylum seeker's arrives here by paying huge amount to the Broker's.

I MUST SAY MOST ASYLUM SEEKER'S ARE NOT GENUINE. The one who arrived here either from well established families or the person who think Europe is a Heaven. those who really need asylum is out of scope and i bet they even don't know WHAT is Asylum stands for? HAHAHHAA.

THEY ARE STILL TRAPPED IN SO CALLED "WAR ON TERROR" ZONES.
23:21 September 23, 2009 by ropegun247
Listen to the racist comments here. No wonder why the statistics reflect what they do. Immigrants facing all this racism have no other choice but to bunch up in the few areas where they feel safe.

In sweden, people live under a facade of calmness with a latent racism that can only come out under the influence of alcohol.

The other day, I saw a white swedish woman telling a black guy at the recycling center to go home back to his own country because this was Europe. He informed her that he was european too, from Germany. But the woman kept yelling racist things at him. I just about see one of these at least once a week where I live....

Believe me, not even being American gets you into the swedish's good graces, you have to be white first. And even then sometimes being white doesn't get into their good graces as my british friend has told me. So it's just a general despise for foreigners. Muslims are easy targets because they are easily identified as different.

My theory is that the anti muslim sentiment can be largely attributed to the American propaganda that infiltrates the swedish psyche. Deep down inside every swede wants to be gringo!
00:06 September 24, 2009 by peropaco
Swedes being anti muslim has nothing to do with American propaganda. Most Swedes view foreigners with absolute contempt. Did you know that most white Swedes would not buy BMW's nor Mercedes because they say it is the preferred car for Turks?
00:32 September 24, 2009 by Antioche
I don't understand how swedish people can use that much of stereotypes even though they travel a lot in the world. You can't just put everyone in an entire nation or religion to a group, everyone do that more or less, but one should know that is wrong.

Like many said, "where are you from?" is an important filter for swedish people that doesn't apply if you are a professor or a asylum seeker, you are just the same. Maybe if people try to look for beauties of the other nations beside the negativities.

For the guys that made some negative comments on middle easterns(particularly in arabs) are the guys i noticed from the comments of Aftonbladet article. I assume that some of are jewish or/and israelian. It's funny how they seperate them from middle east, even though their holylands are in middle east, they came from the same origin from Arabs and they speak very familiar languages.Maybe thats why they have hard times to have good neighboor relationships with surrounding countries.I may say most of the fault is not on them but still.

By the way, i am from turkey and in turkey bmw and mercedes is also regarded not much classy because of the people with many but lacking class. It is also regarding the official car model for germany immigrants.I guess down here, all of people of 70 million regarded as same.

As in the integration, it is discouraging to see peoples look when they hear where you are from.I am a student and i don't particularly need to stay here but it should be hard for the ones to come here to built a life. Also, integration can't be happened in one generation, and these altitude will take the next generations even further apart.
00:45 September 24, 2009 by glamshek
To be Multicultural is perfectly nice. However it requires some heart which the Swedes have yet to get. I really feel they were very nice within themselves but the test comes when you are up against other cultures and your real test is when you are upp against the odds.

This is natural. And I hope they will learn it with the passage of time just as Americans learnt and implemented. However due to 9/11 even Americans lost track and I hope they get back on the same good bandwagen as soon as possible
01:15 September 24, 2009 by totyis
Ok, so migration and integration politics have failed. And do nothing about it! In a few decades the integration of Swedes, as a minority, will be even a bigger failure.
01:55 September 24, 2009 by svenskdod
OK, so the Swedish integration policies are a failure. Is that not what the public has been saying for years? It is saddening that people are forced to express what they really think under pseudonyms etc. for fear of violent repercussions. Most of what is said above is absolutely correct, but some people are either in denial or just absolutely stupid.

When I first came to this country I was given a book about Sweden. It was published in every common language and said that it was the Swedish peoples responsibility to change, not mine. This is the result of multi-culturalism for the sake of multi-culturalism.

IMO, during the early 70's the government analysis's looked at the way the population was going, and saw a problem. The population was getting old quickly because of not entering WW2. There was going to be many people retiring, and there were not as many babies being born. So they were going to need an influx of people from somewhere. They opened up the borders to let these refugees in and gave them large benefits so they wouldn't return home after the fighting stopped. They called this "multi-culturalism" and sold it to the public as being kind to lesser countries because Sweden is a utopia right now. They would easily hush the opposition by calling them "racists." The plan worked and people came in their droves. Unfortunately there was no thought as to what would happen when the population was stabilised. The annalists didn't plan that far ahead.

Now most Swedes are not happy with the situation and are beginning to see what the great multi-cultural plan has done to the fabric of Swedish society.

Sooner or later, the people of the cities who are most effected are going to form vigilante groups just to keep their children safe. The police are powerless to keep order, something the car-burners know. Once this happens, I don't know whether to support them, or join them...
02:17 September 24, 2009 by glamelixir
As an immigrant I must say a couple of things

EMF you stated Sweden needs to be honest, How much and what kind of immigrants does it need?

I totally agree with you and I am glad to see that someone ha the guts to say this in a hypocrite country like Sweden.

When are we going to start making a difference between the terms refugees and immigrants?

EUROSTAN I am really dissapointed by you. I am an immigrant and I prefer to have a practique for free in my field than recieving any kind of welfare. I was a succesful carreer woman in my country and I am better educated than most swedes and still can't find a job. Don't confuse things here, I don't want welfare I WANT A JOB.

Sweden is failing in integration, no doubt. Specially when it comes to well educated immigrants.

Sweden is failing in not having the guts to admit they can't handle to get in more refugees.

I agree with the person who stated welfare should be limited to a couple of years, and it is not the first time that I state that Sweden needs to stop giving passports as if they were welcome candy bars.

Then immigrants will be seen from a different perspective and hopefully discrimination and prejudice will decrease giving place to more work places.
05:21 September 24, 2009 by soultraveler3
glamelixir

Every word you said is 100% true.

If they would've been more cautious and let refugees trickle in instead of flood in Sweden would be much better off now.

But...the politicians, and some native swedes have this holier-than-thou attitude. They want to be percived by the world as being open and enlightend and the best country.

Like we've seen in the discussion boards here, there's the swedish way and the wrong way. Yeah, we joke about it, and roll our eyes, and for us love refugees, we giggle at our swedes and just go along with it. We say, it's just the way they are. Therein lies the problem.

The educated refugees and immigrants end up being in the same boat as the uneducated ones do. I went to university and worked in pharmacy for 10 years and I'm looking at at least a couple years of school to do the same thing here that I already know how to do.

There are some that take advantage of the system but there's also alot that don't want to be on welfare. I was talking with an iraqi guy from school the other day and he told me that he hated getting a check every month and thought it was embarrasing.

Below is what I hear from swedes all the time.

1)They didn't think it was going to be 1000s of refugees per year.

2)They feel that their taxes are paying for people who, for the most part, don't appreicate it.

3)They don't understand and get really angry when police and paramedics are attacked while trying to help people.

4)They feel like they're losing their identity as a country. By this they mean, not being allowed to sing their national anthem, not being able to say they're proud to be swedish and being accused of racism by having a swedish flag, etc.

Imo, #4 is their own fault. The EU takes the PC thing to the extreme. It seems like you're almost taught to feel ashemed of who you are. Like the welcome to sweden book says, we should be okay with whatever you want and if we're not we're bad.

You don't really see that as bad in other parts of the world. Countries in asia, africa, the middle east and the americas sing national songs, fly their flags, take pride in their tradition, and expect immigrants to do the same.

Of course, people need to be sensitive to others, but you can't degrade yourself at the same time. Do you think if you moved to an extremly religious or traditional country they'd say the same thing sweden does? I think not.

It's hard for BOTH sides to see the other's pov.

The HUGE numbers of refugees doesn't help anyone, native or immigrant.

It only leads to more segregation, more prejudice (on both sides), more violence, less understanding and less chances for true intregation.

Bottom line if there were less immigrants there would be more oppórtunities, there would be a different perspective and discrimination and prejudice would decrease among everyone.

The only thing to do that works the best is kill them with kindness. That's what I do. When I went to SFI class, the Iraqis didn't like me much because I came from America. When they said mean things to me, I just laughed it off and kill it with kindness. Eventually they all became nice to me.

I met a guy who is dating a friend's little sister, he's originally from Iran. But he's lived here for over 10 years now, and he's more Swedish than the Swedes. He's a really nice and fun guy, and intergrated himself into the Swedish culture. He's a guy that makes people not see him for his color or background, but for who he is on the inside. He showers everything with kindness and laughter.

Actually as I have read the posts that have been made on this story, I withdraw that call. I have been pleasantly surprised by the posts here. There are a lot of positive contributions from a lot of new posters including immigrants that have marginalised the blind hate messages from the usual suspects.

As I have said before on other similar threads, immigration has been handled badly by the government here, but we have a situation that we have to live with and try to improve, what the Social Democrats and their supporters want - to throw out all immigrants from certain ethnic/religious groups is never going to happen. Marginalising these people only perpetuates and strengthens the Us and Them attitudes on both sides, leading to acts of mindless violence by a minority of people. These acts are then singled out by the anti-immigrant lobby and applied to ALL immigrants. This does not help the situation at all.

Waspy asks the question "Have you seen the Swedes insulting the Chinese and Indians or is the hate directed primarily to people of Middle-Eastern and African descent? " my answer is YES. Although I am white, British and married to a native Swede, we have an adopted son from the Philippines. He is a Swedish citizen, has done his military service for Sweden, but still is targeted by the racists accused of being a "Muslim" even though his name is Kristian. After six years in Sweden he has a good job and many friends both native Swedes and immigrants.

Throw away remarks like that from peropaco like "Did you know that MOST white Swedes would not buy BMW's nor Mercedes because they say it is the preferred car for Turks?" is misleading and false. There may be SOME Swedes that think that way, but it is certainly not MOST Swedes. This kind of generalizing from the particular is the kind of statement that increases racial tension rather than improve matters.

The other side of the truth could be that EUROSTAN is neither an immigrant nor has the possiblity to have a permanent residenceship, merely an hourly-worker hired by some local companies. They love to identify themselves as consultants in some highTech companies, we see them in the office clung togehter all the time uttering english in strange tones, stinks of their strange food (exuding from their cloth/body)barely allows other passensgers to sit by their side in the bus/trums/metro, always eating the same dirty dish in the lunch, blatantly chauvinist...noding the heads all the time whenever/whatever you talk to them (weirdly confusing!!)...and probably the most worthless community the western world can have. The only thing you can have from them is their talkativeness, giving solutions to every problem of this mandane earth in the most convincing way. If you follow the comment/posting of Eurostan in some recently related "The Local" articles, you would find the validity of my judgement.

The problem is in only one word : MUSLIM! They don't want to integrate! Muslim immigrant are the most. Muslim immigrants are the thickest part of the problem of immigration. Sweden has always welcomed immigrants from all over Europe. But let's face it: the problems created by Muslim immigrants are much more numerous than those created by others. You take the view about women that have the Muslims: it is perhaps compatible with the West?

The real problem is the forcing of an immigrant culture to integrate with a Society which does not want them in the first place. Maybe the problem is not immigrants trying to immigrate, but the Aryan homogenous needing more directed acceptance of these folk from the 3rd world.

Drop these people who come from a cultural, tho materially poor, but rich in friendliness and hospitality even to strangers, into the land of cold hearted "Nordicland Über Alles" and yeah they're going to gravitate to their own cultural familiarity. But for the most part, differing immigrants seem to get along with each other. An example is the weekend Kviberg open air maket in Göteborg where various immigrants come together to celebrate a life that use to be normal before the big move here.

@chuks

Its difficult to say what he does but there could be several possibilities:

1. The so called consultants (low hourly paid non taxable jobs)- These kind of people are hired from the parent country and have very limited access to the swedish civic amenities/social benefits since they are denied of having a person number.

2. Why/How they come?: In a big company (mostly VOLVO/ERICSSON), when the local manager of a city/dept send a requisition for a cheap consultant to the Human Resource Dept (HRD)-the definite choice is to get to those paricular group of consultants hired from that particular country. The HIRING AGENT (belonging to that special country) convinces the HRD (they know how many ways to convince!) to get worthed (!!) manpower from theirs. In the end, when we receive them, all are worthless sheets (needs to be trained almost everyting!).

3. Could be students--I would be shocked if I know that an western educated gye could have such vision/mentality although such parochial mentality are not untypical even for the most western educated guy beloning to that community. We have witnessed all along...

1. Language stubborness

2. Lack of distant colonies

3. Geographical location to other (non nordic)populations

4. Small population of Sweden(relatively)

I dont know?? But I find Swede's surprised with appearance. I have Afro centric features which in France, UK, US, Brazil, Canada etc would never cause the children to stop and stare.

It can be a little discomforting.

But perhaps, its not immigrants alone that are the issue.

If you stand and stare because....boy oh boy..you have never seen such hair and skin colour on a person in real life

- (sic) what are the chances of that same person knocking on your door asking for work and you take him seriously.

I know, that some immigrants have disappointed Swedes...no question. But,sorry its Sweden thats selects them over other (perhaps) more "integratable" immigrants.

Problem is that ALL non "Svenssons" are then painted with the same brush BY SWEDES!!!

Hence nothing happens and the resentment and distrust persist and seemingly integration "fails".

Its a curious observation that the ONE (clearly non Svensson)minister got this "Integration" tag and subsequent failings...

now those ill informed will be thinking.."We told you so about letting in darkies..."

She has done no wrong. Its a tough job. But perhaps stereotypically if she was a musician would be the darling of Sweden and a model of integration perfection (sic).

Check out Aftonbladet today. There is a list of the salary and Bonuses paid to Swedish Bankers. 7 of the 13 had the cars they drove listed Guess what 4 out of 7 had BMW's 1 even had 2. All where white Swede's

Maybe you should call them and tell them they must be Turks in disguise!!

To pay taxes (hight taxes) to maintain people that don't want to learn swedish? To pay taxes (hight taxes) to mantain people the want to come in a public space/office/school completely covered?

@Schwoebel: of course i had it all wrong and sent burritos instead of doritos so here it is..from one immigrant to another 8)

http://www.frederiksamuel.com/blog/2008/10/doritos.html

Anyway..to finish off my 'argument..and i think some good points were made in this one in spite of the earlier sceptisism..oops dunno about that spelling..it's all this darned Sw-English ((

I think a great portion of the Swedish population has no clear idea of what is occurring in the country regarding asylum seekers.

I myself ( yes..I'm a 'plastic' swede ) have only really been 'enlightened' because of the articles in The Local.

I just re-read one of them and the situation is not good to say the least!

http://www.thelocal.se/20976/20090729/

What will eventually become of these boys and all the many others who are still to arrive?

It has taken me 23 yrs to integrate and I still feel as if I'm not really accepted and I look like a swede and think like a swede ( for the most part ) and I am born into the western culture.

Usually I'm an optimist but it's hard to remain optimistic when you know what you know.

Western culture is not and never will be 'muslim'...

Let's hope the powers that be will get real before it gets any worse!

Destruction and disillusion are the operative words..

efm wrote that immigration in the US has been proven to be a good thing. Not so. It is both a good and a bad thing. The good is the hardworking energy of many immigrants and the skills the highly educated portion contribute. The bad is that the uncontrolled US border has allowed in a flood of illegals, most of whom are uneducated and unskilled and place a huge burden on government services. It has also let a criminal element in and immigrant crime is a big problem.

US immigration policy has the effect of discouraging immigrants from countries/cultures that easily assimilate and are lenient to some resistant to assimilation. It's a;so true that American immigration policies often place barriers for the highly educated with needed skills, and are slanted towards the uneducated and unskilled.

By the way, the American Indians immigrated too, from Siberia. I'm not "nativist." I'm married to an immigrant. I'm all for a sane and controlled immigration policy.

My observations on visits to Sweden is that Swden's immigration related problems are even worse than ours.

I am confused.....All this Muslim this...Muslims that..is "Muslim integration" then, the yard stick of this integration topic???

I am sorry some here feel refugees come from countries they personally dont approve of. This kind of thinking fuels the very stigma that has come with the label "refugee"\ immigrant.

Does anyone out there find it funny of USA/Australia and New Zealand moaning about immigration?? .....ask the native Americans, Aboriginee people and Maoris about their yester year "refugees".

I believe many to Australia especially were social misfits like known criminals etc in some cases. Its clearly worked out there. And all these countries done well despite those historical and perhaps unfortunate injection into the pre existing populus.

Of course by the standards I am understanding from above a plane full of PHAT...yummy Brazilian honeys/hunks as refugees would stimulate very different feelings in every 'red blooded' man or woman out there. And I am with you on that score.

However, you are unlikely to get them sorts sadly. You more likely to get widows\ mothers of perhaps several young-uns accompanied by (perhaps) difficult traumatised men traumatised from war zones. Neither of these makes an easy job for integration.

Lucky Sweden has been doing ok in the relatively recent past history. Things are a lot more dynamic than you may think. Remember the Egyptian society (Ptolemy, Cleopatra days)??? They too were "living large" as perhaps some feel Sweden is today.

World dynamics has ensured that no one coutry has had it good FOREVER.There is a history lesson you cannot ignore somewhere in all this.

America is\was the undisputable power state of the world...in my life time to the somewhat quirky nation they are today...I am sorry Americans but...you have it good now other players are and have come into the frame while you sort out whatever is happening there with your health care?!? (or whatever) has reduced you to what you are. Its very sad whats happening there.

2 terms of the genious of George W cant have helped (but dont get me started on that one)

Darwinism to the max...evolve or die. Sadly its true here for Sweden and the rest of the world. This sillyness of holding onto to some imagery of what a nation's appearance should be, is the stuff of dinosaurs.Stupid!!

Who would have anticipated that the son of a Kenyan immigrant would sit in the world's biggest political office...its happened. Nations are built and destroyed. They rise and fall....refugee's can come from anywhere. Be nice to other people...you never know when you are entertaining an Angel.

What is it with The Local?

It seems so many stories here are intentionally touching on one of two very combustible topics - the Middle East, and Immigration. All for what? Promoting hate/racism? Getting readers at each others throats? Rating purposes perhaps? If TL became such a tabloid, at least give us enjoyable tabloid news... Instead of these incendiary Immigration articles I'd want more of those environmental dildo/ flammable army bras stories...

I have been living in Sweden for several years, and I have always been treated well by Swedes, who are usually curious to know about me - I am originally from South America but my background is European. At first, I thought that the main reason to why some foreigners were not being treated as they thought was appropriate was related to their immigration status (asylum seekers), as they often arrive in the country depending on social welfare, which can make some natives upset. However, I recently found out that a few of my friends who have South Asian backgrounds have several complaints about the way in which they are treated, even though they came to the country to work in very good positions. It saddens me to think that only white immigrants are welcomed to the country. I love all people and I wish that everyone was like me.

Any way you wish to argue it, the bottom line is that Sweden's immigration policies are simply not working. If stupidity was against the law in Sweden, the politicians that created these policies would be doing jail time.
01:37 September 26, 2009 by Brad_L
I came to Sweden as a student because I love this country. I enjoy Swedish culture, have Swedish friends, am blonde and blue-eyed, and am continuing my advanced education. People don't believe me when I say, in Swedish, that I don't understand them. I am indistinguishable from any Swedish guy, but I can tell already that I would never be integrated. For me, it has little to do with society or government policies. Yes, Swedish people are cold by nature, but I've found friendly ones even so.

It is something so simple as the housing system. I'll have to wait years in a queue before I can apply for a suitable apartment in a nice neighbourhood, to live up to my normal standard. No immigrant can compete with someone who will inherit an apartment in a neighbourhood where ownership never changes hands, or who will get into the queue as a teenager many years before they need to live on their own. It's disappointing, but I will simply leave. I know it's not the same for a refugee because I can choose Copenhagen, Paris, London, New York, etc. instead, but I would have chosen Stockholm if I could "get in".
04:10 September 26, 2009 by Bob Jacobson
Every new wave of immigrants in America -- and we have had many -- has had to live with these same arguments from nativists and racists wanting everyone to speak perfect English, demonstrate the same social customs, and basically be like they are. The immigrants' religions and ethnicities have been derided, their sexuality fetishized as a danger to "the women," and their habits compared with lower animals. When they have erupted in anger and, yes, thrown things at police, firemen, and other individuals they believe represent authority -- nothing to be condoned -- they have been reviled as thankless troublemakers.

Amazingly, within two or three generations, they are part of society. They still may wish to live in cultural enclaves or they may chose to live among others -- but they do so lawfully and their kids identify as Americans. Interestingly, all of the nationalities, ethnicities, and religions identified in prior posts are represented among these settled new citizens (most become citizens). Even the influx of Mexicans and other Latinos stirs concern mostly among the extreme right, on racist grounds. Business people find them to be solid workers and progressives like their contribution to community. Most of the bad stuff that occurs is a result of America's insane drug-war policies that corrupt everyone associated with the drug trade regardless of whether they are police or gang-bangers or poor compasinos.

Swedes are simply too impatient. They want instant solutions. You've been doing this for 20 years? 30 years? Try 100 years -- the time required for us to change our constitution to prohibit slavery. Try 250 years -- the time required for us to elect anything other than a white man as President. Then you can be impatient. But don't go backwards. There are plenty of examples of cultures that are too insecure to succeed with immigration policy or anything else that matters; these fail and are swept away. Sweden needn't be one of them. It's culture is resilient and adaptive, when it let's itself be.

Also -- and this is for sure -- global warming over the next decades and century will make Sweden the most popular destination for Europeans fleeing increasingly intolerable conditions in their own nations. What will Sweden do then? Mount an armed coast guard and defend against any newcomers? For how long? To the last man? And then?
09:50 September 26, 2009 by Tutu
Sweden is a racist country. Everything that happens in sweden is always looked at from stand point of race. Whenever anything happens the first thing we are interested in is what is his or her rac. Let look at the kind of immigrants UK and Sweden allow. UK mostly allow economic immigrants i.e people that have something to offer. Sweden on the other hand wants to fill her population and accept only political refugees. When people with careers come here (we sometimes train them), we turn them back and Norway takes them. That is why Norway and Denmark are better than us.
10:01 September 28, 2009 by svenskdod
Some people here think that it will just take time for the immigrants to assimilate into the Swedish way of life. There is quite a bit of evidence to the contrary.

1) The immigrants coming to this country now have an ideology so far removed from Swedish it is difficult for them to understand it (and vice versa).

2) The immigration authorities have told the immigrants that they can keep their identity and culture. They have been told that it is the native Swedes that have to change for them.

3) The Muslims coming here have been raised under Sharia law. They have been taught that this law has been laid down by Muhammad directly from their god. In this way Sharia is directly tied to their religion. Sharia ideals are radical and extremely illegal in Sweden.

Can people see how these factors are not racially motivated, but tied to racial motivation indirectly?

It is about ideology, not racism.

Sharia can not work in any western country, it is an absolute based on dark-age perceptions. One can compare it with burning witches. Are suspected witches still burnt today? This is a part of our past that we are embarrassed about, Muslims are proud to practise Sharia.

I am a naturalized American of mixed race. I came to America from a 3rd world country, as an immigrant with a post graduate degree. I then, studied in a US University to a doctoral level. I still have this strange "accent". I don't look the typical white American. But I believe I achieve the

"American dream". I am the head of a department and 10 white Americans answer to me. The other high level officers of the corporation treats me with respect and decorum. I drive a Japanese sport's car(350z)not BMW and live in a nice neighborhood. Tell me, just for curiosity, is this possible for an immigrant in Sweden?
03:52 October 22, 2009 by scandie
I am at a crucial point in my life- I am a Swedish-born immigrant living in America, and this year I decide whether I am going to return to Sweden to attend university and become a member of that society, or remain in America. I have decided Sweden, simply because I think as an ethnic Swede, and as a person with interest in giving back to a society, I can make the most difference there.

I know I am in a unique situation- one that can offer some unique perspective on the situation I will return to. I lived in Sweden during my middle school years, and found my peers there almost hilariously unaware of the outside world- they lived in their comfortable, homogeneous society and perceived America through MTV-type shows. When I returned to America, I would sit at a lunch table and sit with people from literally every single continent in the world. And I loved it. I loved the willingness to understand each other's perspectives and the open mindedness Swedish children simply didn't have the opportunity to develop.

However, even being an immigrant myself, and valuing the socialist values of Sweden (America has some serious issues with corruption and convoluted politics- look at our healthcare, our social security, our education- it's disgusting) - Sweden needs this reality check,

They already let in immigrants in without proper intention for integration and lack of awareness for the horrible strain it would put on the welfare system- so arguing about how Muslims suck and we should kick them out is like crying over spilt milk. The more you whine without discussing viable solutions, the more complicated things have to be for Swedish politicians, who end up doing as the Americans do, and only reporting what they think their voters will like.

A no-tolerance policy needs to be implemented in Sweden, when it's inhabitants are harming the society. A citizen who relies on welfare without contributing to the government and society who pays for him is not a Swedish citizen- he is an invalid. A citizen who harms other citizens because of Islamic religious convictions, and preforms murder, is not a citizen, but a terrorist- a criminal. A citizen who refuses to learn Swedish is not a Swede.

The muslim community needs to be educated and faced with reality. And Swedes need to stop hiding in their rooms, being sterotypically introverted while their teenagers become nazis. A new solution is needed, fast. And if we spend time worrying about who will like it and who will retaliate, we are simply giving our next generation the problem, while the nation crumbles around us. I know there are immigrants in Sweden who appreciate Swedish culture and want the opprtunity to contribute and unify the society- and if we run around screaming about Muslims and Jihad and Islam, we are pushing them back into their isolated communities.

Be willing to understand them before you condemn them- and work together.
