Mothers with high salaries breast feed their children longer than mothers with lower incomes, according to a new Swedish study.

“Our results suggest that those of us within maternal and paediatric health ought to give mothers from low-income groups more attention when it comes to questions about breast feeding,” said nurse and PhD student Thomas Wallby, to the Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT) newspaper.

Wallby and his colleagues followed roughly 12,000 children from Uppsala County in eastern Sweden for the study, which was carried out jointly by Uppsala University and the county's child health services.

Using information collected from the child health service, researchers looked for connections between nursing patterns and socioeconomic factors affecting the mothers.

After six months, three-fourths of the children were still being nursed.

However, smoking mothers breast-fed their children for significantly shorter periods of time, the study showed.

The study also revealed differences in breast feeding habits of women with different income levels.

“The higher the income, the greater the chance that the mother was still nursing after six months,” Wallby told the newspaper.

The study was published in the online edition of the paediatric journal Acta Paediatrica.

Organic milk is better.

It's possible high-income mothers could to a big extent equal higher educated mothers. They probably know to a higher extent the benefits of breastfeeding compared to fabricated replacements.

I guess that's also what the first commentator meant with it not requring a Ph.D. Student to figuring it out. ;)

@seekingtruth - I agree there is an obvious correlation but I guess it's too un-PC to point this out. The comment about smoking only reinforces the same point.

One bit of evidence that might refute this hypothesis is whether there is any correlation between income and length of maternity leave taken

I have a great idea! The Swedish government should tax rich moms higher than poor and give the money to poor moms so that they can make more milk.

Funny, when I first saw the photo, I thought it was another story about a Swedish dad. LOL!

From the resutls, it looks like there needs to be more education of expectant mothers.

Also mother's should not be smoking as they are smoking for there children to.

Bigger boobs - higher promotion.
23:06 September 28, 2009 by MTH
Bigger boobs means more milk for longer period of time. At the same time bigger boobs means bigger promotion and salary. Hence the correlation between longer breast feeding and higher income. Case solved!.

#4 I agree... if a mother's income is low then she might not be able to afford to take a lot of time off.

#9 and #10 - I think I know who the two big boobs are. You two losers.

Excellent! And I bet you didn't need to commission an expensive survey to come to that very sensible conclusion either. Keep up the good work.
